jon and roy

Folksy Victoria due (power trio?) Jon & Roy have a new record out called The Road Ahead is Golden. The band sent over a music video for their feature song “Runner.”

The band says: It’s a song about running away from things you shouldn’t be running from. In doing so, you’re not being honest with yourself and those around you. To be specific – it’s about deadbeat dads.

That’s a sad tale…being a Dad, growing up with a good man as a father…I feel for those that were let down by someone who was supposed to be there for them. Maybe this a timely tune for some with “Father’s Day” coming up.

Jon & Roy have been putting out music for years and The Road Ahead is Golden is their 7th LP!

The music video has a Wes Anderson vibe, showing some bro running around a beautifully framed Victoria; while the band performs in the back of a pick-up truck slowing winding through the Vancouver Island country side. You don’t have to like folk to love the look of this music video.

Look for Jon & Roy this summer at the Tall Tree Music festival!

Panama

New Music super explosion again today so let’s get to it.

We’ll start with Australia’s Panama. His sophomore ep, Hope For Something, is out on June 23rd from Future Classic.

The press from blog hyper said, “This gem of a tune is ethereal and slow-burning, with a heartbreaking back story. It was written as a letter to a friend who took their life.”

I love Panama. He is an artist I routinely revisit and try to fit into my DJ sets. First listen of the new “Undertow,” I’m into it….. wait, was the name of that new Alvvays song also “undertow?”  ahhhhh ‘In Undertow.” Neat.

A band we know and love on the World Famous CFOX… Banners!

The British/Canadian (?) singer shared a new song today called “Someone To You.” It is a BIG sounding modern rock jammer that borrows a little from Mumford and Sons.

Michael Nelson says,  “When someone loves you, you feel like a rock star, like a hero. This song is about that, about wanting that and about making someone else feel that too.”

two feet

Harlem based Two Feet has a wave of energy behind today’s release, Momentum.

The ep features some light electonica and reverby guitar with a whisper like vocal.

It’s chill.

Happy Friday!

Noodle Tunes! Eating a bowl of pannang red curry and listening to beats during a rainy lunch break in the Terminal City. They jammed Australian producer Ukiyo and his single “Calling.” The song features the vocals of fellow Perthian, Your Girl Pho.

Crazy that it is pouiring rain today. It has been sunny and mid-to-high 20s all week!

Today they shared another listen off that album called “If You Need To Keep Time On Me.”

The band returns to the Pacific Northwest for a series of sold out shows in September.

Well how is this for some news? Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile are going on tour. But because this is just too awesome, no Vancouver date!  For shame.

I’ll have to plan ANOTHER roadtrip to Seattle or Portland in the fall (if the US hasn’t completely melted down by then and is still letting tourists visit).

10.20.17 – Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall – Portland, OR
10.21.17 – Moore Theatre – Seattle, WA
10.22.17 – The Showbox – Seattle, WA

Barnett talks about how she came about to working with Vile.

“In 2014 I scored a support slot opening for Kurt at the Abbotsford Convent [outside Melbourne]. We met briefly after the show but I was a bit nervous and didn’t wanna bother him, just grateful for the gig. Years later we started bumping into each other on the festival circuit all around the wide world and we became friends. He hit me up when he was coming to Melbourne next and said he thought we could work together.”

London producer Charles John sent me his “hybrid Trap” remix of French Montana‘s “Unforgettable.”

A remix will be a nice change up. I’d say this is the most requested song right now at Match!

A couple nice bangers for a sunny Tuesday in the Terminal City.

WAJU send over his remix of Serine‘s “JUMP.”

DJ Primitive reposted this on his soundcloud and I love it. Tom Bug‘s edit of St. Germain’s “So Flute.”

Bell X1

Irish indie rockers Bell X1 released their 7th album, ARMS, in Ireland last year.  Now the record is getting rolled out with a July 21st release date>

The album with recorded in Dublin then mixed by the great Peter Katis (The National, Jónsi) with Ross Dowling mixing the song “Out of Love.”

“The title ARMS is about the idea that, as the world feels like it’s becoming a harsher place (maybe there’s just more damn noise?),” says singer Paul Noonan. “We seek out the comfort of the familiar and familial…arms.”

Let’s have a listen to a couple songs. First I have a slow love song. Very pretty.

Now the more muscular, almost Peter Gabriel sounding, “Out of Love.”

And I want to end this blog post by sharing this alltime Bell X1 song and still a favourite a regularly revisit.

alvvays

The hype is strong. Toronto’s Alvvays announced their second album, Antisocialites, will come out on Polyvinyl on September 8th. The press release says,  Alvvays “dive back into the deep-end of reckless romance and altered dates. Ice cream truck jangle collides with prismatic noise pop while Molly Rankin’s wit is refracted through crystalline surf counterpoint.”

Alvvays is back with their style of modern romance and breakup. Molly Rankin sings, “You find a wave and try to hold on for as long as you can, you made a mistake you’d like to erase and I understand,” right off the hop of their first share track, “In Undertow.”

Sad songs (say so much)…you know the truth Sir Elton.

“This record is a fantasy breakup arc and my life nearly imitated art.” – Molly Rankin.

No shows in Vancouver? Brutal. Maybe a roadtrip is in order this fall?

strumbellas

Hey, we all mature at different rates. I finally got around to The Strumbellas “We Don’t Know” from their 2016 record Hope.

I guess sometimes you just hear certain songs at certain times in your life and you’re like, whoa.
