As my camping obsession continues to grow and await the final Canucks game (Game 4, Stanley Cup final… in Boston as the Nucks sweep)…. I’ve been wondering if there are any good camping songs or great outdoors anthems?
Yesterday I was dwelling on this very thought and trolling my Facebook when I saw a status from Christi Wizard: “A broken compass could mean spending the night.”
I thought, “isn’t that neat, the Wizard is into orienteering. huh, the things you learn about a person.”
Turns out its a Said the Whale song about hiking in the BC wilderness! Well… I think its a metaphor for other things… but if you take the song at face value, its totally about camping!
Said the Whale – “B.C. Orienteering”
STW’s nod to the beautiful British Columbia has me inspired to find other wonderous camping songs.
My ganger James Sutton over at the Peak in Vancouver posted this free MP3 download today. Kismet?
Elliot Brood – “Northern Air”

I think I better put down a collection of camping songs for my next playlist. Any thoughts about camping/hiking/lake/ocean songs? Leave a comment.

not really what i was thinking Andy, but happy you took the time to play along 🙂 haha
hrm, Welcome to the Jungle?
There aren’t so many songs I know about camping as there are ones that remind me of camping. That is to say, songs I have heard while camping and they bring me back to that time.
I hiked the Westcoast Trail pre-Mp3 days and it seems the only songs we could recall to sing at the time were Guns and Roses. I fondly recall whistling “Patience” as we broke the treeline and wandered out to an incredible vista of the Pacific. (To this day when I hear that song this image comes to mind)
I realize it’s semantics but camping is so much a social activity that I don’t as much associate camping=music as some music does remind me of camping.
One trip to SaltSpring generated a hilarious memory of my friend Ian absolutely CRUSHING Prince’s Purple Rain in an alcohol and sugar fuelled campfire sing-a-long. He still swears he doesn’t know the words but he nailed every note, lyric and screech in that song.
There is also a special place in my heart for Crystal Method – Vegas. It lived in my Jeep and I always seemed to play it when 4 Wheeling at night. We’d load up the Jeeps, drive into the mountains and find a lake to camp at. We’d sun, fish, hike, and have fun during the day, but at night after dinner we’d jump in the Jeep, crank this album and explore the gnarly trails we’d seen during the day. So. Much. Fun.
yay, there songs about camping and other that remind you of camping.
I am looking for songs about camping.
I could easily make an infinity mix of song that remind people of their best camping adventures! 🙂
Man, I have so many… if I opened up that Pandora’s box.
to me, camping music HAS to be canadiana. usually heavy on the tragically hip.
although, last year we went iron maiden camping and that was pretty boss too.
so i think as long as its music you love and it’s pounding loud, it’s acceptable for camping.
Too funny, you’re totally obsessed with camping!
totally!
For the record I went orienteering at Royal Roads once. It was fun, even though we lost (both in that we were last to come back, and also we got lost). Also, I can’t offer legit camping but cabining will definitely happen this summer!
