Madelyn

Today is my daughter’s last day of grade 1! Wow. There she is with Coral… I dunno… not even one year old yet (summer 2008). Grade 1 is an interesting time. Your kid goes from being curious little child to a curious little person. And she can read!

I’m sad I don’t get to be in Victoria today. But I am excited for a summer of adventure and grade 2 for Madelyn!

We have a little adventure to Kelowna coming up and I am excited for that!

This is a band from Philadelphia (and and I’ll have another Philly band for you next) that I read about in Rolling Stone. They said Hop Along sound like 80s alternative and are signed to Saddle Creek. Those two things are enough for me to hit play.

This first song is older.

Rolling Stone highlighted this cut saying, “The album’s emotional centerpiece, “Powerful Man,” recounts an experience in which the singer witnessed a man beating his child in public and felt powerless to stop it. “It’s not a hero’s story,” she says. “I wanted it to be about how horrible that was, and how I was a part of it by not doing something.””

The Las Vegas alt-rock radio station X 107 was featuring the Philly band Cheerleader the other night. They do one of those “vote for your favourite song” at night things and Cheerleader went on a nice little run. So I guess desert dwelling rockers enjoy these guys. A fun pop-rock band for sure.

New one for us here at CFOX. British anthemic Queen-esque band called The Struts. A ton of adds on US alternative radio…has a big sing-a-along moment.

and finally…last day of school. I gotta.

Maddy on the lake
Happy Tuesday… hammering through a ton of emails today. Try to pluck out the gems and yeah, there were many.

Also I just want to say, I had a great weekend. Lots of work, but some time for play. My daughter went camping with Grandma and Grandpa (and aunts, uncles and cousins) at Cultas Lake. She had an amazing time, and as I said on the previous blog post, more lake time is in her future. She excels at lake floats. I’m so proud of her.

I’m sorry, the gems, let’s get to it. Iron & Wine teamed up with Band of Horses’ Ben Bridwell for a new record called Sing Into My Mouth. The record is out on July 17th and features a collection of covers. The share track today is “The Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)” by the Talking Heads.

How perfect is this song?  C’mon. This track should become the first dance song of every hip wedding couple this summer…and the slightly less hip next summer.

And a couple more listens.

Tracklist looks interesting. Let’s go!

Tracklist:

1 This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody) (Talking Heads)
2 Done This One Before (Ronnie Lane)
3 Any Day Woman (Bonnie Raitt)
4 You Know Me More Than I Know (John Cale)

6 No Way Out of Here (Unicorn / David Gilmour)
7 God Knows (You Gotta Give to Get)  (El Perro del Mar)

atlas genius

Adalaide, South Australia’s preeminent bad boys Atlas Genius are back with a new record on August 28th called Inanimate Objects. The brothers Genius had a couple Much megahits on modern rock radio with “Trojans” and “If So.”

The new song is called “Molecules.” Sounds like Atlas Genius to me…bright, sunny pop rock that will slide in perfectly on one my summertime playlists. Maybe a perfect song for my trip to Kelowna this weekend. It is supposed to be 38 degrees by Sunday. I’m DJing at a nice lake front hotel. My wife’s Dad will likely have the boat out on the water some time. It should be a time. Yeah, Atlas Genius will sound great soundtracking the weekend.

You can pre-order the new record now if you’re into it…or catch up with the band as they continue to tour hard in the USA.

Harpoonist

On Saturday night, Vancouver bands The Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer will be performing at the Vogue Theatre with (the pride of Coquitlam!) The Matinee. A great mix of bluesy rock and alternative country. Let’s have a listen to a couple songs.

Go with yourself.

Gob

Langley punkers Gob have been making music and performing for over 20 years! The band has released 9 records over that time including 2014′s Apt. 13.  Gob will be playing a show July 3rd at The Imperial. I had a chance to chat with Theo from the band.

Current Swell

Victorian west coast roots rockers Current Swell have released a new song off their most excellent 2014 record Ulysses (seriously, the record is essential west coast listening). I have many favourites off the disc and “Bad News” is one of them. A somber cut, the music video talks about ”drug addiction is an illness, not a crime.”

