younotus

First up! Direct from Berlin, it’s Younotus!

Ruth from Minnesota sent over some indie pop from Axel Mansoor.

Wendel at Heroic sent over another one from WRLD.  “Stranded.”

To kick off their debut North American tour, WRLD & smle have joined heads in the track “Stranded”. The track is a fusion of two sounds, highlighting WRLD’s retro synths and smle’s luminescent future bass vibes. With the addition of Kiddo’s youthful vocals, “Stranded” comes together as electrifying and undeniably “feel good” from both upcoming artists.

white-panda

The White Panda sent over their punched up take on Verite’s most excellent The 1975 cover of “Somebody Else.”

In an email Tom from White Panda said, “We thought it would be fun to give a more dancey edge to her soothing vocals, and were really pleased with how it came out.”

Yesterday was my daughter’s 9th birthday!

I took the day off at the radio station so my wife and her mother could Madelyn to a tea house in Vancouver.

I totally flaked on this year. I wanted to theme her 9th birthday after the movie 9. Do you remember that movie?  When Madelyn was a baby (or like toddler) she used to watch that movie all the time. I must have seen it a thousand times.

And I remember thinking, “when she turns 9, I’ll get her like a 9 birthday cake or something.”

But then life happened and the obsession for the film 9 was replaced and replaced again. And replaced again and she is into different things now.

Today we’re taking a gaggle of 9-year-olds to see the Lego Batman movie. Fun. Pray for me and my wife.

And how about that Coheed & Cambria at the end of the trailer. I’m pumped!

The Chainsmokers had a chance to work with Chris Martin from Coldplay and at the Brit Awards they debuted the colab. Alex and Drew share in an email: Well to give a little background we had heard through the grapevine that Coldplay listened to our music sometimes before they went on stage. So we reached out with the big old question mark about potentially working together. To say we were in shock when they said they would love to would be an understatement. So about 3 months ago we went into the studio and on the first day came up with what is now this song. Obviously it took some tinkering and stuff but working with Coldplay was incredible, Chris and the band are such visionaries and they bring the same warmth in their music as they did to to this project.

unnamed-4

On Friday, the official Madsonic remix of Rae Sremmurd’s Much Mega Hit “Black Beatles” comes out. To hype the record, they cut a trailer featuring Battlefield 1 visuals.

It’s pretty slick…

Battlefield 1 is one of my favourite games. I’m amped on the They Shall Not Pass expansion in March. The French armies and new maps look outstanding. And how about this tank behemoth?

When are we getting the Somme…or even East Africa campaign?

No Age band photo

My 3-year-old son has discovered the record player and enjoys putting on “mus-kik.”

He wanders over to the records, pulls something that and then wants help putting it on.

The other day he pulled out No Age’s 2013 Sub Pop record An Object.  It a very bright and loud looking album and I can understand why it caught my kid’s eye.

We fired it up and it just reminded me how much I used to jam these guys! No I am back in a No Age all the time party.

And let’s revisit an old Madelyn Review. I should make more of these.

Look at that, the band is recording a new record in LA!

leeroy-stagger

Leeroy Stagger took the train (or tour van, West Jet, pack mule?) from Lethbridge to Vancouver to film the music video for his new song “I Want It All.”

Leeroy writes in an email,

My new album Love Versus is my closest to a fully realized record to date. It’s also a milestone for me being the first recording made at my home studio in Alberta. It was an amazing experience being totally immersed in what I was doing and it allowed me to set a new standard for my music and return re-energized. I was fortunate to have Pete Thomas from The Attractions play on the album and Colin Stewart (The New Pornographers, Black Mountain, Dan Mangan), produce it.

There is a lot of darkness and maybe a bit of cynicism on this album, but there is also more hope and joy on it than anything I’ve done in the past. This is exemplified in the first single “I Want It All” which I just released a video for.

His new record is called Love Versus and comes out on April 7th from True North Records.

lion-fox-bear

This is nice. I got a Facebook message from friend-of-the-show Andrea who said I really need to check out the new record from Lion Bear Fox. Especially the song “Shine.”

I hop on Instagram… Dottie is posting about her love of the song “Shine” off the new Lion Bear Fox. I think, “huh, I’ve heard off this band…”

Right, they used to go by The Lion The Bear The Fox (wise dropping all those the’s”…and I think they were a Peak Performance Band back in the day. And I am 92% sure they came by my show on The Zone.

Alright. Here’s what Andrea says, “Nathanial Ratecliff mixed with some Mumford and Sons meets some old school 70’s rock. Canada’s LION BEAR FOX. Check out if you are having a slow moving Saturday. Hope you have the time, these guys are truly awesome.”

Andrea liked “Mountains” too. A little more rocking.
