Beach Slang

I love when sometime in the past I order a record…forget about it, then it arrives!

Last night I came home after a long day of work to a package from Polyvinyl. They finally sent me Quiet Slang’s We Were Babies & We Were Dirtbags ep. The 7-inch has two Beach Slang songs broken down and then two covers.

James Alex talks about the project, “most of the time, I’m caught in a tug-of-war between the gutter and the light, fighting to figure out where I fall. Look, all the best stuff is part-cracked and part-patched. The best humans are made the same. And that’s all this is-a love letter to all my friends who thought they were meant to die young. See?-we made it.”

I love the two covers. The Replacements “Androgynous” and Big Star’s “Thirteen.”

the two Beach Slang songs are glorious as well. Piano, cello… amazing.

ugh… and it is so pretty.

  • Norman Brannon (Texas Is the Reason / New End Original / Shelter)
  • Chris Carrabba (Dashboard Confessional / Further Seems Forever / Twin Forks / Vacant Andys)
  • Mike Kinsella (American Football / Owen / Cap’n Jazz / Joan of Arc / Owls / The One Up Downstairs / Their/They’re/Their)

snugs
Snugs looks pretty new to the scene. No real bio or anything to check out. All the social media links look recently set up. So we’ll hit play and see if we like it.

Let’s check out the song “Radio Silence.”

***UPDATE***

I DID get some press about Snugs. Silly me.

A conceptual music project that is just as much an ethos and story as a DJ/producer duo. Spearheaded by a lovable but mischievous character, Snugs encapsulates everything related to comfort, creativity and the bedroom.

And the “story” for the song is on the soundcloud link.

She tapped her finger nervously on the side of the illuminated screen. Her words in a wall of blue text screaming back at her. She shifted uncomfortably in her bed not able to find a comfortable position. It had been exactly seven hours since his last response. In her desperation she cries out for comfort with all her might…

In that moment Snugs was listening. An omniscient and benevolent being, he rushes to action and appears at the foot of her bed.

“Who are you?” the girl asked.

“Hello there. I am snugs. I heard your cry for help.”

“Did he send you?”

“No.”

“Can you make him respond to me?”

“No.”

“Well then what good are you to me?”

“I cannot make your problems disappear, but I can be here through times of need. We all get frustrated sometimes when it feels like we are being ignored. Sometimes the best things to do is just to let it allllll go. Our lives and happiness are not dependent on other people. We create our own comfort. Now grab a blanket, throw a pillow, get up on your bed and dance!”

And this Coldplay chill remix popped up and I want to share it.

no liars

Victoria punk No Liars will release their first full-length album in early 2018. The record will be called The Cause & The Cure. The album was recorded by Jesse Gander of Rain City Recorders (Japandroids, White Lung,) and mastered by Joao Carvalho (Alexisonfire, Arkells, Silverstein, Protest the Hero). OK, resumes check out….lets have a listen.

Noah Edwards talks about the music video;  “‘Animal’ is about struggling with inner turmoil and recognizing the darkest parts of ourselves.  We wanted the video to portray the terror of losing touch with reality when facing one’s inner demons.”

Long weekend was fun times!

My daughter spent her time out in Langley with Nana… that left Coral and I with the boys. Saturday we did a tourist day downtown.

On Sunday, me and Madelyn went for a walk in the POURING rain at Campbell Valley Park. Real nice park…would go for a easy hike around there again for sure.

Monday night… Nana came to watch the kids so Coral and I could go out. Checked out some stand up comedy at the Starlight Casino with Alex Carr and Meredith.

Propagandhi performed in Vancouver last night. My man Jared was able to source a last minute ticket to the old out show at the Rickshaw theatre for me. Incredible!

Last time they were in town…I drank too much, then went too har din the pit which was a bad scene for this old Dadbod.

This time I was lame and hung out on the balcony and didn’t drink…but you know what? LOVED the show and I am able to function on a Thursday. Win!

They started this set with Victory Lap standout “Failed Imagineer.”

A band from Olympia opened up called RVIVR. They were real good.

Ought
Holy shit… I totally forgot about Ought. I’m such a dummy.

I used to love those guys (and they soundtracked a couple adventures to Seattle…huh). Now they are on Merge records in the US and Royal Mountain in Canada.

There is just too much music, it hard to keep up with everything all the time.

Ought’s third album is called Room Inside a View.  The record comes out on February 16th. The first single is “These 3 Things.”

Ought out west with a band called The Flasher. I should road trip to see them in Seattle…for old times sake.

03-22 Portland, OR – Mississippi Studios
03-23 Seattle, WA – Chop Suey
03-24 Vancouver, British Columbia – The Cobalt

Go with yourself.
