OK, The Arcs don’t have BRAND NEW music…this song from the Dan Auerbach project came out like a month ago. But let’s reflect.

Here’s a little fun radio commercial we made at the radio factory today…. CFOX Radio Camp. If you think it is mildly funny I always appreciate a share.

kurt-vile

Philly rock & roller Kurt Vile is pretty much perfect to me these days.

He’ll be putting pout a new record in September on Matador called b’lieve i’m goin down. The follow up to 2013′s most excellent Walkin On a Pretty Daze is a darker record from the man, Kurt saying it “definitely has that night vibe.”

Kurt Vile traveled all over the place to record the record including stops in Brooklyn, LA, and Athens, Georgia. The dude even stopped in to Rancho de la Luna (Josh Homme’s studio) for a desert session of recording.

Kim Gordon released this statement about the record through Matador:

Kurt does his own myth-making; a boy/man with an old soul voice in the age of digital everything becoming something else, which is why this focused, brilliantly clear and seemingly candid record is a breath of fresh air. Recorded and mixed in a number of locations, including Los Angeles and Joshua Tree, b’lieve i’m goin down… is a handshake across the country, east to west coast, thru the dustbowl history (“valley of ashes”) of woody honest strait forward talk guthrie, and a cali canyon dead still nite floating in a nearly waterless landscape. The record is all air, weightless, bodyless, but grounded in convincing authenticity, in the best version of singer songwriter upcycling.

Let’s hit play.

Hmm roadtrip weekend to Portland or Seattle in October?

10-17 Portland, OR – Crystal Ballroom %
10-18 Seattle, WA –  The Showbox %

Here’s a older cut that was featured on an episode of Shameless….

Up late…. working working. Feeling a bit behind the 8-ball after a couple weeks off. I want to get the radio show firing on all cylinders. Need to update my wedding DJ business, present myself as a Vancouver wedding DJ, update the website, upgrade equipment. Bought a new laptop today. I am excited about that. My old laptop is a 2010? Macbook Pro. Some old Intel Core 2 duo processor, 4 gigs of RAM…it just lost the ability to keep up with Serato DJ and the Numark NS ii.

i feel confident I’ll be able to compete in Vancouver against the other wedding DJs once I polish up the website and upgrade some equipment.

I had some other thoughts about what I might want to do for another job or to expand my production. I’ve been looking into Projection mapping…following this person on Instagram called Ayramultimedia. Their stuff looks amazing and I wonder if I could create something like that for a wedding reception?

And still I have some other ideas. God dammit.

Spent the night bouncing around the information superhighway researching things. All the while, this song we bouncing around my head. Remember last fall when Eastside was briefly a thing?

I feel like there is still so much I want to do tonight, but I must sleep. Madelyn has day camp tomorrow. Coral and I are (and Jack) are meeting her friend Jane at Burgoo. THEN, I need to focus on putting together a radio show. Huge day in front of me…and still the gears turn in my head.

This blog isn’t really about anything. Just writing things out.

Go with yourself.

My Mom and Dad brought this poster back for Coral from their trip to Northern Europe. It is a huge poster for such a simple graphic but IKEA had a frame. It’s looking good in our basic basement setup in the suburbs.

And look at that…get our Andy Warhol print from the Stockholm Moderna Museet up and Atlas Genius share a new song… “Stockholm.” Also weirdly…my son Jack is rocking his Sweden soccer jersey this morning while baby dancing to the song, what does it mean?

Oh this song came on soundcloud next. I love it.

Still putting our little home together. I think we need a mini couch and my wife claims we NEED a Vitamix so off on adventures of domestic bliss.

Hey music blog reader…back in Vancouver after an adventure around the Pacific Northwest. Our original plans had to be scaled back but we still managed 7 days tooling around between Seattle and Portland and even Cannon Beach!

Both cities are fantastic. I hadn’t been to Portland in years and it great getting a few days to stroll, eat, and see the sights. The picture above was from our picnic in Laurelhurst Park. We found this little light meals place called Cheese and Crack. They made up some yummy cheese and cracker plates and salami sandwiches, a couple iced coffees and radlers, and we wandered the lovely park in the 30 degree plus heat. Stumptown was magical. Do I love it even more than Seattle or San Francisco?

Back in Seattle we got up to all sorts of stuff. Parades, parks, restaurants, a Mariners game (they got dismantled by the Angels, but it was fun and my Dad’s 59th birthday.), and I even hit a show!

Appleseed Cast performed at the Sunset Tavern in Ballard. The band is on a 15th anniversary tour. When I met my wife Coral, she listened to these guys and got me into them. To be honest, we hadn’t listened much to their music lately…but seeing as they were on tour I thought, “I should check this out.”

I punched “Ballard” into my computer car and it took me 30 minutes west to a groovy neighbourhood that was hopping on a Saturday summer night. It was Ballard Seafood Fest and people were everywhere. Stumbling around drunk with bellies full of seafood.

The Sunset was a great little tavern on one of the main strips. One of those roads where it seemed every other business was a public house or restropub.

The back room was a small, square space with a stage crammed in a corner. It made me nostalgic for being 20 again and checking out bands and getting drunk.

