medasin

It’s been awhile since I’ve featured the Dallas producer Medasin.

Post Malone is pretty hot right now, so why not send out a remix of his song “I Fall Apart.” Sometimes I hear these remixes and I prefer them to original. Post Malone has always traded on a dark pop and it isn’t like Medasin makes it a happy song, but he does infuse a little more energy into the song while still holding on to the dirgy future sounds.

I was thinking about Young Galaxy’s “Crying My Heart Out” today. I love this song so much.

Amped today to get an email from Young Galaxy. The Montreal indie group shared the spacey-disco jam “Stay For Real.”

Young Galaxy talks about the urgency behind the song; “We can no longer stand idly by and rely only on the people who shape the world for us culturally and politically. We must stay true to ourselves and feel the courage of our convictions in the face of polarizing political and personal views. But most of all, we must show empathy, compassion and love – even when faced with increasing existential threats, and fear and hostility. This song is a statement of intent, as we enter a new era, to hopefully serve as a reminder to ourselves of what our responsibilities are as artists in this troubled time.

Proceeds form the independent single will go to Plus One.

“We are proud to be able to partner with Plus One (www.plus1.org). Proceeds from the sale of the song will go to defending the rights of the marginalized through Pivot Legal Society (Canada), ACLU Nationwide (USA), and W.A.V.E (EU).”

Here’s some new pop alternative from the UK. Band is called Viola Beach.

The hype says; “The Warrington four-piece have already been chosen as one of Annie Mac’s New Names for 2016 and their compelling energy bagged in a Radio 1 session at legendary Maida Vale Studios last November.”

Pretty straight forward.

New music from Filter? OK!

90’s industrial-lite grunge rockers will release their 7th record Crazy Eyes on April 8th.

Billboard Magazine says; “Crazy Eyes is hardly bereft of guitars but there are a substantial amount of electronics and effects in use. The result features heavy industrial crunch and solemn, ambient songs that reach back to Patrick’s time in Nine Inch Nails and the first Filter album, 1995’s Short Bus.”

Young Galaxy share the bonus track from their record Falsework.

Squamish Valley Music Festival this weekend. Coral and I are heading up on the Sunday so we’re excited for that.

New music! Young Galaxy are putting out a new record on October 30th called Falsework.  First single is “Body.”

PaperBag Records also commissioned a short story to go along with the record.

During the writing and recording of the Falsework, Young Galaxy and Paper Bag Records commissioned Scotiabank Giller Prize winning novelist/blogger/journalistSean Michaels to write a story that would work as a campaign piece to the album. Read the story here.

I have been posting songs up to Hype Machine now for awhile. I try to understand how it works, but after over a year I have no idea why some stuff gets the “hearts” and most does not.

I think generally electronic stuff out performs rock.  Metal and punk? Forget about it… but then there are bizarre exceptions.  Even the electronic stuff that takes off surprises me.  On my latest post of remixes… the Ed Sheeran song “I See Fire” remix crushes, 13,000 hearts… its Ok. Not changing my world. People love it.

The next most popular would be Lorde at just under 2,000. Then to my ear, the best song of the set… Young Galaxy, despite 14 blogs whipping it, 709 hearts.

Some songs are very popular with blogs and get a lot of posts, but that doesn’t always translate into hearts.

I wonder if I can ask Hype Machine on the data of what type of people visit the site?

In all my worlds, there seems to be little crossover.  Generally stuff that is popular on The Zone doesn’t chart very high on Hype Machine. And the stuff that crushes Hype Machine never gets requested when I DJ a dance party.  I figure the internet is a big place and all the weirdoes who like a certain sound end up on Hype Machine…maybe inflating the importance?  Maybe I live on an Island…

I was thinking about Disclosure the other day.  Their record Settle is considered one of the better dance records of 2013 by many critics….but the band has NEVER been requested to me when I DJ, ever.  Granted…I generally DJ weddings, but still, you’d think the BEST dance record would get at least one request?

22,000 hearts on Hype Machine
over 5,000,000 plays on soundcloud
over 25,000,000 on Youtube
Critical praise

Sorry one more… I think I posted this before but I have it on while reading the internet and I loves it.

Also… how about that Hobbit Movie?  Pretty good… the Justin Bieber song that came on during the credits threw me for a loop, but when the bros behind me started booing (or maybe they were booing the cliffhanger ending?) I giggled.

Turns out it wasn’t Justin Bieber, it was Ed Sheeran.

Another Bear Mountain post?  Yup.

I saw this song bouncing around the intertron today and immediately liked it.  Toronto producers Natural Animal put their pixie dust all over one my favourites off Vancouver based Bear Mountain’s XO record, “Faded.”

Young Galaxy will be in Victoria on Wednesday, September 25th for a show at Lucky Bar.  The band was up for a Polaris Music Prize but ultimately lost out to conscientious rockers Godspeed You! Black Emperor.  Who knows… maybe that’s for the best? I punched up Young Galaxy’s new single “Crying My Heart Out” on the radio and people called up all grouchy bemoaning how horrible this song is.  Weird…. I hear this song and I wanna make out.  When Catherine McCandless sings “and its hard, when I’m playing ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart'”… I melt.

I’m an old man. I have a parent/teacher talk at some weird hour Thursday morning…. but godspeed me! Imma try to be there tomorrow night.  haters goin’ hate.

CHYEA… I got a Tea Time jam for you.  Randomly stumbled on this band Vaults outta London Town.  This blog says MYSTERIES!
