I
got an email the other day alerting me to a KCRW 4 songs you should listen to right now blog post.  The group they were highlighting is called Gold Spectacles.  The London band is still pretty new, just 300 “likes” on Facebook but some positive hype translating to some spins on soundcloud for their song “Steal You Away.”  I think KCRW called it baroque-pop?  Groovy beat…I could get into this song if I were on a mission.

London is a big place, so it stands to reason we’d hear from another group form the Capital.  New Arcades so a synth dream wave.  I kinda hear some Hot Fuss era Killers on this song “Don’t Let Go.” They say, “Think of blue skies, urban nightlife and hazy sunrises…”

Finally a band from Leeds aping the style of Vampire Weekend.  The group is called Marsicans.  This song is right good fun.

Vancouver

Listening to The Zone in Victoria, here a few things that caught my ear.

Jon Williams could just tell you the weather….but then you, you wouldn’t believe it.  So out come the 808s and he raps it!  Unbelievable? You don’t know nothing!

This one is older, but I like it… if Pol Plastino were the Prime Minister, he’d take all your advice seriously.

Every morning you listen to Dylan vs The World… and there is a theme song.  This is one of them, from the Zone’s production team and Zach Parkscott.

foster-the-people-supermodel-2014-1200x1200
Foster the People are ramping up on the media circuit, generating the buzz to sell their new record Supermodel (March 14, Columbia Records).

They just got back from London, where they made it on Zane Lowe’s BBC 1 show.  The band covered the Calvin Harris EDM banger, “Under Control.”  Back in LA, I had the opportunity to interview Mark and I asked him why the band chooses the cover songs they do.

He said the BBC has a list of songs that they have A-listed.  Mark looked at the list, saw Calvin Harris and in a couple hours, figured out the jam.

The original is a real thumper, but Foster the People break it down to its some melody, then put their Foster the People shine on it.

I’ll try to get some more of my interview with Mark Foster on the blog next week… including stories about his world travels that inspired the making of Supermodel, why he called the record Supermodel, and one most excellent bear story.

stuck in my teeth
Vagrant Records‘ latest signing is an English group from Liverpool called Circa Waves. Circa Waves?  I know those guys… Jon Williams featured them on Tea Time recently…and I think I remember jiving on their bratty rock and roll.

BBC 1’s Zane Lowe fired this song up as his “hottest record in the world!” And the world is a pretty big place so you best listen good.

Victoria’s Mindil Beach Markets stopped by the radio factory for a liver performance of their song “Love Like Mine.”  The times were glorious.  Turn it up!

If you’re living on Paradise Island, chekc out their show at Sugar Nightclub on Friday, February 14th.  The show features Towers and Trees!

Bear Mountain cover
Bear Mountain are the Vancouver based synth pop band named after a neighbourhood/golf course in Victoria.

Last year at Rifflandia, my face melted when I stumbled into the Bear Mountain after party at Studio CMCT.  The set was sweaty, poppy, and fun.  They busted into a cover of Tears For Fears that had the whole room singing along.  They have now recorded the cut and posted it on soundcloud.

God damn they’re cool.

We’ve been enjoying the other pride of Wasilla, Alaska, Portugal, The Man on the Zone.  The current single is “Purple Yellow Red and Blue.”  Trolling the US modern rock charts the other day, I saw that “Modern Jesus” is getting a few spins.  Well, we better punch that up.

I like that. Bounces along nicely.

Check out this remix from Charli XCX.

Alan Cross posted a pretty great article about Punk Rock in 1996.  Maximum Propagandhi! He also talk about Indie Pop, is that even a thing?

Lastly… I did notice that Sir Sly is getting some radio love with their song “Gold.”  I have always dug these guys.  They remind me a bit of The Neighbourhood.

The Hype behind these guys has been building for awhile… check out this “next big thing” article form over a year ago!  Part of me thinks I have posted this article before, deje vu.

AC was wondering if “indie pop was a real genre, well check out their label Neon Gold says,  “a monochromatic blend of vigilante pop.” Vigilante pop?