The support bands were both great. Coaster are from Chicago. They said chill a lot. They had the quiet, loud, quiet, then loud again thing down. I like that. I *think* they played this song first? And it was my favourite of the set.

Adjy are from Florida or maybe North Carolina? They had an interesting thing going on. Xylophones, group drumming, REM-esque jangly guitars, song subject matter that was too deep for me.

Adjy means a person who disturbs, causes trouble. The lead singer guy kept trying to explain all his songs, there was something happening behind each cut. At one point he asked the audience to just start talking during a song and the band pulled out books and all started reading aloud!

These guys ended up being highly entertaining.

This is neat. David Sitek plays in TV on the Radio. He also records music as Maximum Balloon. He released his first new song since 2010 the other day. Features Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Tunde Adebimpe of TVOTR. Sounds rad.

While on holiday I got an email alerting me to this fine cover form Surfer Blood. They take on Outkast’s all-time party jammer “Hey Ya.”

I still have some more music I need to sift through, a few bands I think I promised to get up…so I’ll try to hammer those out in the next few….but here’s the thing, still on holiday till Monday…we’ll see.

Happy Thursday to you. A few more adventures to get after this week! Go with yourself.

Aloha from scenic Seattle, Washington, USA. I am at my sister-in-law’s place in a town called Redmond. We’re thinking of rolling into Seattle today for a bit and wandering around Belltown. Thrillist had an article…14 best brunch spots and a place called Local 360 looked good. I guess we’ll check that out. Then in the afternoon it sounds like we’ll beat the heat by taking the kids to a river near by for a float and a swim.

I am on my wordpress app while everyone is having a lazy morning. I heard brand new Ought and felt like I should get this song out to you. I hope i can sort out the blog!

Not sure if that embedded. Maybe today you’ll have to enter that into your URL listen the old fashioned way.

New record is called Sun Coming Down and will be out September 18th. I wish it was today! The single or share song is “Beautiful Blue Sky.” A long 7 plus minute alternative meditation.

That’s all I got for now from the road. Rap at you later.

Checking out some melodic hard rock, or “post hard-core?” Michigonian (Michiganite?) band We Came As Romans.  I saw that their song “The World I Used To Know” was getting a little feature play on some rock radio stations in the US so I punched it up. I like it. Reminds me a little of the music I used to listen to in the 2000s.That’s kinda funny because the song is about reflecting on back in the day. Neat.

Disturbed-Immortalized

Disturbed are back after a 4 year gap with a record called Immortalized. The record is out on August 21st.  The first single is called “The Vengeful One.” Singing about a dying world, vengeful Gods, blackest moments, killing you and you know why!

Hey remember that song “Down With The Sickness?” Jeezus, did that song come out in 2000?

In other news, front guy David Draiman is off the social media. He recently deleted his twitter account. I feel him. He says to Minneapolis radio station 93 X; “Social media has become a playground for trolls, a playground for these people who prey on one another. You can’t get anything decent done on there anymore; you just open yourself up to constant attack. And I’m just done with it. I’m done with it. I hope that the couple of years of my being as involved in it as I was meant something to people. I hope that they gleaned something from it, or took something away from it, or at least were entertained or something, because, now, I’m becoming a recluse.”

Pool time

Happy Canada Day to you, happy America Day to my American friends finding the blog. Back from holiday in Kelowna. I DJ’d a wedding at the Hotel El Dorado. Oh man it was hot, but a great adventure. Coral and I brought the kids and visited with her Dad, brother and Roberta. They have a beautiful house up on the hill over looking Okanagan Lake. The weather was closer to what you’d expect in Las Vegas. Scortcher, but Grandpa Rob and Roberta put in a pool, so it was all good.

Now I am at the radio factory for a couple days and listening to some new music.

LibertinesBritish rockers The Libertines are putting out a record called Anthems for Doomed Youth on September 4th. Their third album will be their first in 11 years! The single “Gunga Din” was premiered on Annie Mac’s BBC show.

The band is currently playing festivals in the UK and recent;y took the stage at Glastonbury.

“The Libertines will always be the band that defined a generation. Their return is one that matters.” — NME

That is bold…but I will say my wife Coral always loved these guys.

Fratellis

The Fratellis are another UK (Scottish) band with new music. Their record, Eyes Wide, Tongue Tied is out at the end of August on the 21st.

The Fratellis will also be in Vancouver on September 30th at The Commodore. Here is the first single, “Baby Don’t You Lie to Me.”

Sure is a punchy song. You’ll be singing along by the end of the first listen.

Go with yourself.

sheepdogs

The Sheepdogs will be in the Lower Mainland on Saturday, August 8th for the Burnaby Blues & Roots Festival. The band also has a new record coming out and single coming to CFOX called “Downtown.”

Ewan Currie of the Sheepdogs took a couple minutes to talk about the new single, the sound we can expect on the new album, and recording in rural Ontario.

Off on holiday my friends. If I can figure out wifi on the road and hear a song I gotta blog about…I might check in with ya…if not, I’ll connect with you after Canada Day! (July 1st).
