Sylvan Esso are an indie electronic duo from Durham, North Carolina.

Sylvan Esso will be in Vancouver for a show at the Commodore Ballroom on August 15th.

Amelia Meath called CFOX from the road in Omaha. It was a weird day as I had to bring my kids to work….here’s our conversation complete with a computer freeze scare and the kids interupting.

Amelia talks about Lollapalooza adventures, creating and layering sounds in the studio, bringing those studio sounds to the stage, their new record ‘What Now’ and the songs “Radio” and Die Young.” She then gives a Coles notes on meeting Sylvan Esso creative partner Nick Sanborn…and I think that’s a podcast.

During the extended interview (click the link to hear our entire conversation), I mention an episode of the podcast Song Exploder….if you wanna nerd out on their song “Coffee,” here ye be.

lemon twigs
Another band I’m bring back from my time in LA is a group called The Lemon Twigs. When Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters was talking about some modern rock bands he was excited about, the Lemon Twigs name popped up.

The brothers from Long Island, New York make some great weirdo, outsider rock. The sound feels like it driven through halcyon vintage nostalgia machine.

“Night Song” shows off that weirdo element.

“These Words” bring a bit of that vintage vibe.

I guess I better think about getting a taco or some lunch before the old radio show.

DJing tonight at Match at the Starlight Casino in New Westminster. I think I’ll need to do some work on the setlist tonight. I’ve been really feeling loungy beats… I LOVE breaks from the Led Zeppelin remix I blogged the other day.   And I’ve been into anything I have from WBBL which is not enough.  So much good funk.

I could see people liking this one.

Natalie from the California band Cape Weather sent over their new song “Telephono.”

Cape Weather is Oakland’s Natalie Smith and LA’s Eric Jackowitz. Natalie says, “Telephono hooks you with it’s mysteriously sweet vocals, jangly guitars, and 60s nostalgia.”

I’d buy that. Groovy, loungey, vocal lite rock. Love the warm guitar tones.

slaves

Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters was shouting out some modern rock bands the other day. One of the bands he mentioned was the British rock duo, Slaves.

The punkers from Kent put out an album in 2016 called Take Control. The record has a classic 80’s alt-rock/punk energy.

me and murge

Sunday, I got the last-minute opportunity to MC Brewery and the Beast Vancouver.

The best restaurants in the city grill up some meat and you wander around the grounds eating.

There is beer, wine, cider, non-alcoholic drinks….and then piles of grilled meats on your cedar plank.

While you soak up the sun at False Creek, you’re hearing music from the band Electric Timber Company and DJ Murge.

Murge through down this incredible re-edit of Led Zeppelin’s 1969 II era song “Ramble On.”

Wolf Parade

Vancouver Island band Wolf Parade will release their fourth album, Cry, Cry, Cry on October 6th (Sub Pop).

The band members were scattered around working on other projects after 2010’s Expo 86.

Most the band members eventually found themselves back on Vancouver Island again with Dan Boeckner in Northern California.  I guess the guys felt the time was right to put the band back together.

“Expo was a real rock record. We just sort of banged it out, which was kind of the point.” Cry Cry Cry, on the other hand, is more deliberate in its arrangements and embrace of the studio process. “If a part was going on for too long it would get lopped, you know?” says Dan. “That being said, there are two very long songs on the record and I don’t think it would be a Wolf Parade record if it didn’t have some kind of prog epic.”

The band shared the song “Valley Boy” to get us excited for the October album.

Wolf Parade has some shows coming up!

Jul. 21 – Seattle, WA – Capitol Hill Block Party
Aug. 18-20 – Rock Creek, BC – Ponderosa Music & Arts Festival
Sep. 05 – Quebec City, QC – Videotron Center*
Sep. 06 – Montreal, QC – Bell Centre*
Sep. 09 – Ottawa, ON – Canadian Tire Center*
* with Arcade Fire

unnamed (7)

Toro y Moi released his 6th album on July 7th on Carpark. The record is called Boo Boo.

I was talking with Nicole on Facebook the other day. and she was telling me she has had Washed Out‘s Mister Mellow on repeat. I didn’t even know thew record had come out on June 30th! This maybe shows the value of being on a good label? He was with Sub Pop for his first two records and now Stone’s Throw.

I’ve been enjoying St. Vincent‘s new one, “New York.”
