NEW Vampire Weekend

vampire-weekend
Spin Magazine has more info on the upcoming Vampire Weekend record.  The album has been dubbed LP3 (which I believe is a working title) and its due out on May 7th.

The band jumped into the fire that is the Australian summer (its so hot this year the weather service had to add two new colours to the weather maps) for a show in Sydney.  Someone bootlegged a  new song called “Arms.”

I saw the title for new Devendra Banhart jingle “Never Seen Such Good Things” and thought, “d’aww, I look forward to this pretty love song.”

Nope.

“Never seen such good things go so wrong.”

Neat.

“If we ever make love again, I am sure that it will be quite disgusting.”

Gnarly.

New record is out in March, its called Mala (Nonesuch Records).  Don’t you kind of expect this song to show up in a real hip Ryan Gosling film?

Blue Hawaii
Montreal’s Blue Hawaii is the side-project/ pseudo name of Braids lead singer Raphaelle Standell-Preston.

I have never really followed the group before, but Pitchfork said the 2010 music had a tropical vibe.

Her new record is called Untogether and the first feature song is “Try To Be.”  The song is very light and pretty.  It features repetitive acoustic guitar loops and chopped and repeated vocal melodies.

The song is a little spooky and gets stuck in my head.

grass tracks
Bluesy West Coast boogy, that is the best way to describe Victoria’s The Grass Tracks.

The boys will be stopping by The Zone Afternoon show on Wednesday for an interview and live performance at 4PM.

Our feature song on the radio is this beauty, “Joker.”

The band is up at UVi’c’s Felicita’s Pub on Friday with Towers and Trees.  FUN!

And find out more from this mighty Vic42 profile.

Paramore

New music today at the radio factory today.  Power-pop trio Paramore have their first single from their forth record “Now” available.  I don’t know if blogs all read each other and say the same things…. or maybe its true?  But Karen O-esque gets thrown around a lot to describe the vocal stylings of Hayley Williams.

Talking about the first single in Rolling Stone, “Now” “feels like the perfect way to start this new journey we are embarking on not only as a band but as a movement. To show people that you can lose battles but come back and win full on wars. You can make something out of even less than nothing.”

Enough talk, more rock.  Super poppy…I am sorry, this is going to ear worm in your head.

Airborne

New music out this week from a pair of journeymen modern rockers.  Lets get started with an emotional love song form The Airborne Toxic Event.

“Timeless” is a big, sweeping, traditional power ballad.  Now, before you scream BARF, its not all that bad.  Granted, I am a sucker for this band.  Billboard dives into the creative genesis behind the song.  Its where I lifted this quote from principle Mikel Jollett about dreaming up the track.

“I remember thinking, ‘Don’t write like you’re an indie rock artist or an art-rock band, don’t write like you’re trying to write an Airborne song, don’t try to be you — just write what’s in your heart.  It’s cheesy and it’s very Hallmark-y and I want to be like Kurt Cobain and say my whole life’s twisted and darker than that, but my deepest wish really is that.”

Billboard says the song is about “the search for a soulmate and the power of love to triumph over the fear of death.”

The Airborne Toxic Event will be in Vancouver on April 9th at The Vogue.

ColdWarKids
Cold War Kids return to the land of the currents with a new song called “Miracle Mile.”  The new album, Dear Miss Lonely Hearts, is out on April 2nd…. pre-order from iTunes on February 5th.

I am personally enjoyed the new Cold War Kids.  Its not rewriting rock and roll history by any stretch, but its a fun, modern, energetic song.

CWKs in Vancouver as well this Spring.  May 17th at the Vogue Theatre.

we hunt buffalo

Modern Rock is doing some fun and interesting things…. it is getting poppy.  Real poppy… like top 40, but made by cool bands/artists.  Its folky.  And gurgling underground, the guitar rockers rage on.  Dialing up the time machine to 1989 and stomping on the fuzz box.

We have been enjoying Fraser Valley band We Hunt Buffalo a bit on The Zone since they’re CFOX Seeds final.  They’re single “The Search” is a quality jam.

The boys will be playing the suddenly World famous Waldorf Hotel on Thursday.  They are also currently readying their next record.

In the meantime, WHB sent me this song showing up on a split 7-inch they’re doing with If We Are Machines.

Pitchfork had very positive things to say about Amherst, MA retro rockers CaliforniaX.

“stompboxed-out mix of run’n’gun hardcore, molasses-thick grunge, and burly classic rock”

Cool.

Back in March, the POWER TRIO released a 7-inch single.  Here’s the flip side “Mummy.”

According to the rags in the know, “Pond Rot” is a fanstastic cut off their new self-titled album (Don Giovanni Records) which came out yesterday.

Hit the blog on Facebook with a wet sloppy “like.”

raven
A Victoria music collective has got together for a chilling, light-electro cover of Mumford & Sons.

The group is called The Raven… this single leans heavily on the female vocals of Steph MacPherson, with production from Brandon DeLyzer and the studio/mastering talents of Joby Baker.  The credits for The Raven Collaborative are mostly suedo-names I think…. it reads:

Featuring Petit-Loup, Snakebite, Lunawolf, Remington, Cinder, And The Raven.
Produced by Brandon DeLyzer
Mastered by Joby Baker

Whatever, lets just get to the song.

Such a pretty take.  Great video too.

Great job team!

Woke up this morning feeling generally overwhelmed.  Not a good feeling at all.  I get that vibe after I play too much video games.  Its the worst time suck that accomplishes little (though my Dutch colonies on Greenland are very profitable).

My buddy Bob told me about this game called Rocksmith that lets you play an actual guitar on the Xbox and gets you learning and rocking.  That sounds better…. though I should really work on dusting off my Maschine. I was working through some tutorials but then just stopped and I tucked it in a drawer.

SirSly_AlbumArtwork_2

Sir Sly is the greatest band in the whole wide world.

That probably isn’t true, but I was reading a blog post about blog posts that said a “shocking” statement off the top is critical for blog success!  (Thanks Chris).

But sirsly, Sir Sly is pretty good. Hilly Dilly had these guys on their blog yesterday and said something about them being perfect!  Sir Sly’s Ghosts ep went hot yesterday on iTunes and I imagine I’ll be downloading it for some heavy feature at The Veneto Lounge (Friday nights yo).

So dark and melodic.  I just settle right into these jams from the LA based group.

CIB
I love the rich layered sounds swimming around on Lawrence, Kansas’ Cowboy Indian Bear.

Kansas City website The Pitch says, “It’s a six-minute bit of dark indie rock, both skittish and elegant (…).”

Their literature uses the word ethereal.  Good word.  Cowboy Indian Bear put out a record called Live Old, Die Young in the spring.

I feel like I could listen to this song all day.
