Rolla

An email from my homeboy Matt let me know that Rolla Olak will be opening for Vince Vaccaro on March 15th at Sugar Nightclub.

Zoners of a certain vintage year will remember a band of the month called Grace Nocturnal.  Then he joined Boy, a Canadian indie band of the mid-2000s.  They had a couple modern rock radio hits including this 2004 jam, “Up In This Town.”

These days, Rolla (who I believe is based out of Vancouver?) is doing a solo thing.  I’ve been listening to  his latest record Western Heart today and really feeling the song “Rainy Day.”  What a perfect sad, raining day song to dream about your crush to (or dwell on a love that went south?).

Victoria rockers Mindil Beach Markets stopped by the Zone Afternoon Show to talk about their new record, It Might Take Long, talk about the dead frog on the cover, and lay down a live take of their single “Smoking Gun.”

MBM perform THIS Friday at Sugar Nightclub.

Sometimes it can feel like a band came out of “nowhere.”  But that is almost never the case.

Glasgow’s Chvrches are quickly becoming one of my favourite groups.  Pitchfork caught up with the group to get some of their ideas.  One part that stood out for me was lead singer Lauren Mayberry talking about women in music and in pop music.

“I did my dissertation on the idea of femininity and women’s writing, so I spent eight months reading about how women are portrayed in the media in terms of images and tone of voice and what words are used. It’s something that I think about all the time, so I’ve been on the offensive with that from the start. We’ve had a couple of situations where people pitched things to us that we would never do, like individual entries in women’s magazines. It’s nice of them to offer, but I don’t ever want to do that. Not that there’s anything wrong with anybody doing that– that’s absolutely their choice– but it would make it trickier for me to sleep at night. I worry enough anyway.”

She goes on to talk about her lyrics.

“Someone once said to me that no one gives a shit about the lyrics in pop songs, but I find that very offensive because I always listen to them. I never wanted to write really cheesy pop lyrics– like, “baby, baby, the sun is shining”– that’s not something that interests me personally. I’m always wanting to write something that has some kind of meaning.”

Great article.  And band member Martin Doherty performed with the Twilight Sad?  Awesome.

INVADERS FROM THE MAINLAND! Saturday night at Talk’s Cheap on Pandora…. check out a couple quality bands from Vancouver.

Falling Archer sent an email to let me know that both these Vancouver bands are worth your time…

Let’s start with Juvenile Hall.  Falling Archer says “they have kind of a Bikini Kill sound.”

and Falling Archer says of The New Values  “their album shreds! total old school so-cal punk vibe.”  They have a song about Don McKellar… and that’s neat enough to get a feature.

You’ll find all things punk rock on The Zone during The Punk Show with Jason Lamb.

I got an email today from Robert Dale.  The Seattle (not pictured above) musician and producer has recorded his first song as Belgian Fog (pictured above, Belgium from Nat Geo).

You’re going to hear a wonderfully quirky and catchy indie pop song.  Lyrically, he hooks you in with a song filled with the self doubt that I am sure so many of us can relate to.

Robert, I hope your journeys put you on the Clipper for a show in Victoria some time!  I’d try to make some time to see Belgian Fog.

They got that drink The London Fog (or the more grown up London Fog), I wonder what a Belgian Fog would taste like?

Gosh darn, this song is catchy.  I think I love it.

sweets
Today, we travel to the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina for some lo-fi garage rock & roll.  The Sweets are brothers Justin and Zach Romaro.  These bros are making a fuzzing howling rock filtered through a vintage 60s pop haze.  if you’ve been feeling FIDLAR, Jeff The Brotherhood, The Oh Sees, Ty Segall or Wavves…. you might find something here to enjoy too.

They are on a mission to release tons and tons of music.  You know, whatever works for you.  A sampled a bit of the Hai ep… and liked all four songs.  I’ll share Pol Plastino’s new soundtrack jam.

chvrches
The Scottish trio Chvrches sound delightful.  Perfect pop music and one of Coral’s current faves.  We’ll have to get our hands on the Recover ep when it comes out March 25th.  Today a blog called A Feast of Beast posted a song that was new to me.  I could not find a proper stream so I ripped their stream and I’ll share it here with you.

Chvrches – “Now Is Not The Time”

Such a pretty song.  The band is getting all the hype with the BBC’s Zne Lowe calling the upcoming ep the “hottest record in the world!”  Dare to believe the hype?

Sacrilege
Choirs are so hot right now…. and you’ll hear one in the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs single “Sacrilege.”  Their new record is called Mosquito and it will come out on April 16th.

Consequence of Sound says: “It’s one spicy little rocker which features a 20-person gospel choir. Needless to say, somebody’s been listening to ‘Gimme Shelter'”.

Happy Monday! Go with yourself.

BonehoofI don’t know what I think about Bonehoof‘s cover art.  I think I kind of like it!

The Victoria bluesy folk rockers but out an ep on February 9th. Benji dropped off a copy for me at The Veneto Lounge and I’ve had it in the Purple Mini-Van since.

Sad rock and roll…the best kind (sometimes).

Bonehoof have a show at Lucky Bar on March 13th.
