I love hockey so much. First pre-season match last night… Canucks looked good vs the Sharks. Can’t wait for October!

Woke up to this fine cover from Ben Howard. The British singer/songerwriter type was in the BBC 1 Live Lounge and put down a version of Kiesza’s “Hideaway.

My friend Misty posted this story the other day about a guy sailing around on a 50-year-old wooden sailboat that he restored.

Check out Twenty-Eight Feet.

The short documentary features a song by Ben Howard called “Old Pine.”

“Hot sand on toes, cold sand in sleeping bags. I come to know that memories were the best things you ever had.”

Ben is in the studio working on new music, but it was nice to dive back into this older cut.  great camping song.

As weather turns to summer on Vancouver Island, I think about camping, hiking and beach vacations and this song is the soundtrack.

Another British singer-songwriter fellow I came across today… James Bay. Don’t judge me, I clicked on his song today because his name is the same as a neighbourhood of Victoria.  True story.

Songwriting is difficult. There’s this little critic in my head, and all he ever says is “no, no, no, no, no.” Sometimes, (if I’m lucky) he says “maybe”, and once in a long while, he’ll say “yeah, alright.” That gets really frustrating, really fast.”

Finally… we travel to Sweden and the alt-pop of Tove Lo.

Ebba Nilsson performs her style of music under the banner Tove Lo. Her record Truth Serum came out in march and the song “Habit” is rising. A full length album will come later this year from island Records.

Talking to Billboard Tove Lo says of her breakup anthem, “At first I didn’t want to write something bad. But, when it was all over, being in that state of mind … I need to use that when I write. I can’t not.”

Elle explores the success of her song about heart-ache and discovers she was a grunge kid growing up.  Hey Lo, me too!

“Lo cites Nirvana and Courtney Love’s Hole as early inspirations. As a teen she was immersed in grunge culture, her hair dyed black. She has a tattoo of a cartoon-like girl harnessed to the back of a bumble bee inked along her left upper arm and says she only owns two pairs of shoes: Dockers sneakers and Candies.”

Elle describes the style of songwriter and her contemporaries, Robyn, Icona Pop, Mo, Lykki Li, as “Swedish femme pop.”

The music video is pretty choice.

Ben Howard Keep Your HEad Up
My head hurts today.  Trying to keep all the balls in the air is a lot of work.

Last night, Coral sent me a recipe to make Quinoa Pizza Bites, that was a victory.

This morning, I tried to donate blood, but they said I had no veins.  C’est dommage.

Today I am eating a tupperware full of plain quinoa… its not not delicious.

When I punched up Facebook, Vince Vaccaro posted a remix from a song that I am feeling.

Ben Howard’s posit-rock track “Keep Your Head Up.”

This song will be showing up in the set tonight at The Veneto Lounge!

Go with yourself.

It was a busy weekend of DJ gigs, Swiftsure, weddings, Veneto, and Power to Be events… but now that it is Monday and back to work, I get to relax!

The picture at the top of this blog is from the Power to Play event on Sunday.  Woke up with the birds for a Tough Mudder type race pitting various companies against each other to tackle some pretty extreme challenges culminating in the Mud Bog and then climbing the pyramid to ring the bell and finish the race!

Team Zone was a group of listeners and they placed 9th!  And were the top media team to finish.

Power to Play is coming to Vancouver in September at Stanley Park… so Vancouver friends, check it out.  It was mighty! (and they don’t have a radio partner yet… hint hint)

Right, cover song freakout… I got a couple for you.  Song one was tweeted at me by Matthew.  Matthew knowing that I love all things Ben Howard AND Carly Rae Jepsen send me a cover of “Call Me Maybe.”

Ben Howard – “Call Me Maybe” (Carly Rae Jepsen cover)

Download MP3 >> Ben Howard – Call Me Maybe

I like this take as its a pretty dramatic spin on the bright Top 40 original.  You recognize the CR Jepsen, but its a Ben Howard tune.  Same words, same basic arrangement, different energy.  Love the vibe.

The other cover I heard today was Morning Parade covering Black Key’s “Gold on the Ceiling.”  They had the boys on SiriusXM Alt Nation talking about this jam.  The boys said they have stayed in a lot of nice hotel and a lot of dumpy motels and this song speaks to that.

Morning Parade – “Gold on the Ceiling” (Black Keys cover)

Once again… a great cover because they take the song, give it a different spin while maintaining the essence.

In other news…. Game of Thrones this weekend… Battle of the Blackwater lived up to the hype in production.  As far as a TV series go, it was mighty.  Guys having their heads cleaved off, magical green fire and then!  GACK! My Shaw Box died.  And since then, no TV.  I’d complain to Shaw, but my resident Shaw employee is at Sasquatch.  The worst.  Oh well, I look forward to finishing the battle when she gets back.  Besides, no TV for a day… aside form the battles I’ll have with Madelyn tonight, probably for the best.

Go with yourself.
