Aegis Fang are great guys. I met them many moons ago when they were just getting started as a professional(ish) rock band and hungry to build a following.
They offered to help in anyway they could and it happened to be 24 Hour Relay for The Kids season… so they became part of the Amalgamated Team Zone.
They have sent me some songs and demos over the years, a few making it on my old podcast Capital Rock City.
The style of Aegis Fang might be described as a grungey blues? sure.
I immediately gravitated to a few songs I am familiar with, “Ghetto Man” and “Foot Down.”
The record plays like a gritty chill. I have it on while doing my work. Not too many highs or lows. That might not translate to pop stardom or a track showing up in a crucial scene of Grey’s Anatomy, but allows the record to be more a working class soundtrack to the day’s chores.
A song I really enjoyed comes late on the disc, “Island Life.” Hey, I live on the Island too!
I’d say this is a hard record for me to review because I’ve met Nat and Mike and Colin many times in the past and they carry themselves like such rockstars. I can’t help but smile while enjoying their passion.
Take a second and hit their MySpace and have a listen if you like a gritty, Island-hazed style of Blues music.
Go with yourself.

I had my first listen of the finished product last weekend as well — I usually get to hear a lot of their rehearsals and of course every show but the great thing about these guys is how true to their playing they stay on and off the album: they’re just as great live, if not better! Island Life was a very pleasant surprise since it doesn’t make the cut for live rock shows, being a slower tune. I think it might be my new favorite. Thanks for writing about the album Jeremy!
thanks for checking out my blog Tegan
I am so excited to finally have this album! I don’t get to as many shows as I would like to, so having the album is amazing. I love “Island life” too, but I have to say “Small Town” is my favorite so far. I can’t wait to start hearing these guys on The ZONE!
thank you for the comment Nici.
I hard time hearing a mainstream radio “hit” on the record. That is not to take away from the quality and style. I could see AF becoming a Zone band of the month for sure…
But they’ll need a little more growth to break through on commercial rock radio I believe.
this makes me happy : ) Rock on boys Rock on! love you all!
thank you for finding my blog Lindsey.
My name’s Mike, I play in Aegis Fang. I really appreciate the time everyone and anyone puts into listening, critiquing, reviewing our band. Being a founder and member, I can tell you that it’s happening has been completely random and organic. We have taken the steps as much as they have taken us. Neither of us have much experience as far as the music “scene” goes but we have as much experience in our love of music as any other. The fact that Jeremy’s review on our debut album is an obviously honest one means a lot to me. The road we have set our feet on is one that all Three of us are very excited about. Thank you all so much for the support.
Mike, you’re a rockstar, thank you for sending me your record!
I’ve been a long time fan of the Fang, it was love at first hear, about two years ago playing a “shitty Cambie” gig with the Whiteboard Project in Nanaimo.
I road tripped from Nan to Vic just to get my copy, and I can’t say it wasn’t worth it!
This record is amazing…I used to play their demo CD every day, go to the Nanaimo shows, go to Vic, go to Van, just to see them. Under The Giant Spider captures what Mike, Nat and Tyler are all about – gritty, bluesy rock and mother fricken roll.
Although the sound is a slight departure from what their live shows encompass, this album has made me fall deeper in love with the Fang.
Amazing work, boys! I can’t wait to see you all again xox
wow Nikki, thank you so much for your thoughts on the record.
I’m so proud of you, Nathaniel (lol), and of course the rest of the guys. It’s great to see you doing what you love ~ and even better to see how good you are at it! Wish I could be there to see your shows but listening to the album will have to suffice for now.
Miss you :”)
