TheBeaches

The radio hype machine sent down a new song from a group of Toronto high school ladies, The Beaches.

Real catchy and fun…. X in Calgary has these girls on the radio.  Maybe it will fit in on The Zone?

College

Something for the lounge.  Love the new College single “The Energy Story.”  The record, Secret Diary, is out on May 6th.

And from Vancouver production team WMNSTUDIES…. a dainty electro bopper.

I’ll be playlisting both these for the set at the Veneto Lounge.

Holy War
Trolling mighty fine music blog Winnie Cooper today, she had up rock and roll band from Vancouver called Hooves.

Her opening sentence started with “all girl group” and ended with “met at CiTR.”  OK, I’ll click that link and have a listen.

Talking to Dylan at the radio factory this morning about how great Northcote is, the man pointed me in the direction of a new song on his soundcloud.  Wow…. lots of “whoaaaaaa” and a damn fine catchy chorus.

One of my most anticipated Victoria records of the year for sure.  Let’s go, whooooooaaaa!

Hey Canada!  Find a Northcote show near you and go to it.

Brighton, UK soft rockers Cave Painting have made the pilgrimage to SXSW to showcase.  The band has been busy since their 2012 Votive Life.  They’ve managed a tour with Alt-J, got themselves on the radar of the mighty BBC 1, and now a new EP for April called Rio (04/28 Third Rock Records).

appleseed cast
Kansas’ post-rockers Appleseed Cast have a new record out in April.  Their 8th LP will be called Illumination Ritual (o4/23 Graveface).

I love their big, sweeping, proggy style of emo.  Peregrine came out before  the time Coral and I started dating.  She used to listen to these guys and I adopted the band.  I have fond memories of that time and we have that album hanging on the wall of our home.

I woke up today to news of a first taste.  Let’s have a listen to “Great Lake Derelict.”

Huge.  Love this new tune and I’m looking forward to the record in April.

The BIG music story in Canada on a Monday, new City and Colour record this summer.  Dine Alone records doesn’t have much except to say its coming this summer and they shared a first single called “of space and time.”

Dallas Green will be doing festivals this summer….. fingers crossed that means a return to Victoria.

Not bad, not bad.

City and Colour will be part of SXSW going on this week in Austin, Texas.

She-Wants-Revenge-These-Things-428942
Went on a bit of nostalgia trip this weekend at The Veneto Lounge.  Remembered a couple songs we used to play on the Zone back in the mid-2000s.

Trolling the net I found a demo of She Wants Revenge‘s 2005 single “These Things.”

I remember interviewing them back in the day (they were really tired and kinda grumpy… DJ Adam 12 tried to be friendly), but I don’t think I kept the audio, so it probably didn’t happen.

I remember the record well as it was popular on radio in ’05/06.  The band even toured to Victoria.  I hadn’t really thought about the song too much till I was scanning some old MP3s on my laptop and thought, “huh.”

Once I had She Wants Revenge going my mind drifted to another single that had a day on the radio.  Another dark, jangly, modern popper…. Birmingham’s Editors, “Munich.” Also a 2005 jammer.

MML

Today I got a Victoria band for you to check out called Man Made Lake.

There aren’t too many of those around here, but man, head to Alberta, they got more than two.

They sing a more mature, bluesy, brooding rock and roll.  There were a couple interesting songs on Murky Waters for sure and they sing about Bourbon!!

One that really caught my attention was earlier on the record, “Freeway.”

The song starts as a Bruce Springsteen-esque melodrama and it caught my attention.  While I continued plucking away at my office work, my ear went back to the record and I thought it had changed songs.  The song develops into something different than the beginning.  It required a repeat play for sure.

Zolas
Vancouver pop due The Zolas have created a music video for the song  “Escape Artist” off the 2012 album Ancient Mars.  Their album which we’ll find on Light Organ Records, is a pretty solid listen.  “Escape Artist” is a stand out.

Zach Gray talks to NPR about the song: “I was writing about the feeling of having a more vivid version of yourself suppressed inside you. There’s a version of us that says ‘yes’ to everything and seeks out little adventures and has a healthy disregard for dumb rules, and every time that person gets close to the skin, the other part of us goes “Whoa, whoa. Can’t we just chill out tonight?”

The music video is an interesting drama that unfolds over the quick 2:48 of the song.  The lyrics of the song are interpreted in a way that maybe is not fully apparent at first, the but the song fits the narrative so perfectly.

OK, The Zolas didn’t make Spin’s 40 MUST SEE artists to check out at this year’s SXSW, but they would be on my top 40!

I asked Zach about the title of the record Ancient Mars.  Great name right?  And he referred me to YouThink Magazine: “I think Ancient Mars is a bit of a nerdy metaphor that I’ve always liked. We’re getting all of these pictures from the Mars Curiosity rover, and so scientists have been saying that there was a good chance there was water or vegetation at some point. Now we’re getting photographs of rounded pebbles that look like they’ve been in a riverbed on Mars. It’s interesting to think that Mars had its hay day, but two billion years later there’s next to no evidence of any of that ever happening; there was life, there was water, there were canyons, and now there’s nothing. It kind of reminds me of the quick intentional relationships we have when we’re young. At some point that person was the most exciting, most optimistic part of your life, and then you switch schools, or move away or maybe they just drift apart. Then two years later you run into that friend, ex-girlfriend or ex-boyfriend at that store somewhere and it’s just barren – there’s nothing there between you. In my mind, Ancient Mars is that beautiful place you can’t go back to once you’ve left.”
