thrice

Because everything old is new again…we have some Thrice coming out. Thrice’s 9th, To Be Everywhere is To Be Nowhere, is out on May 27th. First share song is called “Blood On The Sand” and you know what? To my ears it sounds real good. Real good.

After watching a year of fear make people do terrible things, and now on the precipice of more of the same, this song is an anthem for anyone that’s had enough of it,” says frontman Dustin Kensrue.

I wish rock & roll was popular. The band is on tour, nothing in our neighbourhood.

isotopes

We had a big Good Friday. Started with a movie…Zootopia. I only got to see about half before Jack had had enough. But Coral and Maddy said it was good. Ikea, some greek food, frozen yogurt, then back home.

But it was a sunny holiday Friday and the party needed to continue so Coral and I packed up the kids and headed to What’s Up Hot Dog on Hastings near Nanaimo. We like that place…because the food is good, we can bring the kids…but just a little bit it feels like a pub. Plus bitching soundtrack, pinball and cheap(ish) beer.

The dude that owns it, or works there, or both? Is in a band.

The Isotopes Punk Rock Baseball Club.

Influences include the ’94 Expos? Alright!

Like I said, the music in What’s Up is always good. How about this one? late 70s, early 80s (into the 90s) UK garage punk. The Revillos “Yeah Yeah.” I mean honestly, how many different words do you need in a song?

unnamed (3)

Anna of The North from Norway is a rising chill vocalist.

Baby” is a slow, synthy, sparkly song, capturing the energy of what it’s like to be awake at 3 AM thinking of that other person. – NOISEY

She’s touring Europe in April with Kygo. That should be pretty big for her. I love her style. Remember that Chainsmokers remix of “Sway?” Fuffff…..so good.

eighty ninety

This is different and really pretty. The pair of brothers go by Eighty Ninety and don’t say too much about themselves.

They’re based out of New York…one of them might have or does work in film?

This song is light…or lite? Now lite looks too much like Coors Lite….light.

swim season

Alt rockers Swim Season are from Melbourne. Honestly, I clicked on this email the first time because it came just after I signed my daughter up for swim club. And it was the next email that came into the blog that evening. I feel like that means something.

Their ep Cascades came out back in November, and they sent over their single “Gold Cloak City.” Is this song about King’s Landing? I think so.

Lucius

My wife Coral facebooked this one over. She must have been watching Ellen…Lucius have a song called “Born Again Teen.”

Yeah that’s fun!

Kaleo

Kaleo is cool. Friends from school from a town just outside Iceland’s principle city of Reykjavik. Getting a ton of buzz for this slow burner “Way Down We Go.” The band is already a bit of a big deal in Iceland and Europe.

Their name is borrowed from another Island kingdom. Kaleo is Hawaiian for “The sounds.” neat.

The video is cool…channeling a little Joe Vs The Volcano.

malahat

Vancouver Island band Malahat sent over their single for a song called “The Grit.”

When I heard this song I messaged Ben back and said, “I like it, reminds me of Monster Truck!” And he said that’s great because that band is big influence on them.

They’ll be in Vancouver on May 13th for a show at Studio Records and I’ll do my best to there (if I’m not DJing that night).

They’re also playing in Victoria on April 1st with Band of Rascals.

Kurt Rambis

Because I’m an old man, but also a DJ, I have to wear glasses when I’m at the turntables. But I think I need to get some sweet Kurt Rambis style athletic glasses, because looking down all the time my glasses fall off my head.

I was in Victoria on the weekend. A group of women yelled, “HARRY POTTER!” at me as I walked by them into Lucky Bar. I’ll take that. I think it was the glasses.

Miike Snow

Loving Miike Snow’s “Genghis Khan” single. His record iii came out earlier in March.

Is the song about extreme jealousy? Or control? Chill Miike…chill.

bobmoses
I mentioned Bob Moses’ “Tearing Me Up” on the last blog post and forgot I haven’t put up the Vancouver-and-now-New York deep house duo.

I love it when I’m DJing and play a song…and you see everyone bopping and grooving and folks come up to ask, “what is this? I like it!” Maybe a couple phones out in the restaurant shazamming.

The bartender came up after this song, “the staff likes this type of stuff. Play more.”
