TOO MUCH GLITZ
An email from my homeboy James Sutton in Vancouver brought a nice MP3 attachment. The band is called Mounties and features friend of The Zone, Mr. Hawksley Workmen, friend of The Zone Mr. Steve Bays (Hot Hot Heat) and Mr. Ryan Dahle (Limblifter/Age of Electric).

The Globe & Mail have a pretty good story explaining what is known about the band at this time.  Exclaim also has a few points.

Now, the song.  It is called “Headphones.”  A jangly indie bopper that talks about burying you head in hi-fi stereo bliss.

Misun
This is groovy. 60’s inspired, spaghetti westerny, modern DC soul.  The group is called Misun.

The group have a cool story that I can relate to as a veteran worker-bee of the bar circuit.

The three multifaceted band members of the DC aquawave/emo-pop band Misun (pronounced ‘me-sun’) met while working in different capacities at the Dupont Circle bar/restaurant, Science Club in 2010. At the time vocalist Misun Wojcik waitressed part-time, often sharing overlapping shifts with resident DJs William DeVon and Nacey (production). The three soon discovered a common musical bond and began writing and recording in Nacey’s bedroom studio on U Street.

Well ain’t that a pip.

Wildlife Control
Wildlife Control are a bi-coastal brother-act (one dude lives in Brooklyn and one lives in San Francisco…. oy vey, and I thought I had it hard when my ex-girlfriend lived in Vancouver and I was WAY over in Victoria).  They gained some notoriety when their stop-motion music video for “Analog or Digital” went moderately viral racking up 350,000+ views.

Hard work, quality tunes, and creativity have started to generate some positive hype for the band.  A showcase in New York at CMJ, their debut self-titled record was the highest charting indie release on CMJ Top 200, and they received some attention from Wired Magazine.

That’s all well and good Wildlife Control, but have you done for me lately?  Oh a new single?  Right, and even MTV likes it… we better hit play and see what’s up.

Talking to MTV Hive, Samul Shah says of ‘Different:’ “‘Different’ wasn’t really inspired by a particular person, but by the people and things we see in our neighborhoods every day. They’re often referred to as being “hipster” places, which of course has some negative connotations, but they are truly great places to observe the uniqueness and beauty of the world and the people in it.”

Now you should watch that video for “Analog or Digital” because its pretty good.

Go with ye’self.

Weeknight Sinners
Savage, industrial tinged, fuzzy electro music from LA.  I’m listening to Weeknight Sinners.  The song they are sharing to get us amped on their March 1st record is “Give Me a Taste.”  The song reminds me of the type of music I’d hear watching a horror or sci-fi film in the 90s.  I mean that is best of ways….not a whole lot of info right now.  The band seems pretty new.  100+ streams on this song. 30-some-odd Facebook likes.  They’re getting there.

Here is what they wrote in to me:

we’re a two piece project from los angeles
we call ourselves “weeknight sinners”
we recorded this back in july on an old 16 track recorder, without computers
a friend heard it and said he would release this on his new label for us
his credit cards were maxed for the cause
we plan to release our album on vinyl/cd on 3.1.13
we really hope you like it

I do like it. My god that vocal is nice.

Fun Fact: The Morning After Blog is on Facebook!  (ok, I don’t know if that is fun…but it is)

tightrope
Walk The Moon packed up their latest single “Tightrope” as an ep (limited vinyl here).

Some interesting b-sides, acoustics and a cover!  Walk the Moon take on classic 1983 Talking Heads “Burning Down The House.”

In related, but unrelated to the ep news… there is also a remix of “Tightrope” by j.viewz that was uploaded today… free download.  Good times.

Happy Monday!

KillTheWithColour
A beauty post from Hilly Dilly…. Toronto production team Kill Them With Colour.  I’m tagging these bros as local because they began producing in Victoria back in 2008.  I don’t think I ever crossed paths with KTWC while in Victoria…but they’re doing some interesting stuff out East (I wonder if they know Dean?).

KTWC take on Kendrick Lamar… the critically acclaimed hip-hopster.  The boys have created a beautiful chilled out environment, where the chorus locks in on repeat.

Lazy Sunday…better get the kid dressed, we need to buy a wedding magazine (apparently I’m in it?) then check out Beacon Hill Park! Maaaaaaaaaaybe a hotdog from Big Wheel Burger…. maaaaaaaaaayvbe.

macklemore
Seattle’s Macklemore (heroes of Rifflandia V) have shot to the top of the pops.  Claiming the number one spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 and new streaming chart.  Though the song “Thrift Shop” has its detractors, there is no denying that is mass appeal right now.

Fun white guy hip hop is always a good time….and it got me thinking of 2009’s “Stationary Robbery” from USS‘s Questamation.  Boitano dropped this jam during the Friday Live Mix and it got me fired back up on the track.  I thought I better share this.

I think if you’re getting down to Macklemore right now, then you can probably also get down to two of my favourite bros from Toronto.

Lazy Sunday.

Technical Difficulties: new broadcasters hate it.  But the journeymen don’t sweat it….because in the chaos, the best radio (could)  get made.

If you go with the flow, be cool… heck the audience barely notices.

I was listening to Jian Ghomeshi today on the ride into work… he was trying to get author Timothy Ferriss on the line from LA and right at go time, on live radio, the line went dead.  PANIC! (well maybe for the producer) but Jian said, “he we’ll sort this out, hang tight, check out Montreal’s Young Galaxy.” (he didn’t say it exactly like that)

I am so thankful for the error.  The new Young Galaxy song is a beauty.  The big blogs have been all over “Pretty Boy” for the past 24 hours, Jian jammed it out across the country today, and the soundcloud is floating around 20,000 streams.  Not bad.

The dream-poppers’ new album is called Ultramarine (April 23, Paper Bag).  Our first feature song is “Pretty Boy” and I have had it on repeat since I arrived at the radio factory.  Its such a supportive song… you guys wish she was singing to you.

I hear this song and I think it could be such a nice non-traditional first dance song,or a side 2, track 1 on a mixtape for your crush, or maybe remixed for the dance floor.

Go with yourself.

ontheheart

Greeting fellow music friend… today we explore a song off a concept album! (don’t roll your eyes at me son…its a fun concept!)

The band from Toronto is called Wildlife.  These five Ontario friends set out on their up-coming record, Of The Heart (February 26, Wax Records), to explore the conditions of the heart.  They say;

“This new record is about the engine that drives us and carries us along that road…it is a love letter, an essay on the HEART: everything it does for us, to us, how it hurts us, helps and keeps us going. We put our hearts into making this thing, completely, with all the violence and romance we could muster.

Recording happened with Peter Katis (Interpol, The National), and Gus Van Go and Werner F (Hollerado, The Stills).  Alright, your resume checks out…. let’s have a listen.

Nice, big, full, anthemic sound.

Go with yourself.
