This remix ain’t new, but it’s new to me….

From their soundcloud: “White Sea remixes Young Blood by The Naked And Famous. The single is taken from the NZ group’s debut album Passive Me Aggressive You. In the hands of White Sea (aka Morgan Kibby, also a sometimes member of M83) Young Blood is transformed into a truly ethereal journey into the soul of the song, venturing into a few dark corners along the way.”

I can’t believe I’ve been sitting on this great cover of Awolnation’s “Sail” for so long.

Back in 2011… my man Josh at Veneto turned me on to Geoff Lundstrom.  He was doing a groovy thing down at Canoe on Thursdays (does he still?).  Lots of covers…and one standout is his take on “Sail.”

Fast-forward to today and I am organizing the cover songs we have on our playlist at the radio factory.  I get thinking some local bands with covers… Maurice’s “Robin,” Jon & Roy tackling Ledbelly, Acres of Lion’s jamming “Never Surrender”…. and “Sail.”

Jimmy Eat World 'My Best Theory'

The BIG new this morning on The Morning Zone… Dylan and Jason announced the details for this summer’s Rock The Shores.

Two Days in July… July 13th and 14th at the Juan de Fuca Rec Center’s lower fields.  So many bands to get excited about.

I want to start by getting amped on Jimmy Eat World coming to Victoria.

I’ve been lucky enough to see the band a few time sin concert and love them.  Coral is the bigger fan and has all their records at home.  Many of them she can sing along to, word-for-word.

Jimmy Eat World have seven records and all of them are outstanding.  Some of the earlier ones maybe lack the syrupy production and mass appeal pop songs of the later records. Still, all interesting and great listens.

JEW’s lat album was 2010’s Invented. Last fall the band began work on their eighth record, Damage (might be the name of the single, its unclear to me).  Our first listen will happen near Record Store Day in April when they release it as a 7-inch single, backed with a cover of Pablo Honey-era Radiohead, “Stop Whispering.”

A very pretty cover song for you today.  The song “Fly Me To The Moon.”  The American Standard from 1954 is maybe most famously sung by Frank Sinatra…. but in 1965, it was included on Brazilian Bossa Nova singer Astrud Gilberto‘s The Shadow of You Smile.

Bouncing around the net today is a version that covers Astrud’s take by a band out of Portland called Radiation City.

Phoenix is massive. Dinosaur Jr always sounded massive.  It ,makes sense to have J Mascis wrap his guitar around “Entertainment.”

“What you want, what you do to me.”

Phoenix is in Vancouver on March 28th to perform at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.

“My brother David took me to see Dinosaur Jr. live in Paris around the time when [1991’s] Green Mind was released (…) I have been a fan since then.” Phoenix front guy Thomas Mars from SPIN.

And uhhh… J Mascis is putting out as purple shoe.

Zerbin

Zerbin is getting the local tag because the pleasant surprise of Rifflandia V has relocated from The City of Champions to the Garden City.

We know and love Zerbin from their radio single “New Earth.”  Since the success of that single, Zerbin has moved to the land of rain and brunch to record a new record.  While that gets wrapped, the group has an ep for us this Spring.  It is called Touch and features the song “Take Your Heart.”

A couple LIVE shows coming up featuring Zerbin.

Tuesday, March 26th at Lucky Bar, Victoria
Thursday, March 28th at Joe’s Apartment, Vancouver

On Pitchfork today, they did a review of Matthew Houck’s 6th record as Phosphorescent.  It was a good pick as I am really enjoying the alt-country vibes of this song “Song for Zula.”

I’ve had this song on repeat this morning and afternoon.  Quality.

of_monsters_and_men
I saw this song at the top of the Hype Machine Pops today…. our favourite Icelandic folksters Of Monsters and Men covering the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

The song was recorded earlier in the year when Of Monsters and Men were in Australia.  I believe the song was recorded at a radio station?  The track is “Skeletons” originally found on YYY’s It’s Blitz.

I like that the lead male vocalist is named Ragnar, same as the dude from Vikings!

Young Galaxy are normally getting remixed.  Today they do the mixing…check out their reworking of the Tegan & Sara super-single “Closer.

I am mightily excited for Young Galaxy’s Ultramrine out on April 23rd.

Go with yourself…. and HAPPY FRIDAY!

beat happening
I picked up my guitar for the first time in a long time today.  My fingers are weak.  When I was a kid growing up in the wilds of Coquitlam most my friends played something, usually guitar.

A friend in grade 9 named Adam was pretty good.  Him and Dave Younghusband and Drew formed a band called Redrum and later Martyr.  I remember that Adam self-taught …himself…to play guitar.  He bought Guitar magazine which came with some tabs at the end.  And he’d just figure it out.  When the internet started getting wired into people’s homes with those Skrillex sounding dial-up modems, Dave’s family had it, and a printer.  Whoa… infinity tabs.

The guys would learn all sorts of metal, speed metal, thrash, some punk.  It was lots of fun to watch the guys make some noise.  I never had the patience for it.  Later, I bought a guitar from Alex Harford (I think) for $75.  I started thrashing on it (trying to Blink 182 REALLY fast).  Before I could get anywhere approaching actual music, someone stepped on it at a party and it broke.

I sucked and I was also broke…so no new guitar.

Then last year I bought one.

But learning shit is hard, so basically I turned my amp up loud after work, and just made noises for awhile.  I realized I would never actually learn anything if I left it at work and brought it home.  Where is now sits, neglected in the corner.  Until today.

Got the hankering to figure out a song and I thought of two.  Bear in Heaven’s “Lovesick Teenagers” which is mighty, but I don’t get it. And Beat Happening’s “Indian Summer.”  Two chords (and I can play the drums on my maschine).  I like your style Beat Happening.

I blogged before about the strange beauty of Beat Happening.  I figure if I can get D and G down… you know, that’s something.

Obsessed, OBSESSED!

The tab I found for “Lovesick Teenagers” seems simple enough, maybe 5 chords… basic drums (so I can do that too)…but the execution looks a lot harder than the letters on the screen.

OK, that’s all I got.  Beat Happening, yeah groovy. Go with yourself.
