beyond wilderness

Originally from Victoria and operating as The Raccoons, then briefly Jakarta… now they live in Vancouver (I think), are signed at Arts & Crafts, and call themselves Gold & Youth.

Record will be out May 14th called Beyond Wilderness. And if you’re way cooler than me, you’ll bro down with these guys during SXSW.  Say hi to Matt and Jeff from me!

Baths
My chillwave man Baths is back with new music.  The follow up to 2010’s Cerulean will be called Obsidian.  Look for it on May 28th on Anticon.

Wait a minute… Cerulean, like Cerulean Storm?  Obsidian like Obsidian Oracle?

Did Will Wisenfeld read Dark Sun novels?

Here’s the first taste, “Miasmas Sky.”

Baths will be touring with The Postal Service, but I don’t see him on the Vancouver date.

Great news today that took me on a nostalgia trip… R.E.M.’s Warner Bros. debut Green will be getting a reissue.  The 1988 record will be a deluxed CD that includes some art and live recordings. There will also be a vinyl package that recreates the original 1988 art.

Details!

I know that Green doesn’t always get the love in the pantheon on amazing R.E.M. records…but to me personally, it will always be a favourite.  For some reason, this record was the R.E.M. album I would jam almost every night before bed in high school (well this and Alice In Chains).  Before falling asleep, I’d read and have my discman blasting.   I’d just listen to albums front-to-back-to-front over and over till I fell asleep.  I’d wake up with the headphone cord wrapped all over the place.

I think one of my earliest concious memories of R.E.M. is being 10-years-old and watching the Fox sitcom Get a Life featuring… “Stand

TheColourist - Single Art
Coachella will be expanding minds in the California desert come April.  Maybe you’re going?  Must be nice.  If the festival isn’t literally blocks from my apartment and I can’t bring my kid, I don’t go.

I got an email today from a band out of Orange County (is that a town or a region?) that will be playing the festival.  They are called The Colourist.

Right away, I appreciate the proper spelling of colour.  I love the vocal from drummer Maya Tuttle tucked back there in the mix.  Their first single was “Wishing Wells” and now we get “Little Games.”

My favourite thing about festivals is exploring and experiencing new surprise bands.  I was THIS close to working out a trip to California this year.  I can just tell that if I was drinking that fine watered down American beer in a giant can (you know, if you made stronger beer, you could use smaller cans), and it was 30 degrees in the afternoon…I’d be so down with The Colourist.

This talk reminds me I was working on a Sasquatch 2013 Playlist for my mixcloud!  Coming soon friends. (probably next week)

Also… maybe take a minute to check out my interview with K-Os.

matinee

I think we say Vancouver band The Matinee… but they’re Coquitlam guys to me.  The Matinee put out a record last week called We Swore We’d See The Sunrise.

Their tour has this alt-country-ish sounding band crossing Canada.  They are in Victoria on Friday, March 8th at Club 9one9.

They will also be part of the Squamish Music Festival in August!

Let’s have a listen to the first single “Young and Lazy.”

Amazing heads up from my radio friend Madeline over at CBC Victoria.  She shared this link from a design blog that posted about a flower arrangement inspired by Band of Horses most excellent 2006 record Everything All The Time.

READ Author SarahB’s Sound Garden: Everything All The Time

Living in the Garden City, many of us dabble in the world of making things grow.  How wonderful would it be to theme that patio jungle after a favourite band, album, or song.

SarahB created an arrangement based on a favourite record of both myself and my wife Coral.  We love this album and have been fortunate enough to see Band of Horses in concert a few times.

The arrangement is base don the ancient looking forest depicted on the cover.  The seen reminds me a lot of what we’d discover trekking through the bush on our Island.

The blog post takes you through a step-by-step process of playing with the colour green, ferns, mosses, and flowers.

What a fun project inspired by and amazing album.  Though Band of Horses might not be your pick… I am sure you have an album or band that could shape your garden and personal space.

drive
The movie Drive has a pretty solid soundtrack.  The producers have decided to put it out on vinyl and took the time to design a quality looking cover and package.

Pitchfork says that the post art is done by the “legendary” Tyler Stout.  If you’re a fan of the movie, the soundtrack, or cartoon Ryan Gosling, you can order the record on March 22nd from Mondo.

Decades
Let’s have a listen to Toronto’s Decades.  Dark, reverby, fuzzy, melodramatic (their word) pop.  Reminds me so much of Vancouver’s Elizabeth.

You might also get down to the track “Tonight Again.”

botm-Towers_and_Trees-02

The Zone Band of the Month, Towers and Trees came on the radio today to perform a couple quality songs.

The first they performed was their local hit, “Montreal.”  I had to ask Adrian (the lead singer) if the song was auto-biographical or fantasy.  He said it was fantasy, but some of the thoughts (he won’t say which) later became facts after a recent trip to Quebec.  Atta boy.

They they performed the first song off their record, Broken Record.  The song is called “We’re Not island” and Adrian says its about love.  d’aww.

Look for Towers and Trees at VicFest this June.

CERN just collided two of my wife’s favourites.  Fun covering Ellie Goulding‘s “Anything Could Happen.”

Recoded by the BBC because that what’s they do… get bands to lay down a cover.  And bless them for that.  When I ask bands to play a cover on my radio show they say, “uh no.”
