aylen-coldplay-fix-you
Happy Friday!  Friday tends to be the day when I think the most about remixes, chillwave, down-tempo… which I know sounds counter-intuitive to the ragers that most people have their sights set on…but hey, I’m a Friday cocktail lounge DJ.

My memories of the time when Coldplay released X & Y are of a record that felt underwhelming.  My opinion has changed over the years and I appreciate the slow dance, feel-her-up songs from their third album.

New Jersey producer Aylen has traveled back to 2005 to put a remix spin on single “Fix You.”

***

Ultraista is a UK act featuring Laura Bettinson’s vocals bouncing around the sounds of producer Nigel Godrich (Radiohead) and Joey Waronker (Beck, R.E.M.).  Thier self titled record came out in the fall.

Four Tet is cool.

Happy Friday, stay safe, Merry Christmas.

This was on the radio today… some history on SANTA!

hannahgeorgas2Tonight at Royal Theatre in Victoria, Mother Mother and Hannah Georgas are performing a sold out show.  In front of the concert, Jasmin Parkin from Mother Mother stopped by for an interview, then Hannah Georgas and band came for a conversation and performance.  Her performance of the single “Robotic” was magical.

If you like interviews, have a listen to our conversation on The Zone where we talk about booty dancing, Jian Ghomeshi, Wal-Mart, Ryan Guldemond, her time in Victoria, and the Arkells.

Here is my interview with Jasmin Parkin from Mother Mother where we discuss this article out of Edmonton where they claim Mother Mother “the most hated band in Canada,”  Mother Mother getting signed to Last Gang Records, Jasmin joining the band in 2009, going to school with Ryan Guldemond and growing up on Vancouver Island and moving to Vancouver, how it’s going being Mother Mother, and “what would you be doing if you weren’t in Mother Mother?” ….

No Future. No Past.

cloud-nothings

This is the fucking raddest song alive.

Happy Thursday.

Gaslight-Anthem-Handwritten

The new Gaslight Anthem single is a song called “Here Comes My Man.”

Such a cool, romantic song that has Brian Fallon flipping the role of the protagonist from the male to female.  Singing the tale of fed-up woman leaving an unhappy relationship.

The music video came out in October.  The lead is played by the beautiful Elisha Cuthbert who (despite marrying a Toronto Maple Leaf) I love.

The Gaslight Anthem – “Here Comes My Man”

hey… remember that time Brian Fallon came to the Zone?  Yeah, me too.

Frightened-Rabbit-Pedestrian-Verse

Scotland’s modern emo band Frightened Rabbit continue to ramp up in anticipation of their next record Pedestrian Verse (February 2013).

After the record comes out, they’ll travel to North America for a series of shows.  The closest to me in Victoria would be Seattle on March 8th at Showbox.  I’ve always wanted to see FR, maybe an adventure is in order.

Today’s communication form the band pointed me in the direction for a new music video for the song “The Woodpile.”

Scott from the band says, “The video was shot in Queens, New York on what was pretty much our only day off on that tour. As it was preceded by a tremendous night in NY, there was just a touch of concealer used that day, though I like to think that ‘dishevelled tired guy’ has become my signature look. There is a bunch of our pals in the video from such illustrious bands as Oxford Collapse, Right On Dynamite, Bad Veins, Little Kicks and Olympic Swimmers.”

Archers

Middle class bad boys and Victoria’s favourite mandolin playing folksters The Archers are getting to work on their next record.  And they have a Indiegogo!

They are hoping to raise $7,000…whatever you can do would be super duper.

What can we expect?

and more videos starring Jon Williams?  Dare to dream is what I always say.

Man, I wish I wasn’t so broke… the guitar lessons package, or the house concert package would both be huge.

Go with yourself. I’d say buy a coupon book, but use the $25 on The Archers.

eliza and the bear
The other day I was broadcasting from the Victoria clothing store HTO.  They had a sweet bear hat that I was compelled to buy.

Now a band with “bear” in the title?  Tell me more.

Eliza and the Bear from London will be releasing their single “Upon The North” on February 25th.  It’ll be backed with “The Southern Wild.” (Oh I see what you’re doing here)

KickKickSnare says, “This latest release is merely the formal crescendo of a musical collective of four now peaking into their success.”

Sounds like he’s singing about holidays as a boy on adventure somewhere natural… but also maybe more like a metaphor for being a moody teenager or kid.  Maybe wanting to go somewhere natural.

Its a jaunty tune.  Big repetitive chorus.  Dig it.

You might also enjoy the song “Brother’s Boat.”

Go with yourself.  Maybe buy a coupon book.

TOURIST-YOUR-GIRL-LOUIE-LOUIE-REMIX-397x311

Monday morning after…. we’ll start the day with a remix that came down the pipe from Louie Louie.  He put a nice finish and chilled-out touch on Tourist’s “Your Girl.”

So pretty.

Shovels and Rope Cover 0712

Give you one more band to check out from Paste’s Top 20 New Bands that have a similar flavour to First Aid Kit.  Also compared to The Civil Wars.

Husband and wife team, Shovels & Rope.  Talking on Paste, Michael Hearst talks about working with his wife.

“It was such an efficient way for us to travel (…) We are relatively newlywed. It didn’t seem like a good idea for us to tour as hard as it would require and be apart all the time. We sound good together and like to do this. At the expense of our ego projects, abandoning that and putting all of our efforts together seemed like the better choice. We love playing music together, otherwise we wouldn’t really waste our time.”
