At the end of 2011, The Airchecker named the Zone, The Station of the Year! Or maybe its… #RadioStationOfTheYear2011 in twitter speak.

He asked me to talk a bit about what goes on at the Zone to make it go.

To start, you can find the Cole’s notes on the history of the station from our wikipedia page.

The operation of the Zone is generally less exotic than many people think.

We have five DJs, a news person, a sports person (WHL Royals play-by-play), a music director/program director, a boss person,  a Promotions street team person… and then most all the other jobs are shared with the Q! (promotions, creative, production, traffic, sales, engineering, internet) and/or the Pattison Broadcasting chain as a whole (more engineering and administration). Check it >> Zone Staff

Its a pretty chill place to work as far as work environments go.  Bossman Johnny basically expects you to show up… engage in some form of regular office hours and demonstrate a superior radio show ever time you’re in-charge of pushing the buttons.  The rest is pretty much a chose-your-own adventure from there.  We meet weekly to discuss the direction of the radio station. John will discuss any challenges, complaints or praise we’ve received from the community then Bryan Capistrano (Programming) and Tindy Bassi (Promotions) let us know what is happening and what’s going to happen… then discussion and feedback…

I wouldn’t say The Zone is a democracy, but it also doesn’t feel like a corporate dictatorship.

We also meet to discuss which music to add to rotation.  Our music department is led by Bryan with myself as assistant and Jade Nixon and Pol Plastino’s help, hard work and insight.  Basically we listen to music, debate on which songs we think will excite Zoners the most and add them. From my understanding, a fairly standard practice with our contemporary modern rock stations in Canada.

Our promotions team dreams up the promotions that you’ll hear on all the other radio stations next year.  Tindy Bassi is the director and she is responsible for both The Q! and the Zone.  She is assisted by Allie Bowman (who focuses more on the Zone) and Chris Loran (who maybe leans more Q!). And we have a street team person named Clorisa.

Online and social media is Webmeister Bud.  His office is covered in bubble wrap and is a highlight of tours when schools come through the station.  He handles the website, direction for social media (which is executed by pretty much any Zone staff member), edits video and shoots concert footage and takes photos.  We also have lots of friends that help with concert pictures and videos too (and comics, and stuffed DJ dolls).

Production is the domain or Sheldon Hovde with Cassie Price and Caleb Kirby. Sheldon has 800 kids, Cassie reads books and Caleb talks puck with me ever since Dave Sawchuk moved to Edmonton to work for EMI.

Mark Adams is the Q’s PD but he also helps Bryan and I with music and programming direction and also handles a lot of the airchecks and WHL broadcasts… plus any other special projects that require insight.

As for Victoria Royals games… Marlon Martins was brought in from Lethbridge to do play-by-play.  I went to BCIT with Marlon back in like… 2000?  Something like that.  Small world.

Our DJs are Dylan Willows with Jason Lamb doing news… Pol Plastino is mid days, I do Afternoon Drive and Jon Williams and Jade Nixon handle evenings and weekends. *** oh and Trevor on Sunday mornings!

AND then there is… the Sales Team which includes our resident Calgary Flames fan and traffic, and administration, and engineering and also all the charity and community work above and beyond promotional events administered through the TLC Fund and…. hmmm that’s a radio station!

Thank you for listening.

Well god bless those sexy vampires… if there is something to take away from the Jabob and Wilhelm and Clumsy and… I can’t remember all their names…. Twilight puts a little effort into their soundtrack when it comes to finding something kinda interesting to expose all the 12 year-old-girls, their moms and radio DJs too.

The latest installment of the Twilight saga’s soundtrack features a Tennessee band called The Features.  Coral and I have been jamming out this song on Alt-Nation for the past little while and grooving on it.  I thought I better download and hopped on iTunes. Fiddlesticks!  It wa son the Twilight soundtrack which… made me feel like an idiot.  Damn you constructed fake indie hipster Hollywood-ism! damn you!  They tricked me… but whatever, I like the song so here it is.

