imagine-dragons-monster-cover-artwork
Imagine Dragons went super nova with their sweeping, huge, anthemic (not really a word I think?), brand of indie-flavoured rock.

The Las Vegas band has already completely dominated modern rock in the Canada and the US with song, “It’s Time,” “Radioactive,” and “Demons.”

Their latest single does not come from their record “Night Visions” (but if it did, what song would you chose?)…. the latest is from the video game Infinity Blade III.  Because I am too much of a nerd, I don’t know what that is…. but apparently its mainstream and popular franchise.  So popular, Imagine Dragons took the time to write and record an original piece for some epic sword fighting battle sequences (I think they sword fight in the game).

Checkity check out “Monster.” Perfect for halloweeeeeeeeeeeen.

Hai girl, you know what else is perfect for Halloween? Ryan Gosling.

Happy Halloweeeeeeeen!

The band is called The Post War.  The four piece from Vancouver were featured on CFOX as one of their seed bands (and won the contest!).

Their single “Boy” was produced by David Botrill who you might know from production duties on records by Tool and Muse.

The song does borrow some elements of Tool’s sound.  Have a listen to “Boy.”

I just like this picture.

Back from a baby overnight hiking trip with my brother.  We had a good and simple weekend of hanging out on Mystic Beach and exploring the Juan de Fuca Trail.  We were the only people camping overnight on the beach which was very cool (Mystic can be pretty busy during the summer).  We took a day hike towards Bear Beach and didn’t pass a single person there or back.

It was nice to be out of cell phone reception for 36 hours or so.  But the whole time, I just wanted to instagram my brother’s stupid backpack! (and post a pic of our amazing fire that we got raging from damp drift wood).

My brother and I will need to plan our next expedition soon.  I wonder if we could pull off a winter hike and camp?

My brother packed along his iPod and a dock for some tunes while huddled around our late October fire sipping on the couple beers we managed to squeeze into our packs.  Lots of quality classic rock, 90s alternative, and even a few contemporary folky types.  Every so often a Current Swell jam would come on and we’d both laugh about how much our situation looked like a Sitka commercial.

Fuck, I need a Sitka poncho so bad.

backpacks
In two sleeps, my brother and I leave (finally) on our first camping expedition!  OK, so it will be a one nighter along the Juan de Fuca trail…its something.  My brother and I have been talking about backpack camping for YEARS.  I dream about camping all the time.  Finally… time + money- new baby, have equaled a brief weekend adventure.  I’ve been hording equipment in small doses all summer.  Got my hands on a backpack and sleeping bag last week. Today I purchased some odds and sods… Saturday morning, we’ll be on the trail. Can’t wait!

The song that will be ear-wormed into my brain might be this happy jam. John Welsh is a Fraser Valley performer performing a white-guy reggae style of music.  My girl Taylor sent this over to me with the warning, “you’ll be humming this song after hearing it.”  I am afraid she is right!

Blitz_Berlin_ONE
I got a message from my homeboy Dean.  Dean was in a band called Theset.  Theset were a popular band from Victoria that decided to take the next level and relocate to Toronto.  Life happened, and that band doesn’t really function too much anymore.  But the original Victoria friends that headed East still make music.

An update to the sound, a rebrand to Blitz // Berlin…. and here we are… a 3 song set as a FREE download.

“Drink”

“Outside”

“Legend”

What do you think?  Do you have a favourite cut?

I like you, do you like Blitz//Berlin?

“You’re a sexy socialite I wish you were a socialist.”

Dig it ChromeoSPIN magazine has this beauty quote from Dave 1, “We’ve been doing this since 2004 (…) It’s like we built the house, then we renovated the house, and now, with the new record, we’re going to have people over for dinner.”

One of the more remarkable shows I have ever seen in Victoria was Chromeo.  They played at Central Bar & Grill on View Street one summer (2005?).  The show was crazy and wonderful.  At one point some bro tried to climb up on stage and the lead singer dude took his mic stand and BOP! right on the head.  Party keeps on raging.

weight on the Brain
Matt Drenik is Battleme.  You might know some of the music from the FX TV show Sons of Anarchy.  Like this song, or this song, or maybe this most excellent Neil Young cover.

Battleme will put out a full length in 2014…until then, he’ll wet our whistles with the Weight on The Brain ep.  I do love his SOA songs, so I thought I better hit play on the psyche-rocker “Just Weight.”

It’s a far more aggressive jam compared to the mostly acoustic songs featured on TV.

I dig that.

Battleme is on tour in the States now and playing a couple shows with Metric.  Ain’t that a pip!

Red-Fang-Whales-And-Leeches
Portland, Oregon mighty sludge rockers Red Fang bring the noise… SPIN magazine likens it to Baroness & Mastodon.  That’s cool.

The first single is a doozy! “Blood Like Cream.”

The Relapse Records store has all sorts of goodies.  This is bad news… I’m trying to pay down my VISA! ahhhhhh Coke Bottle Green vinyl?  Just stop.

Topanga
The band is called Decoded.  They are from Los Angeles, California.  The song is called “Topanga.”  That is all.

Violent_Femmes_-_Why_Do_Birds_Sing
On the way to school this morning with Madelyn we were listening to the radio.  We were punching around looking for a song and settle don The Peak in Vancouver. Laurie and Cory punched up the 1991 song “American Music” by the Violent Femmes.  I love that song.

Back in the olden days, the kids used to dance to rock & roll.  There was club out in Surrey called the Ozone.  Thursday night, they put the beers on cheap and fired up an aggressive dance playlist of rock music.  The times were good.  At the end of the night, the DJ(s) would maybe play some Pennywise “Bro Hymn” or maybe the Violent Femmes “American Music.”

***

So some American music?  What have I heard today that I dig?  How about some hardcore outta Philadelphia.  The band is called Cop Problem.

Pitchfork has the stream.

Then while punching around on Pitchfork I heard this beauty from Hartford.  Magik Markers.

And THEN, this song comes on after Magik Markers on my soundcloud… and Webmeister Bud came running in to the Music Hut, “what is this?”

Bleeding Rainbow?  Cool!
