Don’t cal this new Fall Out Boy record a comeback… according to the band, they were just resting their eyes.
On Monday Fall Out Boy shocked the world (well mostly kids that that are now floating around 20-years-old) with a new single and the promise of a record bombastically called Save Rock and Roll (May 7).
In the late 90s and early 2000s there was a band that moderately popular called Staggered Crossing, they had this hit. The band was fronted by a gentleman named Julian Taylor. The band played a lot of shows, toured all over the place and dissolved as bands do after a bunch of years (2007-ish).
Talking to Cameron’s Brewing, Julian Taylor talks about going in a different direction; “I was the singer of Staggered Crossing for more than a decade and all off a sudden, I needed a new outlet. I was also dealing with a lot of change. In a way, I began to really explore music and myself as a musician. Every idea was possible, every genre was open to interpretation, and the revelations have been empowering.”
Julian Taylor continued making music, started a record label, started a family and is back with a new project called Julian Taylor Band. The band recorded the song “Never Gonna Give You Up” in May of 2012. The song received some love on the radio in Ottawa and a music video that generated a few hits.
The song has now found its way to us here in Victoria.
Josie Geuer at Hot 89.9 says, “Once the hook hits, it’s game over! You’ll be singing it all day long. This track is a total earworm and will add interest to any Top 40 station’s playlist.”
The Zone’s resident DJ, Boitano…. put together a quick edit of The White Stripe’s “We’re Going To Be Friends.” Have a listen, maybe download it… and listen to The Modern Rock Mixtape today at 5PM on The Zone.
I’ve been on the new Tegan and Sara record today. Such an easy listen. I want to say fun, but lyrically they’re generally talking about hating themselves and breakups. But it sounds fun?
This Knocks remix is climbing the Hype Machine charts. I wanted to post the song “I Was a Fool” but I have a poor person’s music blog and 0’s and 1’s wouldn’t let me.
I’ll be interviewing Sara of Tegan and Sara fame today… FUN!
Happy Friday my friends. I’ll see you tonight at Veneto Lounge if you’re going out.

I have preschool fundraiser coming up. FUN ATTACK!
An email from my homeboy James Sutton in Vancouver brought a nice MP3 attachment. The band is called Mounties and features friend of The Zone, Mr. Hawksley Workmen, friend of The Zone Mr. Steve Bays (Hot Hot Heat) and Mr. Ryan Dahle (Limblifter/Age of Electric).
This is groovy. 60’s inspired, spaghetti westerny, modern DC soul. The group is called Misun.
The group have a cool story that I can relate to as a veteran worker-bee of the bar circuit.
The three multifaceted band members of the DC aquawave/emo-pop band Misun (pronounced ‘me-sun’) met while working in different capacities at the Dupont Circle bar/restaurant, Science Club in 2010. At the time vocalist Misun Wojcik waitressed part-time, often sharing overlapping shifts with resident DJs William DeVon and Nacey (production). The three soon discovered a common musical bond and began writing and recording in Nacey’s bedroom studio on U Street.
Wildlife Control are a bi-coastal brother-act (one dude lives in Brooklyn and one lives in San Francisco…. oy vey, and I thought I had it hard when my ex-girlfriend lived in Vancouver and I was WAY over in Victoria). They gained some notoriety when their stop-motion music video for “Analog or Digital” went moderately viral racking up 350,000+ views.
Hard work, quality tunes, and creativity have started to generate some positive hype for the band. A showcase in New York at CMJ, their debut self-titled record was the highest charting indie release on CMJ Top 200, and they received some attention from Wired Magazine.
That’s all well and good Wildlife Control, but have you done for me lately? Oh a new single? Right, and even MTV likes it… we better hit play and see what’s up.
Talking to MTV Hive, Samul Shah says of ‘Different:’ “‘Different’ wasn’t really inspired by a particular person, but by the people and things we see in our neighborhoods every day. They’re often referred to as being “hipster” places, which of course has some negative connotations, but they are truly great places to observe the uniqueness and beauty of the world and the people in it.”
Now you should watch that video for “Analog or Digital” because its pretty good.
Savage, industrial tinged, fuzzy electro music from LA. I’m listening to Weeknight Sinners. The song they are sharing to get us amped on their March 1st record is “Give Me a Taste.” The song reminds me of the type of music I’d hear watching a horror or sci-fi film in the 90s. I mean that is best of ways….not a whole lot of info right now. The band seems pretty new. 100+ streams on this song. 30-some-odd Facebook likes. They’re getting there.
Here is what they wrote in to me:
we’re a two piece project from los angeles we call ourselves “weeknight sinners” we recorded this back in july on an old 16 track recorder, without computers a friend heard it and said he would release this on his new label for us his credit cards were maxed for the cause we plan to release our album on vinyl/cd on 3.1.13 we really hope you like it
Checking out Vancouver production duo WMNStudies today… they sent me an original dance song called “Backburner.” The song features the vocals of Mr. Golladacto. Catchy….
