Kaleo is cool. Friends from school from a town just outside Iceland’s principle city of Reykjavik. Getting a ton of buzz for this slow burner “Way Down We Go.” The band is already a bit of a big deal in Iceland and Europe.
Their name is borrowed from another Island kingdom. Kaleo is Hawaiian for “The sounds.” neat.
The video is cool…channeling a little Joe Vs The Volcano.

Vancouver Island band Malahat sent over their single for a song called “The Grit.”
When I heard this song I messaged Ben back and said, “I like it, reminds me of Monster Truck!” And he said that’s great because that band is big influence on them.
They’ll be in Vancouver on May 13th for a show at Studio Records and I’ll do my best to there (if I’m not DJing that night).
They’re also playing in Victoria on April 1st with Band of Rascals.

Because I’m an old man, but also a DJ, I have to wear glasses when I’m at the turntables. But I think I need to get some sweet Kurt Rambis style athletic glasses, because looking down all the time my glasses fall off my head.
I was in Victoria on the weekend. A group of women yelled, “HARRY POTTER!” at me as I walked by them into Lucky Bar. I’ll take that. I think it was the glasses.

Loving Miike Snow’s “Genghis Khan” single. His record iii came out earlier in March.
Is the song about extreme jealousy? Or control? Chill Miike…chill.

DJing Thursday night at Match! See you then.

I mentioned Bob Moses’ “Tearing Me Up” on the last blog post and forgot I haven’t put up the Vancouver-and-now-New York deep house duo.
I love it when I’m DJing and play a song…and you see everyone bopping and grooving and folks come up to ask, “what is this? I like it!” Maybe a couple phones out in the restaurant shazamming.
The bartender came up after this song, “the staff likes this type of stuff. Play more.”

Occasionally it stops raining in Vancouver…and when it does, not a bad view eh? That from the CFOX studio looking east toward the Eastside of downtown and out towards the suburbs. My iphone camera is not a real camera…but you can see out to Brentwood (left) and Metrotown (right) and even Mount Baker (kinda….tucked to the right of Metrotown).
Last night I was DJing at Match Pub in New Westminster. I have been DJing there on Thursdays for the past little bit. The first few sets I’d say have been….uneven? as I get back into the swing of it, but last night was the first time it felt good. Settled into some deep house, chill wave beats, a little hip hop or remixed hip hop and modern rock. I think it sounded alright. Still a work in progress, but last night was encouraging. That Bob Moses track was a hit, actually had a few folks come up to ask what it was.
Plucked through my old Veneto playlists and played a few old favourites like Sir Sly…then today my man Jesiah messaged me to turn me onto a new Sir Sly single, “Expectations.”
Last Fall, we set off on the process of writing LP2. “Expectations” was one of the first songs that came. Since then,…

My wife Coral and I went out the other night for a random Wednesday night of debauchery. A friend was having a birthday and said they’d be crushing at a place in Chinatown called The Emerald. It was off Main Street and Nik described it as, “Emerald Room is on Gore, it looks like a foreclosed-upon stripclub from outside, and then inside it looks like an opium den where you’re gonna get your pinky finger cut off with a cigar cutter, and then you go through a curtain and it’s full of disillusioned hipsters drinking negronis. I love it there.”
He wasn’t totally wrong. It was a bit of a battle getting the kids to sleep, so we left the suburbs late, and it was a rain storm but we persevered.
Found the spot in a deserted rain drenched Chinatown.
When we got there, there was some weirdo jazz-ish band playing, lots of the mentioned hipsters…but no Nik. (he apparently had been denied service? oy vey)…But Coral and I made the most of it and crushed a few cocktails. I had to have one of those mentioned negronis.
Hey blogger friends, Happy Friday! Go with yourself.

Seaborne is an electronic duo made up of singer Maryse Bernard and programmer Solomon Krauss-Imlach.
We know and love Maryse from her time in Victoria. She sang in a band called Woodsmen.
This new song is from an upcoming ep called Lustre due out in the summer.
You can read more about the project and inspiration behind the cut by hitting their profile on Exclaim!

I mocked up a new playlist on the weekend to soundtrack our adventures and I was sure to include what new Frightened Rabbit music was out there.
Their new record is called Painting of a Panic Attack and comes out on April 8th from Rough Trade. The Scottish band went to the Ditmas Park area of Brooklyn to record the album with Aaron Dessner of The National.
I have this song on repeat!

Back from a whirlwind tour of Victoria. I went for the day yesterday to do some work on our rental apartment….met up with my brother. Had a lunch at Spinnakers, met a wedding couple, a few other chores and back to the ferry. Too fast! Gunna have to make a time for a proper visit.

Hey, they put me on TV again…this time it was to speculate why the Squamish Festival was cancelled.
Watch it on the Global Morning News.
Face for radio right?
OK…some musics.
Fuck, woke up crushed by allergies. Love spring. Love Vancouver….but starting in February it starts getting green and flowery in this part of the world, and fuck me.
Bear Hands is cool. Band is from Brooklyn. They had a couple radio hits. New record is called You’ll Pay For This and its’ out on April 15th.
First single is “2AM.” Nothing good happens after 2AM….it’s like they’ve partied in Vancouver before….

When Lukas Graham‘s “7 Years” came out, I wanted to hate it. But I can’t. And the dude is from Copenhagen? Neat. Happiest place on Earth so the internet says.
Happy Friday!
