BLU J share their first original of 2017. For the song “Safe,” they teamed up with Matthew Chaim. Apparently these guys have some sort of Vancouver connection? Their Facebook says San Fran/Vancouver….huh.

Amped today to get an email from Young Galaxy. The Montreal indie group shared the spacey-disco jam “Stay For Real.”
Young Galaxy talks about the urgency behind the song; “We can no longer stand idly by and rely only on the people who shape the world for us culturally and politically. We must stay true to ourselves and feel the courage of our convictions in the face of polarizing political and personal views. But most of all, we must show empathy, compassion and love – even when faced with increasing existential threats, and fear and hostility. This song is a statement of intent, as we enter a new era, to hopefully serve as a reminder to ourselves of what our responsibilities are as artists in this troubled time.”
Proceeds form the independent single will go to Plus One.
“We are proud to be able to partner with Plus One (www.plus1.org). Proceeds from the sale of the song will go to defending the rights of the marginalized through Pivot Legal Society (Canada), ACLU Nationwide (USA), and W.A.V.E (EU).”

Scott Stanton from the Vancouver Island band Current Swell stopped by CFOX in Vancouver to talk their new album, When To Talk and When To Listen. The album is out on May 12th on Nettwerk Records. Their 6th album comes off the heels of 2014’s most excellent Ulysses.
The band mostly in Nashville with Jacquire King. Scott talked about the vibes of Nashville and how that filtered into the record. He talked about writing collaboratively with Dave Lang. Scott also explained the genesis of the first single “It Ain’t Right.” I asked him about some other songs on the record we can look forward to. One song is the title track which he said has line like, “the woman is in the garden again.” That woman is their neighbour, who likes to garden. And he said we can get excited for side one, track one, “Marsha.”
Current Swell will have some shows and festivals going down this summer. Including a trip over to Europe and some US dates in May.

Fleet Foxes are back! On June 16th, the band will release Crack-Up on Nonesuch Records. Man, it’s been 6 years since Helplessness Blues. Nuts.
They shared a song today. Jesus, it’s almost 9 minutes! “Third of May / Ōdaigahara” is the name of the cut. If you’re familiar with Fleet Foxes sound, you’ll be able easily slide into this one.
The band also announced a tour, their first since 2011! (I still have the t-shirt from when I saw them in Vancouver). No Pacific Northwest dates…yet. Lame. For tour dates check out their website.

LA producer Gryffin teamed up with Daya for a song called “Feel Good.” The song has only been out four days and it’s already flirting with 200,000 spins on Soundcloud. Not bad.

Dallas Green is sharing two unreleased songs from his 2015 album If I should Go Before You. The songs are “Peaceful Road” and “Rain.” The press release says, “both tracks were cut in Nashville during recording sessions for his #1 album.”
The songs will be released a single that you can order as a vinyl record, or digitally from iTunes.

I have been loving Bonobo’s Migration record. One of the standouts his his joint with vocalist Rhye.
The two showed up on the Song Exploder podcast this week. A very cool episode that deep dives in to Simon Green’s creative process.
I love how the podcast pulls apart the layers of the songs and has Simon explain where the samples come from, or what inspired them. How he then manipulates them and then throws the whole project over to Rhye to get his spin on vocal performance. Rhye also shares the personal story behind the lyrics..Adds a lot of weight and context to the enjoyment to the song.
