Where You Want To Be
I’ve been on a ferocious Taking Back Sunday kick lately…. the song A Decade Under the Influence came on the satellite radio the other day. When I got home from driving around I had to dive into my old CDs to find Tell All Your Friends and Where You Want to Be.

and a few from Tell All Your Friends.

This is an exert from an old blog post I wrote about this song:  “One of the oddest experiences in my life involved a trip to Bob’s cabin at Christina Lake one summer.  We had just arrived on the property and were unpacking.  I had climbed up the stair in behind the cabin and around the side where there was a clearing looking out over the lake.  It suddenly began to pour rain very heavily.  The song “You Know How I Do” began to play loudly, inside my head… but the sound seemed to me to be originating from outside my body.  It was very surreal, like I was engulfed in sound. It was loud and drowned out every other sound.  A magical moment that has never replicated itself in my life, but I hold out hope that it will again one day.”

And here is another old blog post about that time me and Matt went to see them at Richards.

“And the time me and Matt saw them at Richard’s On Richards.

I can’t remember what summer it was, but we headed down for a snazzy quadruple bill of the hottest emo bands of the time, all headlined by The Used.  When we got there, there was a sign on the door that said 3 of the 4 bands couldn’t make it over the border.  FUCK.  We came to see TBS!

Turns out, the one band that got to Vancouver, was Taking Back Sunday.  They offered a refund at the door (sweet) then TBS played as the only band that night.  They played an “extended set” which was their whole first album.  and that was it.  One of the best shows I’ve been to.”

BROODS-Bridges-2014-1200x1200
BROODS is a duo from New Zealand.  Their ep BROODS came out at the end of January and their single “Bridges” is starting to climb the radio charts.  Already a hit in their native country, the brother/sister team of Caleb and Georgia are seeing some success in the US.

The song has seen some huge love on Hypemachine having been posted on Earmilk.

Check out BROODS May 9th at the Media Club in Vancouver.

Produced by Joel Little, the same man that worked with Lorde, let’s  get familiar with their cut “Bridges.”

Now, everybody bounce!

give us a break
Back in the day I was in a band called Smut Peddling Sam, and I had a radio show on the University of British Columbia’s CiTR that played predominately Canadian punk, rock, metal, indie….that sorta thing.  Living in the world put me in contact with a bunch of bands of the era.

My band released just one song and it showed up on the 2001 Spawner Records/Hourglass Records compilation Give Us a Break II.

Spawner collected a couple hundred bucks from a ton of bands, packed a compact disc full of tunes, then gave the discs away for free at Warped Tour stops.

The disc is full of great (mostly) Western Canadian bands of the early Oughts.  I think a song that might be of interest to modern rock fans today would be this cut from a group called My Buddy Dave.  The band featured a young Tyler Bancroft who would go on to form Said The Whale.   US readers to the blog might recognize “I Love You” which charted on US Modern Rock Radio last summer and is featured in this Samsung Galaxy commercial.

OK, Said The Whale… hot band in the year 2014.  Now let’s travel back to 2001.  Can you hear Tyler singing?

One more off that record because I still love the song to this day.  Calgary’s Darryl’s Grocery Bag and the song “Do You Like My Van?”

Isobel Trigger selfie

Victoria band and April band of the Month, Isobel Trigger, stopped by The Zone Afternoon Show the other day for a live performance.  The group covered the USS song “Yin Yang.”

***

The latest episode of Fact Checking the Morning Show. The Zone Morning Show host Dylan Willows did his Kermit the Frog impression on the radio.  I wanted to have it critiqued by an expert.

because
My friend Alix was cleaning out some old records the other day and asked if I’d make a good home for them. She has a good taste in tunes so I said, “ok.”

One of the records she dropped off yesterday, Explosions in the Sky‘s The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place.

A beautiful record.

I want to shout out to all the free radicals that check out the blog, “heart” some of the songs on Hype Machine, or throw me a “like” on Facebook.

I read this study on Nat Geo about how success breeds success… and those first few likes or attention can snowball to greater attention. The article might be worth your time if you’re in a band or any sort of attention industry.

Still loving Waters.

My man Pol was saying that Courtney Barnett was pretty choice on Jimmy Fallon last night. You should watch that.

Lastly, The New Arcades remixed Kyla La Grange’s “The Knife.”

There we go….

Orwells cover
Alan Cross asks on his blog today, “Does Alternative Radio Need to Rock More?”

He says that today’s alternative radio is more akin to the original spirit of alternative music than maybe people give it credit for…because grunge.

AC had read Sean Ross’ bit in Billboard which got the wheels turning.

Sean is great because he comes from the school of “stats don’t lie.”  He talks in facts and offers insight into the world of trends.  I love this line, “So does alternative radio need to rock? A little more. But only a little.”

He goes to to explain the history of the format, and how the textures and songs fit into the narrative of alternative radio, and ultimately to ratings success.

One song that Sean pulled out to illustrate a song that “rocks” in that traditional sense but is also melodic for mass appeal is actress Taylor Momsen‘s band The Pretty Reckless.

Personally, not my style but I can get behind the appeal.  Reminds me a bit of a Joan Jett for the year 2014.

A rock band that has been turning my crank for the past couple weeks is a group called The Orwells.

While getting ready for the day this morning, I punched up KEXP in Seattle, and John in the Morning dropped the needle on this cut.  So good.

shelia
I have a minor obsession with Junior Prom‘s “Shelia Put The Knife Down.”  I heard it the other day on Alt. Nation.  At first I laughed and said to my wife, “this is silly.”

And then I was singing it all weekend.

NEXT!

The band is called Waters and they’re from San Francisco (land of the dark wizards!). They have a hot jingle called “Got to My Head.” Song is nice, but I really dig this Geographers remix. You might too.

The Iron Heart
The Iron Heart are a rock & roll band based out of San Francisco…or maybe Napa? California. They sent over their cut “Woman.”

Let’s be more than friends, please “like” the blog on Facebook.

Also… what the heck is a “fortnight?”

Holocene (Satchmode Remix) Art
LA’s Satchmode sent of over his downtempo dreamscape remix of Bon Iver’s “Holocene.”

I like dreams, and I like Bon Iver, so we better hit play on this.

Hey, did you know The Morning After Show is on Facebook?  It’s true! Don’t be shy, throw my a “like.”

Nashville, Tennessee’s Wild Cub are releasing their song “Colour” as a single in the UK.  They sent over their fresh music video.  Let’s gather ’round the Youtube machine to have a gander.

Wild Cub is currently playing some shows in the US with Vampire Weekend.  Then its of to the UK for seven headliner shows.  Here is their North American radio single, “Thunder Clatter.”
