Beach Slang

I love when sometime in the past I order a record…forget about it, then it arrives!

Last night I came home after a long day of work to a package from Polyvinyl. They finally sent me Quiet Slang’s We Were Babies & We Were Dirtbags ep. The 7-inch has two Beach Slang songs broken down and then two covers.

James Alex talks about the project, “most of the time, I’m caught in a tug-of-war between the gutter and the light, fighting to figure out where I fall. Look, all the best stuff is part-cracked and part-patched. The best humans are made the same. And that’s all this is-a love letter to all my friends who thought they were meant to die young. See?-we made it.”

I love the two covers. The Replacements “Androgynous” and Big Star’s “Thirteen.”

the two Beach Slang songs are glorious as well. Piano, cello… amazing.

ugh… and it is so pretty.

And since I love Polyvinyl so darn much… I saw they have have a pre-order for a book called Anthology of Emo: Volume One by Washed Up Emo podcast host Tom Mullen.

The book has a bunch of his best interviews and stories including (and we’ll quote the press release now):

Includes interviews with

  • Dan Didier & Davey Von Bohlen (The Promise Ring / Maritime / Vermont)
  • Norman Brannon (Texas Is the Reason / New End Original / Shelter)
  • Chris Carrabba (Dashboard Confessional / Further Seems Forever / Twin Forks / Vacant Andys)
  • Mike Kinsella (American Football / Owen / Cap’n Jazz / Joan of Arc / Owls / The One Up Downstairs / Their/They’re/Their)
  • Chris Leo (The Van Pelt / The Lapse / Native Nod / Vague Angels)
  • Caithlin De Marrais, Kaia Fischer & William Kuehn (Rainer Maria)
  • Matt Pryor (The Get Up Kids / The New Amsterdams / The Terrible Twos / Radar State)
  • Eric Richter (Christie Front Drive / Antarctica / The 101 / Golden City)
  • Blair Shehan (Knapsack / The Jealous Sound / Racquet Club)
  • Chris Simpson (Mineral / The Gloria Record / Zookeeper / Mountain Time)

Real good man, real good. I needs it! Pre-Order it right here.

The Jealous Sound is fucking cool.

That’s all I got.

Now I’m done.

Go with yourself.

Beach Slang principle, James Alex, has a new project for us simply called Quiet Slang.

On October 14th, Quiet Slang will release a 4 song ep called  We Were Babies & We Were Dirtbags (pre order from Polyvinyl). The EP features two Beach Slang songs broken down with cello and piano and two covers. The covers are takes on The Replacements’ “Androgynous” and Big Star’s “Thirteen.”

Alex talks about Quiet Slang, “I suppose we’re all chasing something that resembles salvation, something that calms our bones. Maybe this is some small slice of that. Maybe it’s not. Maybe it’s chaos in soft clothes. Maybe it’s frightened. Maybe it’s fearless. Maybe it’s both. Or maybe it’s nothing. I don’t know, but I think about this: one day I’m going to be dust. And when my soul splits, maybe this will be the thing that sneaks me through the gates. If not, well, those are the breaks.”

“We’re allowed to be alone…..”

WE WERE BABIES & WE WERE DIRTBAGS Tracklisting:
  1. “Future Mixtape For The Art Kids”
  2. “Bad Art & Weirdo Ideas”
  3. “Androgynous” [The Replacements]
  4. “Thirteen” [Big Star]

Beach Slang doesn’t have any Vancouver shows in the short term, but maybe I’ll go see them in Seattle or Portland….maybe.

Go with yourself.
