I am obsessed with Philly punker Beach Slang‘s cover of Dramarama’s “Anything Anything.”

Beach Slang are prepping their debut Things We Do To Find People Who Feel Like Us for Polyvinyl.

To help get us amped for that October 30th record, the band created a covers mixtape for Cassette Store Day on October 17th. Here is one of the songs from that ep, a cover of Dramarama’s 80s alternative anthem “Anything Anything.”

Lead singer James Alex talks about the project.

I’ve always been sort of clumsy. Mostly, meaning socially. That’s tricky business when you’ve got a big, gooey heart. But, yeah, when I can’t quite figure out how to say a thing to someone, I make tapes for them. I need them to know how much I mean it, you know? That’s what this is: me letting you know how much I mean it. Every drunk sing along, every sweaty hug, every shirt you wear, record you grab, letter you write, thing you say…it’s a really wild heart-sweller. Thank you for all of it.

For Volume I, I landed here. I mean, lots of songs mean something to me. These six mean a whole lot. I hope they will to you. If you already know them, play them loud and remember it all. If you don’t, I hope they feel like something you’ve been waiting for.

Some people tell me I overly romanticize rock & roll. That I have too much of a dreamer head. I’ve never apologized for that. Nah, not even once.

Right on,
James Alex

This song is on repeat. I will HAVE to be at this show.

11/10 – The Cobalt – Vancouver, BC

Other Pacific Northwest shows.
11/9 – The Vera Project – Seattle, WA
11/11 – Analog Cafe – Portland, OR

I really should have written a blog yesterday. So much new music to get to.

Let us begin in Philadelphia and a record I will for sure be picking up on October 30th. Beach Slang‘s The Things We Do To Find People Who Feel Like Us. Compact disc, digital, and cassette (so hot right now) but the jewel in the crown will be one of those 800 press vinyl from the Polyvinyl store.

NOISEY“…packs in their trademark hopeless romanticism and a lust for nostalgia over emotional vulnerability.”
Grand Stand: “The feelings of youth and vulnerability lie at the core of Beach Slang‘s music, which is part punk, part pop and all catharsis. It references the ghosts of the Replacements but keeps one foot firmly rooted in the present. It’s fun and it’s serious. It’s sad but it isn’t.”

I love it.

Silversun Pickups from Silverlake, California (or is it Silver Lake?) have a new record called Better Nature out on September 25th.

Check out this short-film for the single “Nightlight.” The film was directed by Mike Pellington…Mike Pellington, you mean the same guy that directed Pearl Jam’s “Jeremy?” Yeah THAT Mike Pellington. You’re watching Meg Steedle who might recognize if you watched Boardwalk Empire.

I just posted some Four Tet the other day…and now this? A recently re-discovered Four Tet song posted up on Soundcloud.

Let’s have a listen to “BACK2THESTART.”

Free download? This song will be making the lounge set. 100%.

What else… right… a remix of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car.” I *feel* like I’ve heard this song, or a remix like it before? No matter…. Classic song, sounds good. Also a free download.

Tomorrow I should have a remix of Tove Lo’s “Bodies.” and working on interviews with Mumford & Sons, Royal Blood and Atlas Genius.

Go with yourself.

I was listening to a bunch of old Braid and American Football songs over the weekend. While building the playlist, iTunes said, “people who bought this, also bought this: Beach Slang.”

I downloaded a few songs and I’m glad I did. The Philadelphia punk band has a couple eps out already and plans to record this summer for Polyvinyl. That band is currently touring the US with Cursive. BukowskiBastards interviewed James Alex to get the plan for a new record, “Yeah, I have the entire record written and home-demoed. I just need to get the Slangs in a room and make them loud. The plan is to record in July for an October/November release. We’ve been playing a couple new songs on the Cursive tour and kids have been super enthusiastic which, you know, means everything.”

My favourite song is called “American Girls and French Kisses”

Beach Slang lead singer James Alex (Snyder) isn’t new to the game. He fronted 90’s Philly alter-rockers Weston. Pitchfork draws some parallels between the two projects.