The Features – “From Now On”

A fun, bratty, pop-rock song.  I dig it.  I don’t dig that the single is not available for legal download or included on any Features records or LP.  You MUST buy into the Twilight world to get it.  I might suggest you find clandestine means to source the song.

Also… I tried to go for a run last night.  My twitter and Facebook feed is (or are) constantly bombarded with people bragging about how they are “runners.”  I thought maybe it was fun club to be in.  Its not… man, its a lot of work and I am a fat mutha fucker.

That’s all I got… Go with yourself.

I’ve been thinking I should write a “new years” post… you know, something to reflect on 2011, or maybe, what I plan and hope for in 2012.  I had some ideas rattling around in my brain the past couple days but in the end decided to try and focus on myself and stay off the internet as best I could.  (well I was on twitter and Instrgram… but for some reason I don’t count them).

Parts of 2011 I was not into….  But I feel a little wiser, and a little more excited on some projects.  Mostly it is about starting small… being a contact hitter, getting on base.  I’ll leave the long ball for the guys that….

Today I found a song in an amazing twist and a click.  Reading about the records to look forward to in the winter of 2012 and spied a new album from Nada Surf.

The end of January will feature a record called “The Stars Are Indifferent to Astronomy.”
Have a listen to “When I Was Young.”

Give an email, get a download: Nada Surf dot com

“Came home early, quatre to two. I don’t need more wine, I’m coming for you.”

Magical….

That has to be one of the more romantic lines I’ve heard in a song in quite some time.  Nada Surf always seems to paint landscapes that I want to live in.  I’d imagine if I knew these guys in real life, we’d be friends…probably bitch about the same things and pretend to be into rock climbing together.

Its Day 03 of 2012 and already a few things are coming up Milhouse.  I went snow shoeing on January 1st… and on the 3rd… a fantastic MP3. I wonder what’s up for tomorrow?

Things are slowly rumbling back to life.  I’ve been working so things got real Monday morning at 4:30AM when my alarm went off… but in an amazing twist of fate my WHOLE family came to visit Victoria yesterday. I got to have Christmas again Monday afternoon and dinner at my brother CJ’s place.

All-in-all, things exceeded expectations on what I thought was going to be a more insular Christmas time.

Maybe I got a little spoiled.

Christmas Eve had the house FULL of family at Alyx’s place for a Christmas dinner with Coral’s family.  Nana slept over and we were able to do Christmas morning bright and early with everyone then watched movies.

Monday after work… my family was here and Boxing Day had me and my Mom experimenting with deep-fried pickles. Considering we didn’t know what we were doing, we adapted quickly and did alright.

What a great Christmas…. New Years has me DJing (what else is new) but I might try snow shoeing on January 1st. I am pretty excited to sort that out.  We’ll see how I feel.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

OK… two more wall papers for two more computers that I had to customize today.  Both with a wintery vibe as we get no snow in British Columbia for Christmas.

First up… Snowy Alberta.

Coral saw my post the other day where I talked about Kermode Bears and Greenland and and she was like… “of course you picked those pictures you nerd.”

Whatever, one day I am going to see with my own two eyes a Kermode bear and go to Greenland!

and now… this is Switzerland, but it sure evokes memories of Canada doesn’t it.

I think that’s all I got… for now.  If I don’t blog again before Christmas, then Merry Christmas.  Thank you for reading.

Neat.  We got our own unique passwords on the computers at work (goooooooo 2011!) so that means I can personalize my desktop as its not as much of a shared work space as before.

My favourite spot to track a desktop image would be from National Geographic.  I poked around for awhile and couldn’t quickly find a South Georgia Island, so I settled on a Kermode Bear for the office computer and Greenland for the Zone On Air computer.

OK, maybe not the most compelling blog post ever.

Gotye is quickly becoming one of the biggest things on the radio in Western Canada right now.

The Melbourninian one has a bit of history.  I got an email from my man Michael in Edmonton imploring me to check out the Supermayer Super Mess remix of an early 2008 single… “Hearts a Mess.”

