Back in September, Brian Fallon of Gaslight Anthem fame released a side-project record as The Horrible Crowes.  At the time, we spun the feature song a bit on the Zone and I remember Dave Sawchuk being a bit of an early convert on the project.

It never really jelled on the Zone, song went away to be replaced by the next “it” thing in modern rock and I didn’t think too much about it.  Till about a week ago.

Talking with my sister-in-law Alyx… she was telling me that she LOVES the Horrible Crowes Elsie.  “OK, I’ll give it another listen,” I says to her.

A day or two after that… outta the blue!  Homeboy Tyson sends me a text saying… check out the Horrible Crowes.  Great sad bastard music.

He was right.  Great sad bastard music… and the launch point for today’s mixtape.

Mixcloud: Mixtape >> Sad Bastard Music

Using the Horrible Crowes’ dark sad sack tale of woe as a jumping point… I went on Facebook and twitter to ask best friends for their sad bastard songs to add.  here we go.  Strap in, its about to get sad.

Reading about the Horrible Crowes I was excited to discover they will be releasing “Lady Killer” as a 7 inch single in February.  B-Side…. their cover of Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream.”  Wow.

Check this out… there is a girl on my facebook named Sundine Forsberg.  That’s her real name, not some hockey obsessed pseudo-name.  Crazy right?

She dropped an interesting MP3 down on my wall the other day.

Its a Dubstepped out version of Sublime’s “Santeria.”

I played this song to Jade and the first thing she said is, “hey, it has the dubstep sound.”  Ain’t that a pip?  The dubstep has a sound that every dubstep song uses.  That’s too bad for that sub-genre.  But to get geekier style, isn’t this song really Brostep?  Which is basically accessible dubstep?  And nothing is more “bro” than Sublime, period.

Sublime – “Santeria” (JPOD Remix)

In other news and a little world away… I got an MP3 from Vancouver.  A band called Southern Death Threat.

As the name already suggests, its hard rock.  Not normally my style but I have found myself jamming this cut out a bit from time-to-time at work.  At first, I punched it up out of morbid curiosity, but then, I dunno, it rooted in my brain.

Southern Death Threat – “Truth”

Sometimes I just like a more simpler heavy sound.  Takes me back to being 19.  Judge me not!  But if you want something to judge

Lastly, WTF is going on in the world?

Watch This! >> Katy Perry – “E.T.”

Reason #436 we’re all doomed:

“Tell me what’s next/Alien sex/  Imma disrobe you/then Imma gunna probe you.”

No wait, I love that line!  If that is a sign of the end times in music, sign me up.

DJ Notes

The first couple tracks Coral and I like because they sample or feature some fine classics. Madcon has some Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons going on, and Kristina jams out the Dave Clark Five.  Nice.  Just the other day I was thinking that DC5 would make the base for a fine modern dance song.  I guess I was not the only person to think it.

Phoenix is so hot right now.  The hipsters like it, The Zone is jamming it and the record is a gorgeous spin.

I heard a fairly in depth interview with Katy Perry on Sirius Hits 1 on our drive home from Sasquatch that made me like this chick a little bit more.

Coral loves Bat for Lashes and trolling the internets the otherday I found some remixes of her fave BFL track.  The EP also had a cover of the Cure’s “A Forest” which would be worth your time if you’re a fan.
