MML Zinc
Happy Monday friends…. back from a few days in Coquitlam to celebrate my brother’s 30th birthday.

A fun couple days off the internet and away from music.  Well, I listened to a lot of JRFM…my sister jives on the country.

Back to it today and I have more than a couple emails to pluck through.  One that stood out came from Victoria’s Man Made Lake.

Thursday night, I was in Coquitlam at Charles Best Secondary checking out their musical, Beauty and The Beast…but back on the Island, Jade was at Upstairs to unveil this summer’s Rock Of The Woods festival line-up.

Lots of amazing and local bands including, Man Made Lake.  I read an email that they’d be playing, and then got a message from them to check out their new ep, Zinc. 3 songs, all quality.

The Raison d’être from Zinc is the single “Horsefly.”

I’ll go back to word “quality” to describe these songs.  “Horsefly” is a well crafted song.  Great production.  Pleasant.  We all know A-sides win, but how about song two, “Water.”  For some reason, I keep gravitating back to it.

The song has rooted in my brain. I like it.

woodsmen
The boys and girl in Woodsmen released their ep on Earth Day. Its a 3 songer of indie alternative folky stuff.  They tag it as francophone?  Maybe there is some francais buried in the mix?

Northcote
Matt Goud aka Northcote, stopped by the Radio Factory for a live performance in front of his trip to Germany to take part in the Pirate Satellite Festival.  If you’re checking out this blog from parts beyond the Rain Forest Kingdom… we’re bullish on Northcote, we love him.

Folk Punk… or Punk Folk, so hot right now.

Aidan
Victoria indie musician Aidan Knight is trying to raise some funds for a new tour van.  To help reach his goal he has created a new ep called Telecommunicate and an exclusive poster.

The story is interesting, from his website Aidan talks about his inspiration.

Telecommunicate is a new 4 song EP based on the true story of Robin Van Helsum. Nicknamed “Forest Boy” by international media, Van Helsum was a troubled runaway who convinced the world that he lived alone in the woods for 5 years. Just as quickly as his hoax was uncovered, Robin fled the authorities again. The father of a young child, estranged from his ailing father, and working for a telecommunications company – Forest Boy’s story is as nuanced and compelling as it is mystifying.

The entire proceeds of this EP (written, performed and recorded in 7 days) are destined for a new tour vehicle for Aidan Knight and company. Hence, yknow, the van.
Pre-order Telecommunicate via Bandcamp.

The actual story is just as crazy.

Distraction Cover Web Resolution

Victoria band Leisure Suit sent me their latest single “Distraction.”  Oliver Brooks got in contact with me form the Czech Republic where I guess he is adventuring to say that “Distraction” is produced by Colin Stewart (Black Mountain, Dan Mangan, A.C. Newman) and mastered by Noah Mintz (Broken Social Scene, Stars).

References check out, we better hit play on this.

Very smokey.  Underhanded.  I like it.

heart of gold edit

Cover Songs long weekend on the Zone.  Happy Easter friends.

Dear Dear friend of the show, Vince Vaccaro wanted to be part of the action this weekend, so he was kind enough to dust off his harmonica and hit record on his tape deck to lay down one of his all-time personal favourites.

“Here you go man… I sat down all day and did this version of one of my fav songs… its Heart Of Gold by Neil Young.”  Thanks Vince!

sufjan

Last night, (now) local rockers Zerbin launched their new ep, Take Your Heart, at Lucky Bar.

Zerbin had a massive set.  These guys shine on the radio but they go super nova on stage.  Lucky Bar is not a big place, with a little cramped stage, but the guy bring what feels like a festival or arena show.

Encore time…. Zerbin does a beautiful a cappella “Human.” (orignally a song by The Killers.)  Then they dive into Sufjan Steven’s “Chicago.”

Sam Thom Photography captured it.

and the original…. because its amazing.

I can’t believe I’ve been sitting on this great cover of Awolnation’s “Sail” for so long.

Back in 2011… my man Josh at Veneto turned me on to Geoff Lundstrom.  He was doing a groovy thing down at Canoe on Thursdays (does he still?).  Lots of covers…and one standout is his take on “Sail.”

Fast-forward to today and I am organizing the cover songs we have on our playlist at the radio factory.  I get thinking some local bands with covers… Maurice’s “Robin,” Jon & Roy tackling Ledbelly, Acres of Lion’s jamming “Never Surrender”…. and “Sail.”

Zerbin

Zerbin is getting the local tag because the pleasant surprise of Rifflandia V has relocated from The City of Champions to the Garden City.

We know and love Zerbin from their radio single “New Earth.”  Since the success of that single, Zerbin has moved to the land of rain and brunch to record a new record.  While that gets wrapped, the group has an ep for us this Spring.  It is called Touch and features the song “Take Your Heart.”

A couple LIVE shows coming up featuring Zerbin.

Tuesday, March 26th at Lucky Bar, Victoria
Thursday, March 28th at Joe’s Apartment, Vancouver

Talking to Dylan at the radio factory this morning about how great Northcote is, the man pointed me in the direction of a new song on his soundcloud.  Wow…. lots of “whoaaaaaa” and a damn fine catchy chorus.

One of my most anticipated Victoria records of the year for sure.  Let’s go, whooooooaaaa!

Hey Canada!  Find a Northcote show near you and go to it.