Gotya – “Hearts a Mess (Supermayer Super Mess Remix)”

Download MP3 >> Gotye – Hearts A Mess (Supermayer Supermess Remix)

Oh this song sounds sensual.  Locks into a nice groove that ever so delicately builds.  I can already tell that this will be  a big part of my lounge sets.  Hearing this interesting remix got me wondering if there are any remixes of the hot jammer “Somebody That I Used to Know” on Soundcloud.  Yup… a whole bunch.  Here are a few faves from my audio adventures this evening.

Downloads MP3:
Somebody That I Used to Know (Rishi’s REMIX)
Somebody That I Used To Know (Starfuckers Remix) – Gotye
Somebody That You Used To Know (Arcade Riot Remix) 18-22-01

If you have the song earwormed in your head like I do…then maybe these remixes will be useful to you.  I know they’ll be pulling stud duty in my DJ sets for the next little while.

Follow These Rules

You ever get that feeling that you’re doing life wrong?  I get that all the time.

I read this great article the other day about how Facebook is making us unhappy. Basically forcing us to confront jealousy everyday we log in and see our friends in awesome places, bragging about awesome jobs, awesome kids and awesome love lives.

You’d think we’d all be awesome being surrounded in awesome all day… but it just makes you hate the word awesome.

I need one of my totem songs right about now…

Tom Petty – “Climb That Hill”

My day is a whirlwind of activity from the moment I wake up… till I can get Maddy to settle into bed.  Then its my time… but by the time I turn to look for Coral, she’s asleep. Then I’m by myself, which ain’t all bad… but not a lot happens at night unless i wanna drink.  Which I do sometimes….  I often wonder what the point is?  Like… what day am I working towards… and what’s scaring me is; there isn’t one.  I’m just plugging holes to keep the whole thing from falling down.  I want to be an adventurer.  If you were to ask me, “what do you wanna be when you grow up?”  I’d say explorer.

I watched a video the other month about the sport of indoor rock climbing. It looked pretty cool.  Fun, athletic, adventurous… the kind of thing I want to do, but just can’t find the time, energy or budget.

BUT!

There is a gym right, like RIGHT by my place. And god bless ’em, they are open late (and reduced rate late at night). Kismet I tells ya.

Today I fought the urge to watch a movie and eat junk (FOUGHT! I wanted and still do want a slurpee so bad… WTF is that?)… I put my pants back on and drove to the gym and signed up for an introduction lesson.  Wish me luck!

This close to Christmas… it just ain’t right to by yourself things.  But come on, new Silversun Pickups single is just a $3 digital download. I’ve tipped more money for brutal service.

For Black Friday Record Store Day the Silversun Pickups packaged up a few b-sides from the Swoon sessions.  These songs would become the “Seasick” 10 inch single.  The songs became available on Tuesday as a digital download and I finally find myself with a few minutes to listen.

So lets hit play shall we.

“Seasick”

“Broken Bottles”

“Ribbons & Detours”

The lead and namesake single is a big meandering Silversun jam. “Seasick” might be on the a-side, but this song doesn’t scream radio single.  It is pretty and melodic… but not propulsive.  Maybe too cerebral for a modern rock radio station.

“Broken Bottles;” now here is a song that could work on the radio.  A lot of energy.  Fuzzy, twisted guitar.  Gets punchy.  I heard this song in the mix of Alt Nation on XM, sounded rad.

The final song is a slower paced cut. “Ribbons & Detours” sounds like Nikki Monninger singing.  Once agin, this song returns to a more meditative state.

All sounds good to my ears and a great little $3 investment between records.  SSPUs are in studio working on their third full length which is due in the Spring of 2012.  Right now they’re calling the record ‘3.’  Easy peasy.

Go with yourself.

Wonderfully savage. Trent Reznor and Karen O cover Led Zepplin’s “Immigrant Song” for the American, Girl With a Dragon Tattoo movie.
