My Minor Obsession: Brisbane’s Mallrat and her song “Groceries”

Took me some time to get into Brisbane 20 year-old alternate pop singer Mallrat. Her new catchy single “Groceries,” about wanting to pick up a few things with a crush, has been banging around on Sirius XM Alt-Nation for a few days and sure enough I went back on my emails…and there she was.

Her name is Grace Shaw and she started making music maybe when she was 16. She started getting buzz straight away and stepped it up after graduation.

Her rise is hurtling upward right now. In a Fader interview she basically throws down vibes from The Secret. If you wish it to be true, it will come true. And I guess in her life, so far, it’s working. “Anything is possible if you just say that you’re going to do it. That’s honestly such a lifehack.”

Things are happening for her now. She toured with Post Malone. Sound like she is LA now. And continuing to work on writing and learning the craft.

and how cool is this? She’ll be at Osheaga in Montreal this summer. fun attack!

Times have been pretty good in Vancouver lately. Sun is out now. Kids are on Spring Break. And I’ve been rocking the morning show for Jeff, Scotty, and Karen as they are off on holiday.

The other day we went out Fort Langley and wandered a trail along the Fraser River.

Abbotsford’s Teen Daze shares new downtempo jam, “Longing”

Abbotsford producer, Jamison Isaak shared a song off his upcoming sixth Teen Daze album, BIOLUMINESCENCE. The record comes out on April 26th.

The song is called “Longing” and they created a music video to go along with it. Isaak says of the video: “The video was conceptualized by myself, Casey Kowalchuk and Mitch Huttema, and was filmed in the Fraser Valley, in British Columbia. The story of the inventor, working in a deep routine, only to finally create something that slips away from him, is something that I feel like I experience every time I release an album.”

Beautiful music video. Teen Daze throws down some fine, dreamy downtempo layered in synth and fuzz.

Listening to Anna Of The North’s new song, “Leaning on Myself”

Anna of the North shared her first new songs since her debut album Lover came out in 2017. She has been busy. the title track single end up on the Netflix show To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. The placement helped drive over 27 million streams on Spotify. She has lent her vocals to Tyler the Creator and The Chainsmokers and today we have “Leaning On Myself.”

Anna of the North spent time in LA. Her press release shared this quote form her time in southern California.


I’ve been writing a lot of music the past year. ‘Leaning On Myself” is one of the songs that came out of it, maybe one of my favourite songs. I remember flying home from the States where we wrote it and I started crying. I kind of realized I’d written the soundtrack of my life one year ago. There was a point where I went through a lot of shit and I wasn’t feeling very well. I had one big break down where I called my mom and just knew I had to change my ways. I had to cut some people out of my life, people I loved but I knew weren’t really good for me. It was tough. But I’m good now. Every time I listen to this song it takes me back to that moment. It’s fucking sad but also powerful. I’m very grateful for where I am today. In the end you only have yourself, you know, and I guess that’s ok.

I took a couple days of last week which was nice. Originally I took the days for my wife Coral’s birthday! But then she got terribly sick, so then I spent the days helping to look after our baby Elliot. Last Friday had the Arkells in Vancouver. They performed a pop-up show at a donut shop on Main Street so I brought the baby. Here we are with the boys in the band.

Smashing out FIDLAR’s new “By Myself”

LA punks FIDLAR shared a new song today called “By Myself.”  Song will be part of their new album, Almost Free, which will be out on January 25th on Dine Alone.

“Well I’m cracking one open with the boys, by myself”

Lead singer Zac Carper says of the song which he wrote in Hawaii, “I called up all my homies to have a drink with me and no one showed up. What a bunch of kooks.”

“A lot of the vibe was, ‘Well, why can’t we do that? Why can’t we have horns? Why can’t we have key changes? Why can’t we have a harmonica loop?‘,” Zac Carper said. “It was about taking the ceiling off. Having it be limitless. Ain’t no rules.” Elvis Kuehn added, “Almost Free feels like a step forward for us in a lot of ways. We tried to be true to ourselves and let the music come out naturally, without fear of how people would receive it.”

Black Pistol Fire share ripper new song “Level”

Austin rocking duo Black Pistol Fire shared a new song the other day called “Level.”

Guitarist/vocalist Kevin McKeown and drummer Eric Owen are originally from Toronto but relocated to the Texas capitol. BPF have a big 2019 lined up with new music and festival dates.

Oh you’re dancing real close….you’re making it hard for me!

DJ’d a Christmas Party last night. My first DJ gig since the middle of October. I headed to the Island to DJ an Octoberfest type happening.

I will say, I’ve enjoyed the break….DJing less makes the events I do a lot more fun. Done (I think) are my weeks of 4 (or more!) parties.

Having this random Christmas party the other night meant trolling soundcloud again for some fun remixes. I wanted to post a few from the “a-sied” department

90’s throwbacks are still a thing. This is 1997’s “Too Close” by Next.

I’m not proud, but I have been on a fierce 70s, 80s soft rock kick. I’m a bunch closer to 40 than 30 so my throwbacks take me back to being a kid and listening Adult Contemporary radio in the family station wagon and then later, Dodge Caravan. 1410 CFUN!

I heard Christopher Cross’ 1980 easy breezy “Ride Like The Wind” ….sometime ago? Maybe when Sirius XM had the Yacht Rock channel going….I HAD to have a remix. This one proved a challenge to find a legit download. I ended don Beatport and buying a whole compilation of Joey Negro jams just for this song. So DJ Negro wins this round.

Hits of yesterday and today remix collection ends today with Huey Lewis and News’ “Power of Love.” The power bomb from 1985 was written for the film Back To Future.  I love this song, this remix is…to my ear…just OK, but it fits the set….

Headstones’ Hugh Dillon says the band had no future when they recorded Picture of Health

Headstones will be touring this fall in support of the 25th anniversary of their breakout album, Picture of Health.

Hugh Dillon called into CFOX to talk about the reissue and the upcoming tour. He explained what was going on in the lives of the band members in the early 90s. He talked about some of the personal stories behind the songs and how 25 years later, they still sound so good.

 

Headstones will be crossing Canada this fall in support of of the 25th anniversary reissue of the iconic Picture of Health. Headstones will front-to-back the album live. A few of the songs they’re pulling out show have rarely if ever been played live.

City and Colour’s Dallas Green on his new live album Guide Me Back Home

City and Colour’s Dallas Green took a moment to talk to CFOX about his new love album Guide Me Back Home. Dallas recorded every show of an extensive 28 date Canadian tour. His friend Karl Bareham came along to record every show and then the two of them pulled the best takes to curate 21-song record that represents nights throughout the tour, coast-to-coast.

Guide Me Back Home is out digitally on October 5th on Green’s own record label, Still Records. Physical copies on compact disc and vinyl will be November 23rd.

Green says about starting his own record label; “I see Still Records as a way to draw attention to projects that are important to me. Dine Alone was started to put out my first album, and it’s been very successful and grown into something really special since then. Still Records is an extension on those ideals and a place where I’m able to curate a collection of things that I think deserve to be heard and enjoyed.”