We’ll get a chance to see Current Swell in Squamish on August 6th.

I love music. Go with yourself.

ben browning
Ben Browning of Cut Copy fame has branched out with a solo record called Turns. The Australian producer’s record leans more on the electronic side of what they did with Cut Copy. Reminds me of summertime patio music.

“Life Dudes” has a nice soundtrack vibe.

I always loved Cut Copy so I’ll be sure to download a few of these “blissed out” tracks for sure.

Speaking of patios! And the fact it looks like Ben is making my patio playlist now. I was reading Vancouver is extending patio hours to 1AM, which is nice. I’m an old man living in the ‘burbs…put I will be living at a place with a nice deck. They use a stock image of a generic patio in the news piece and I love the look of those sting lights. I can do that!

pigeon-park

Former CFOX Seeds winners Pigeon Park have a new record called Stripes out now.    I had a chance to talk to the Coquitlam rockers….I had to ask Nick about the closing of the Coquitlam Original Joe’s!

Pigeon Park have a show coming up Saturday June 20th at Imperial Vancouver with Victoria’s Mindil Beachand Vancouver’s Cobra Ramone.

woodwards

I was looking through my mother’s Grade 11 year book. In 1974, she went to Alpha in Burnaby. Lots of groovy 70s-ness throughout. I really liked this ad for Woodward’s.

Trolls? Ogres? Hipsters? Woodward’s get’s it for you. Fun fact, when I was a kid, my Mom would work evenings at a Woodward’s in New Westminster. Neat.

A few songs that drifted by my ear that I thought…”huh, that could be a wedding song….”

New one from Family of the Year.

This one is from Meiko.

And traveling even further back in time… this song is from Katie Herzig.

I downloaded all these cuts to use on my wedding playlists. Maybe there is something here you’ll like.

jack eating

Here is a picture of our youngest. Coral was telling me that he loves sitting by the window to eat his snack! I love this picture.

My family moves over to Vancouver at the end of the month and I can’t wait. My work is shifted a little later in the day so I’ll get to be a stay-at-home Dad for the first half of the day. My wife is taking a few months off before trying to hustle a job so we’re pretty excited for the summer.

The hardest part of this move is missing out on the little things everyday. My weekends in Victoria fly by and as anyone with kids will tell you, “they grow up so fast!” I remember with Madelyn I’d roll my eyes when the veteran parents would say that. But you know what, it is true. If you’re having a kid, or one day you might…that is a true piece of lore from the parents before you. Anyway, trying to live my life and each day like your instagram feed, but at the same time, kinda wishing days to go by so we hit the end of the month and get this summer fired up all together.

OK music… bah bah bah dear diary…

One of our favourite British 90s grungy throwbacks here at CFOX, Wolf Alice, have a new record on June 22nd called My Love is Cool (Dirty Hit Records). We know and love Wolf Alice from their radio song “Moaning Lisa Smile,” (and their amazing set at The Biltmore back in…March?) now we have another listen from the album, “You’re a Germ.” When I was a snot-nosed skid growing up in Coquitlam, people called me Germy. Neat.

Back on the Borns train. “Seeing Stars” is getting some active play on my new playlist. He’s got the line thing through the “O” on his name, I don’t know how to make that with my Canadian keyboard.

and doesn’t this Crystal Fighters song sound like a jingle for a TV commercial? Catchy as fuck. I know, I’m blogging a 2-year-old song, but whatever…feeling it with this sunny hot weather in Vancouver.

hazy
Woke up today and fired up this Hazy Indie Morning playlist while making my coffee and eating a bagel on my deck.

So many gems, here is one I enjoyed. Chris Cohen‘s “Optimist High” from his 2012 record Overgrown Path. Just hits me as a west coast summer song.

Kurt Vile’s “Walkin on a Pretty Day” also popped up.

And Dan Auerbach has a new band, The Arcs, and their song “Stay IN My Corner” also screams hazy summer.