Pitch.com had a chance to interview the guys a couple weeks ago.  It’s worth a read.  Writer Natalie Gallagher asks lead singer Landon jacobs about the song “Gold.”

“Really, that song … it’s funny because we wrote that song, and I was over at dinner at Hayden’s apartment, and he was like, “Oh, you have to hear this new artist that’s coming out. You have to hear this song. It’s called ‘Royals’ by this girl named Lorde.” And I heard it and went, “Hey, lyrically, that’s the same thing that we’re doing in ‘Gold,'” and so it’s kind of a funny coincidence.

Obviously, that song is the most massively famous song of 2013, but it has some of those same internal-monologue questions that we ask in our music. Like: “What is success? What do I want out of life? out of music?” All those kinds of things. “How do we define success?” And then, “What is my dream?” It’s a little bit sarcastic, that line specifically. The rest of the song is kind of a sincere search into the things around that theme.”

It’s time to go, but before I do… let’s keep on the Neon Gold train with London’s CHPLN.  Song is called “White Snow.”

the write up from Neon Gold: “Meet CHPLN, two new chaps out of South London. Their debut single, “White Snow”, floats in quietly and settles on you like the first flakes of winter, calm and composed as the track springs to life over sinfully smooth harmonies and frosty nocturnal transmissions. With shades of Metronomy and Hot Chip swirling together in and amongst the classic aura of Jungle, it’s the perfect soundtrack to a brisk walk home after a wildly introspective night on the town.”

That is super cool.

meet the foetus
Lots to listen to today. Lets go!

We begins with a heads up from Vancityrockgirl…. new Brody Dalle solo stuff.

Brody Dalle’s first taste of solo stuff after a break to be a Mom.  The song has a driving, churning, buzz saw guitar thing going on.  Beautiful vocals that get some help from Garbage’s Shirley Manson and Emily Kokal.

Being a parent, love the lyrics.

neck deep
I was trolling on Caroline’s website… and saw the above promo pick for a pop-punk band out of Wales (but man, don’t they sound like every American band circa 2005?).  The group is called Neck Deep.  Anyway, good hockey shirt, I clicked play.

I couldn’t find a decent stream of anything new, but they have some Youtubes.

***

Also outta the UK… a band Jon Williams is bullish on… Royal Blood!  saw they had a spin on the mighty KROQ! Neat.

****

Garage punk?  You know I love it!

Together PANGEA is the band… new record is called Badillac.

Watch the NSFW music video! Well, I guess it depends where you work, I’m at a radio station…

Bastille, so hot right now. New song is the title cut off their record Bad Blood, and its screaming up the charts in Amurika and here in Canada.

Augustines are cool.  I loved, LOVED, their song “Headlong into the Abyss.”  Now we got some new stuff….  the record, simply titled Augustines, came out last Tuesday.  We’ll send this one out to my girl Justine in Australia for reminding me Augustines are BACK!

I think that’s all I got… we’ll see how the day shapes up.  There is a lot of music out there and they all want you to hear it!

Go with yourself.

current swell
I punched onto Facebook to see if anyone knew where I could have a beach fire near town… and I’m glad I did because Current Swell just posted their first new song off their upcoming record.  The song is called “Rollin’.”

First listen… already love it.

Ferris quote
Woke up this morning at a weird hour.  I had a hard time sleeping.  Maybe too much anxiety?  I was supposed to go camping this weekend, but that fell apart…which is for the best.  I underestimated or did not fully appreciate the amount of work a newborn would be…which is funny, because its my second.

On top of that, Boitano has been away with his second and this past week has felt like a blur.  Camping would have been nice, but being away would be a challenge.  I do need that biophelia so a day hike with the family would be good.

I got a call from Ditch Records last night…. Haim’s record Days Are Gone is back in stock, so we’ll take the trip downtown this weekend to pick it up.  Here’s a remix of the new single “Forever.”

Have a good weekend.
