Austra-Olympia
Did you make the time to see Austra at Rifflandia V? Man, I missed which was a real shame. I should check with @RiffRumours to see if she might come back.

Austra’s new record is called Olympia, Pitchfork says its pretty good.  Exclaim says its influenced by early house and techno. Neat.

Let’s punch up the feature cut “Painful Like.”

Grouplove-Ways-to-Go
Grouplove are an American “indie” rock sounding band (the nucleus met in  New York; now based out of LA)… we remember these guys from their songs on The Zone; “Colours” and “Tongue Tied.”

The new jam from their upcoming record Spreading Rumours is called “Ways to Go.”  Already spinning on heavy rotation in LA on KROQ… pretty much means this song will be a summer 2013 party rock anthem.

Here’s an interview they did with some NYC blog.

And now… thee song!

Go with yourself.

Voyager
Steve Bays, the pride of Victoria and one the great heroes of Hot Hot Heat has emerged with a new project branded as Fur Trade.

The band immediately ended up on Last Gang Records with an album all ready for July 25th called Don’t Get Heavy.

The first single at the Zone (and the second released) is called “Voyagers.”

This blog RIGHT HERE has a nice interview with Fur Trade.

Go with yourself.

ms-mr

MOAR Lazers…. yes, another electro jam driven by pretty vocals… what can I say? its a weakness.  BUT, this track is remixed by (I wish they were) friends of the show CHVRCHES.  Neat.

MS MR (Miss Mister) are Lizzy Plapinger and Max Hershenow.  Their record Secondhand Rapture came out in May.  Its alright… I enjoy.  But hey… don’t take my word for it, My Best English Mate was tweetin’ up the band the other day!

Happy Monday dance monster.

in Triangles
Some dark synth driven music from the Rain Forest Kingdom.

The collective is called & The Raven.  At its center, & The Raven is producer Brandon  Delyzer.  He creates, writes and performs with a fluid collection of artists and singers.

His current record is called In Triangles.  The feature cut is “Retreat.”

The music video is a dark and spooky affair.

Nico Vega is a Los Angeles rock & roll band who busted into the mainstream’s consciousnesses when their 2009 single “Beast” was used in the TV commercial for the video game Bioshock.

Nico Vega is now soaring and getting ready to release their album Lead to Light.  They have a tour with Crash Kings gearing up. Check out the dates to see if one works for you.

Go with yourself.

wil
The Vancouver Island Cultural Festival will feature the pride of Qualicum Beach, Wil.  This veteran roots rockers will lockdown the spot just before Jon & Roy on Saturday at St. Ann’s Academy grounds.

Wil recently had a song features in a Travel Alberta commercial. Neat.

Go with yourself.

I had a chance to see Toronto’s Dinosaur Bones a couple summer’s back as part of Rifflandia.  they played fairly early on the Main-stage one morning…. I remember that day being exceptionally humid and my t-shirt was soaked! So off to the merch tent I went to get a new shirt and I settled on Dinosaur Bones (and couple 7-inch singles they were selling).

Dinosaur Bones have a new record out in August called Shaky Dream (August 6th, Dine Alone). Have a listen to the first feature song.

Go with yourself.

Monuments and Statues
Tonight I have a couple bango-y folksters for you.

Let’s begin in the City of Prisons and the Gateway to Gananoque… Kingston, Ontario.  The group is called Monuments and Statues.  The song they sent over is called “Red Dress.”  We’re gunna get some pretty female vocals, banjo and naughty little cello.  What?  yeah cello.  You got me, I gotta hear this.

OK, that was nice.  Maybe not the next Mumford & Sons… but I’d get my boogy on if they rolled into Victoria.

NEXT! A band from Santa Ana, California called Lipstick Lumberjack. Wait…. did someone say Santa Anna?  Remember the Alamo.

Lipstick Lumberjack describe the sound as Dreamy Folk-Pop with a dose of banjo.  We’re getting more of the sweet female female vocals and banjo twang… but I get the vibe that Lipstick Lumberjack have a fuller and more developed sound.

The song is a gosh darn sugar sweet romantic tune.

See you on the otherside. Hold up… go with yourself.

Discorder June 1999 - Interview with Braid by Jeremy Baker and photos by Jay Douillard
Well isn’t this neat. As I was telling you the other day… I’ve been on a bit of a Braid kick.  And I remembered interviewing the band during their final tour before splitting up  in mid-1999.  I emailed Discorder Magazine and Chirag found the article and scanned it for me! What a stud.

So there ya go (click the image to make it big)… Braid in 1999 talking to a 19-year-old college radio kid at The Starfish Room months before the breakup.  I can’t remember the exact date of the concert but the interview ran in the June 1999 issue of Discorder.  I also got a copy of that TAKE ACTION Punk rock sampler… neat, advertising works.

The show was rad and the guys were great…. The band would end up splitting up after the summer.  Bob Nanna would form a new group called Hey Mercedes.  Just as the whole emo thing started to swell they’d end up on one of the alpha emo record labels, Vagrant.  They released a couple records including 2003’s Lost Control.

Go with thy self.
