Text to 2-80-CFOX yesterday, a listener wanted us to have a listen to Vince Vaccaro.

Vaccaro is a singer-songwriter from Vancouver Island. I’ve personally known Vince for a bunch of years. His style tends to be rooted in guitar rock. But he filters that through a west coast, beach living vibe.

Over the years Vince Vaccaro has had a few songs reach the radio FM airwaves in Victoria and Vancouver. His new song is called “Siren.” A moody slow burn with jangly guitars and female backing vocals from Kaitlin Jasmine.

Recently Vince Vaccaro performed at the Legends Valley Music Festival and Rifflandia.

Victoria’s Vince Vaccaro posted this nice cover of Chris Isaak’s 1989 cut “Wicked Game.” He writes on his instagram, “I’ve always loved this song, and today I decided to sing the shit out of it.”

Let’s have a listen…and is Vince’s way, free download if you dig it.

heard it on the radio…a few sounds from the Zone @ 91-3 today.

Vancouver’s Head of the Herd came to Victoria today for a sold-out show at Lucky Bar.  I am home with a new baby so I am off the warpath for awhile…but luckily Head of the Herd came to me and performed their song “By This Time Tomorrow” on the show.

Mike Devlin over at the Times Colonist had a great interview with the band. Have a read.

Friday Night is a busy one in Victoria.  Local beauty Vince Vaccaro also had a show.  VV’s new record is called Koa and is a collection of ukulele songs.

Vince performed the song “Here in My Place” (and I really ought to post that live cut… but while sound checking I asked him to riff a bear story into a song.

What?  Mike Devlin ALSO interviewed VV.  Have a read right here.

Finally….listening to Dylan and Jason on The Morning Zone, they were talking about Steve Martin coming to Victoria and performing at The Royal Theatre, May 12th.

Jason is obsessed with the man. But how obsessed?  Dylan goes back to 2009…

Victoria’s Vince Vaccaro will release his ukulele record Koa next Tuesday, November 26th.

A very personal record, Vince dives into his own memories and life for the stories and themes that dominate the 10 tracks.   For the feature cut, “Here in My Place,” Vince worked with Victoria producer Dave Wallace for a video.  “Here in My Place” touches on many of the aspects of Vince Vaccaro’s life that people familiar with him will recognize.  You have VV at the beach, VV on stage, and VV in the shop.  You’ll watch this video and think, “oh man, Vancouver Island is really pretty….and Vince knows how to do wood work?”

on November 26th, Vince Vaccaro will be releasing his ukulele record Koa.

The Victoria, Vancouver Island performer is actually in the studio now recording a proper “plugged in record” but while we wait, he will sate our appetite for new music with a lovely record of soft and beautiful music.  The soundtrack to a nice day of decompression.

I texted VV to see what Koa means.  he said it is the (or a) type of wood to make ukuleles and might also mean warrior.

Yesterday Madelyn was sick… and so was Nana, and then Coral.  I stayed home to watch Maddy.  Since I had the time, I thought it would be nice to make some miso salad dressing. I am obsessed with the stuff.  I found a nice recipe on the New York Times of all places and made it last night.  easy enough (but expensive if you don’t keep all the Asian oils in your cupboard…. holy moly!).

In the end, it was delicious!  WOW!  But hey… how long will this Miso paste live in my fridge?

19recipehealth-1379086476425-articleLarge1 rounded tablespoon white or yellow miso

2 tablespoons seasoned rice vinegar, or 1 tablespoon rice vinegar and 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice

1/2 teaspoon grated fresh ginger

1 small garlic clove, minced or put through a press

Pinch of cayenne

2 tablespoons dark sesame oil

2 tablespoons peanut oil or grapeseed oil

2 tablespoons plain low-fat yogurt

1. Combine the miso and vinegar (or vinegar and lime juice) in a small bowl and whisk together. Add the remaining ingredients and whisk until amalgamated. You can also mix this in a blender.

2. Toss with the salad of your choice.

Yield: 2/3 cup

Advance preparation: This will keep for a week in the refrigerator.

Cover Songs long weekend on the Zone.  Happy Easter friends.

Dear Dear friend of the show, Vince Vaccaro wanted to be part of the action this weekend, so he was kind enough to dust off his harmonica and hit record on his tape deck to lay down one of his all-time personal favourites.

“Here you go man… I sat down all day and did this version of one of my fav songs… its Heart Of Gold by Neil Young.”  Thanks Vince!

An email from my homeboy Matt let me know that Rolla Olak will be opening for Vince Vaccaro on March 15th at Sugar Nightclub.

Zoners of a certain vintage year will remember a band of the month called Grace Nocturnal.  Then he joined Boy, a Canadian indie band of the mid-2000s.  They had a couple modern rock radio hits including this 2004 jam, “Up In This Town.”

These days, Rolla (who I believe is based out of Vancouver?) is doing a solo thing.  I’ve been listening to  his latest record Western Heart today and really feeling the song “Rainy Day.”  What a perfect sad, raining day song to dream about your crush to (or dwell on a love that went south?).

Vince Vaccaro is a warrior. The man has been creating and performing as long as I’ve been in Victoria…and his time began before that.

Recent adventures had Vince traveling and touring again in Australia.  His new record is called Byron Songs and features songs primarily written while hanging out at Byron Bay.  The songs were brought back to Canada and polished up in Victoria with the usual cast of Victoria music friends (who you’ll hear on a few of the songs, I read the names Adam Kittredge and Mike Edel).

The record also includes a favourites from the radio here in Victoria, “The Dove.”  Vince sent me a message to say the feature song will be “Let Me Go” so let’s punch that up.

“Let Me Go” isn’t a new new song, as its bounced around a bit here at the radio station (I think he pressed it as a 7-inch single to give as a promo for his Australia trip), but on Byron Songs, it is broken down a bit for an acoustic mix.

and if you’re new to Vince Vaccaro and liking what you’re hearing, let’s revisit “The Dove.” (he also has maybe close to a half dozen “hits” locally on the radio in Victoria…so he is worth your time time to explore.)

For Vince Vaccaro fans that want to get past “The Dove” and “Let Me Go,” you’ll find a collection of new, and re-interpreted songs streaming on Soundcloud.  Poke around and send Vince a comment, “like,” “heart,” or maybe even plunk down a couple bucks and buy the thing to help Vince take the next adventure!

Vince Vaccaro sent me an MP3 link to a Christmas jam he recorded.

Pour two fingers (ok, make it three) of spicy rum in a cocktail glass with a splash of eggnog and listen to this!
