Happy Friday!

Tracked down a lobster roll in Vancouver. It was good…but I saw a bunch of their chowders come out in the bread bowls. Yeah, I’ll have to go back. With my daughter Madelyn!

snakehips

LA producer Gryffin rarely misses the mark with his remixes, and his new official remix of Snakehips & Mo jammer “Don’t Leave” is no exception.

the PR describes it: For his “Don’t Leave” remix, the dance wizard structures a powerful yet dynamic arrangement around MØ’s impassioned verses to amplify the raw emotion in her voice before introducing a reimagined drop of clamoring tech-inspired synths and pumping bass.

Finally hung the punching bag up in the garage of my parents place. I’ve dragging my daughter down to the “Coquitlam Fight Club” to smash out a few on the heavy.

My training for Beer Wars 2 has been delayed. I went on a little holiday for week one, then been sick the past couple. But feeling better and getting excited to throw some punches.

callme-grant

Direct from Ruth in Minnesota… she sent over Grant‘s remix of San Holo’s red hot jammer “Lights.”

Grant says this about the art of the remix: “I don’t believe remixes are meant to be seen as better or worse than each other, or the original. I really think remixes are just one artist’s interpretation of another artist’s piece of work. For me this felt just like writing an original piece of music, but with an already amazing vocal and hook melody. Creating a song means pouring a bit of yourself into a shareable entity. Interpreting and sharing what the piece of art says to you, well, that’s a remix.

This is my first remix in years, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Huge thank you to bitbird and SAN HOLO for letting me re-imagine this beautiful song!

baker-street

Hanging out at Noodle Box for lunch today and I heard the chill remix of Queens of the Stone Age.

My shazam was no use, but a quick search found this remix from Virgin Magnetic Material.

That’s my best guess for what I heard. The restaurant was loud and the music just quiet enough that shazam couldn’t cut through. Shazam also often fails me with remixes….

Koni
Sebastian Dittrich is a German producer under the brand Koni. He took a cover of Coldplay’s “Adventure of a Lifetime” by a singer named Gabriella, and turned it into a bouncy cloud house song (like the sound Gryffin says music blog Yaqui.co). Sounds pretty great.

I’ll have to take advantage of this cover for a DJ set.

Oh sweet…then I hit Gryffin’s feed and he has a song featuring Josef Salvat! Love it. Happy Friday.

Here’s your nature moment of Zen…I went for a hike to Jug Island Beach on Monday in Belcarra…and along the trail I found this rock with water bouncing down it.

zee

Zee is a South Korean producer based out of Seoul. Travelled back in time to 2011 to dust off this Foster The People modern rock radio staple.

Searching for a Whitney Houston remix of “How Will I Know” for a wedding I am DJing. This wasn’t what the bride wanted…but I dug it. We Win Gracie remix.

The bride was looking for “How Will I Know” (Pursuit of Happiness remix)…my google-fu must be weak, I can’t find it. Do you know what she is talking about? Leave me a comment below please and thank you.

Happy Victoria Day to all you Canadian blog readers!

Kanye

Joel Almand is Almond. If you hit his website, the man from Buffalo, New York seems to like the stages set up in sunny places. I can dig it.

He sent over his spin on The Chainsmokers second original, Kanye. You’ll remember their first, the Top 40 radio infection “#SELFIE.” That song sounded like a Las Vegas style fist pumper with the cross-fit hammer heavy 2013 lyrical theme. I’d be lying if I said I haven’t dropped it more than once into my set. Now a song called “Kanye?” For real.

The guys in The Chainsmokers created a very uplifting power party rocker using Kanye as a metaphor for “not giving a fuck.”

From The Chainsmokers’ soundcloud: “This is real, this isn’t about love or partying or carpe diem shit, the same way we always hear it, this is some real life every day real world way to convey an important message…

As Kanye said, ‘ I refuse to accept other people’s ideas of happiness for me. As if there’s a ‘one size fits all’ standard for happiness.'”

Enter the Almond.

Almond brightens up the original and keeps the focus on a pounding party rocking house beat. It doesn’t genre hop like the original. All the same, the original nut of the song remains and that strong vocal hook.
