New single from The Wombats is a real fire cracker!  I always liked the UK band’s “Lets Dance To Joy Division.”  My goodness, was that 2007?  Since then they’ve had a record that I never really got into  and now they are gearing up for their third album.

The first single is called “You Body is a Weapon.”

Lead singer Matthew Murphy said he was inspired seeing a paparazzi guy stalking a member of One Direction. Weird.  He says this about the single:

“It was an easy track to record, although a few lyric changes were made to make it sound slightly less ‘creepy’. At the end of the session, Eric Valentine said ‘I’m really happy with how this has turned out, there is a quality to the lower-mid range that I have been searching for for years, and I think I’ve got it!’ – We have absolutely no idea what this means.”

I don’t know what that means either Matthew.  Good song though.

Old school Victoria
I saw this old advertisement trying to energize people to visit and settle in Victoria!  The nearest Port to the Orient!  I love it.

An email today from Dine Alone Records asking us to check out a recent addition to their roster in Canada.  The band is called Lucius.  5 boys and girls from Brooklyn.  Apparently they got their start at the Berklee School of Music in historic Boston, MA.

Now they are dubbed a “band to watch” by such finely esteemed rags as Rolling Stone and Time magazine.  neat.  Let’s have a listen to their single off the upcoming Wildewoman (October 15th, Dine Alone).

Also the singers are models? Lucius Lace Shift (or at least had a dress named after the band…)

Deap-Vally-Sistrionix-2013-1200x1200

“What you call love baby, I call hell!”

California desert boogie rockers Deap Vally wail… loving their new song “Baby I call Hell.”

Here they are talking about the song to Spin;

Julie Edwards: We didn’t realize the acronym for this song was BICH until we were releasing the song as a single, and people we work with were sending emails back and forth about “BICH artwork.”

Lindsay Troy, guitar/vocals: This is the first song we wrote as Deap Vally — it’s very true to the form of how we initially conceived it. That song was a really simple blues riff that I came up with, and we just wrote a song around it. It’s our set opener, and it’s Deap Vally — it’s the genesis of our band.

destroyer_five_spanish_songs_ep
it is true… entirely in Spanish!

Dan Bejar fronts Destroyer, you will also find him singing on New Pornographers records.

His new ep is called Five Spanish Songs and as the title clearly states, he sing five Spanish songs.

Spin has a quote as to the why; “It felt over for English; good for business transactions, but that’s about it,” he wrote. “The only other language I know is Spanish, and the only Spanish songs I really know are those of Sr. Chinarro, led by Antonio Luque. I’ve been a decades-long fan of how he conducted his affairs, his strange words, his melodies that have always felt so natural (this is important), his bitter songs about painting the light. Something about them, I knew I could do it…”

New music down the pipe from a couple Island artists (who might be living in Vancouver now?).

First…new music video from Johnny Galactic.

Rolla Olak checked in to share his alt-country jam.

Rolla Olak will be in the Nanoose Bay area for a show on October 5th with rising Island stars Towers and Trees. I *think* Jon Williams is MCing the event! No wait… he is MCing the Towers and Trees October 19th show at Canoe.

Radical.  Sub Pop is digging into the vault for a digital reissue of Soundgarden’s debut ep, Screaming Life.

SPIN’s got a nice write up… Youtube has a video!

And since we’re yapping Sub Pop…. how about a cut from their latest singing?  Direct from the UK, it’s the Thumpers.

Not bad… I like that song. Good pick Sub Pop.

A record that is currently living in the Purple Minivan is The Replacements’ TimThe 1985 album is one of my favourites (wait, ALL the Replacements records are one of my favourites…. its one of the Replacements records I have on compact disc!).

The Replacements played their final concert in Chicago on July 4th, 1991.

On November 7th, 1996…. Ella Yelich-O’Conner was born.  At 12, she would be discovered at a talent show and signed to a record deal transforming into Lorde.

One month ago, she posted her cover of The Replacements’ “Swingin’ Party.”

Pitchfork reviewed her record Pure Heroine today, and their spin on the Lorde persona speaks to the beauty of this selection for her.  They call her style “post-internet.”  I liked the line, “(Lorde) has fashioned herself a correspondent on the front lines of elegantly wasted post-digital youth culture and working-class suburban boredom.”

Elegantly wasted?

neon steve
Rad guy DJ Neon Steve took on Rudimental‘s “baby” for a remix because “I love the original so much.”

Remember yesterday on the Mindy Project how Casey became a DJ and then The National showed up?  It was like an episode written for ME!

lung2
The Vancouver punks White Lung are getting ready to release a new 7-inch single on November 5th (Deranged Records).  The A-side is called “Blow it South” and its a real shit-kicker.

Pitchfork says the song “is a relentless aural beating laced with loopy metal riffs that bind the quartet’s all-everything-all-the-time rage to Way’s typically predatory melodies.”  Spin calls it a “dark and clanging, a moody shit-kicker about power struggles.”

I don’t know who to believe? Can’t they both be right?
