MML

Today I got a Victoria band for you to check out called Man Made Lake.

There aren’t too many of those around here, but man, head to Alberta, they got more than two.

They sing a more mature, bluesy, brooding rock and roll.  There were a couple interesting songs on Murky Waters for sure and they sing about Bourbon!!

One that really caught my attention was earlier on the record, “Freeway.”

The song starts as a Bruce Springsteen-esque melodrama and it caught my attention.  While I continued plucking away at my office work, my ear went back to the record and I thought it had changed songs.  The song develops into something different than the beginning.  It required a repeat play for sure.

The Zone Band of the Month, Towers and Trees came on the radio today to perform a couple quality songs.

The first they performed was their local hit, “Montreal.”  I had to ask Adrian (the lead singer) if the song was auto-biographical or fantasy.  He said it was fantasy, but some of the thoughts (he won’t say which) later became facts after a recent trip to Quebec.  Atta boy.

They they performed the first song off their record, Broken Record.  The song is called “We’re Not island” and Adrian says its about love.  d’aww.

Look for Towers and Trees at VicFest this June.

Rolla

An email from my homeboy Matt let me know that Rolla Olak will be opening for Vince Vaccaro on March 15th at Sugar Nightclub.

Zoners of a certain vintage year will remember a band of the month called Grace Nocturnal.  Then he joined Boy, a Canadian indie band of the mid-2000s.  They had a couple modern rock radio hits including this 2004 jam, “Up In This Town.”

These days, Rolla (who I believe is based out of Vancouver?) is doing a solo thing.  I’ve been listening to  his latest record Western Heart today and really feeling the song “Rainy Day.”  What a perfect sad, raining day song to dream about your crush to (or dwell on a love that went south?).

INVADERS FROM THE MAINLAND! Saturday night at Talk’s Cheap on Pandora…. check out a couple quality bands from Vancouver.

Falling Archer sent an email to let me know that both these Vancouver bands are worth your time…

Let’s start with Juvenile Hall.  Falling Archer says “they have kind of a Bikini Kill sound.”

and Falling Archer says of The New Values  “their album shreds! total old school so-cal punk vibe.”  They have a song about Don McKellar… and that’s neat enough to get a feature.

You’ll find all things punk rock on The Zone during The Punk Show with Jason Lamb.

BonehoofI don’t know what I think about Bonehoof‘s cover art.  I think I kind of like it!

The Victoria bluesy folk rockers but out an ep on February 9th. Benji dropped off a copy for me at The Veneto Lounge and I’ve had it in the Purple Mini-Van since.

Sad rock and roll…the best kind (sometimes).

Bonehoof have a show at Lucky Bar on March 13th.

Victoria’s Mindil Beach Markets‘ put out a record on March 5th called It Might Take Long.  To get us amped, they tapped Innovate Imageworks to craft a music video.  Frantic, I think there are ghosts in there, the times are good.

The song is “Smoking Gun.”

AcresOfLions_BrightLights_SingleCover_sm
Victoria, BC’s Acres of Lions spent much of 2012 on the road.  It seemed like they played almost every city, town, village and trading post in British Columbia.  They went East and they went further East to England.  Finally, when the last tour t-shirt was sold and and end was insight, they holed up in a HoJo in Toronto (with a POOL!) and buried themselves in a studio to record.

The new record will be called Home(s). The ‘s’ in the parentheses maybe speaks to the nomadic life of these guys.  They have homes where they’re from, homes where they live now (kinda… Victoria) and then all the friends they have on the warpath across Canada and now in England.

Our first feature cut off the album is called “Bright Light.” The song has singer Jeff Kalesnikoff reflecting on his youth that launches into an anthemic chorus.  As the title implies, musically the song is very bright and propulsive.

Buy the single on iTunes TODAY!

Acres will be celebrating their album release with us here in Victoria on Friday, March 29th at Lucky Bar.  Industry friends can look for them at CMW in Toronto! The rest of Canada can find your city on this LIST.

Go with yourself.
