record girl

Traveling back in time on Valentine’s Day for a romantic song from Broken Social Scene.  I had a minor obsession with this song when  I first made my way to Victoria.  You’ll find this cut on You Forgot it In People.

I heard it the other day randomly and it filled me with warmth…so I’ll share it with you today.

Go with yourself.

Strokes
The Strokes dropped the new single “All The Time” on radio today…the song will be part of Comedown Machine (March 26th RCA/Sony).

Here is an article on NME talking a bit of what is known.

Here is the song.

Go with yourself.

Tame Impala Elephant
Perth, WA psych rockers Tame Impala are gearing up to invade Canada.  I will welcome them as liberators!

The single being sent to radio from their most excellent record Lonerism is called “Elephant.”

The song will be featured in a Blackberry 10 TV commercial… so you’ll hear it.  And whaaaaaaat? They’re also playing Sasquatch.

I’ve been feeling Portland’s Red Fang the last couple days.  These guys rip…so good that the ONLY thing that would make them better is if they were called The Hooded Fang.

The record is not new, Murder The Mountains was released back in 2011.  Since the Sasquatch 2013 lineup announcement, I’ve been listening to lots of the bands taking part.  Red Fang have stood out as a band I wish I could see there.

The song I chose for you off their album is called “Dirt Wizard,” because it had wizard in the title.

Another band that I think has the potential to take Sasquatch to DEFCON 1 is Sacramento’s Death Grips.  Music to freakout the norms.

Lastly, let’s travel across the Salish Sea and enjoy the latest feature track from the Fraser Valley’s We Hunt Buffalo.

Loud it up.

∆ (alt-J) are the popular kids in the class right now.  The won the Mercury Prize in the UK, they are weird, and the New York Times like them… things are looking up!

Not really my personal style…until I heard a remix, and now I am all about it!  This Acid Invaders remix has seen some heavy feature in my DJ sets (when I can sneak it in between the “Thrift Shops” and the “anything by Rihanna”).

I LOVE this cut and its a free download from the soundcloud page.

and since we’re hanging out on remixes right now…

shakedown

One of the dudes from Miami Horror polished up this Smashing Pumpkins anthem.

GNK says, “A remake of one of (my) favorite bands growing up. I wanted to make this song a little more dance floor friendly. Hope you shake it down!”

AcresOfLions_BrightLights_SingleCover_sm
Victoria, BC’s Acres of Lions spent much of 2012 on the road.  It seemed like they played almost every city, town, village and trading post in British Columbia.  They went East and they went further East to England.  Finally, when the last tour t-shirt was sold and and end was insight, they holed up in a HoJo in Toronto (with a POOL!) and buried themselves in a studio to record.

The new record will be called Home(s). The ‘s’ in the parentheses maybe speaks to the nomadic life of these guys.  They have homes where they’re from, homes where they live now (kinda… Victoria) and then all the friends they have on the warpath across Canada and now in England.

Our first feature cut off the album is called “Bright Light.” The song has singer Jeff Kalesnikoff reflecting on his youth that launches into an anthemic chorus.  As the title implies, musically the song is very bright and propulsive.

Buy the single on iTunes TODAY!

Acres will be celebrating their album release with us here in Victoria on Friday, March 29th at Lucky Bar.  Industry friends can look for them at CMW in Toronto! The rest of Canada can find your city on this LIST.

Vince
Vince Vaccaro is a warrior. The man has been creating and performing as long as I’ve been in Victoria…and his time began before that.

Recent adventures had Vince traveling and touring again in Australia.  His new record is called Byron Songs and features songs primarily written while hanging out at Byron Bay.  The songs were brought back to Canada and polished up in Victoria with the usual cast of Victoria music friends (who you’ll hear on a few of the songs, I read the names Adam Kittredge and Mike Edel).

The record also includes a favourites from the radio here in Victoria, “The Dove.”  Vince sent me a message to say the feature song will be “Let Me Go” so let’s punch that up.

“Let Me Go” isn’t a new new song, as its bounced around a bit here at the radio station (I think he pressed it as a 7-inch single to give as a promo for his Australia trip), but on Byron Songs, it is broken down a bit for an acoustic mix.

and if you’re new to Vince Vaccaro and liking what you’re hearing, let’s revisit “The Dove.” (he also has maybe close to a half dozen “hits” locally on the radio in Victoria…so he is worth your time time to explore.)

For Vince Vaccaro fans that want to get past “The Dove” and “Let Me Go,” you’ll find a collection of new, and re-interpreted songs streaming on Soundcloud.  Poke around and send Vince a comment, “like,” “heart,” or maybe even plunk down a couple bucks and buy the thing to help Vince take the next adventure!

shy mirror
I was reading THIS ARTICLE in Spin the other day…and reminding myself that, “yeah, I really like FIDLAR.”

When all of a sudden…. an email bounced in from a band called Shy Mirrors.  Really fuzzy, lo-fi, garagey punk.  Has a pop hookyness to it.

There are a lot of songs I like off their 150 limited press vinyl release Negative Collector…. but this jam kinda reminded me of Alkaline Trio, so it wins.

and FIDLAR is pretty fucking cool too.

Victoria’s Steph Macpherson worked with Dave Wallace on a music video for the title track off 2012’s Bells and Whistles.

The video was filmed at “Victoria’s legendary landmark,” Craigdarroch Castle.

Zoners will remember Steph from this jingle that we play on the radio.

atlas Genius

Aussie brothers Atlas Genius put out their first full length record, When It Was Now, in North America on February 19th.  This single, “If So,” first showed up as part of FIFA 2013 on your favourite video game system.

If you dig “Trojans” you are getting more of a good thing with “If So.”
