All week I have V.I.C. Fest artists stopping by to talk about the festival going down this Saturday at St. Ann’s Academy Grounds.

Part of the event features a Song Writers Session where professional musicians critique songs from people who are brave enough to perform. One member of the panel is Kathryn Calder.

Kathryn performed for many years as part of Victoria’s Immaculate Machine before joining up with The New Pornographers. She has also released two solo records and is just wrapping up production on her third album. She stopped by the show yesterday to talk about the new New Pornos record Brill Bruisers and to perform a couple originals.

I love the sound of her new song “Song in C-Minor.”

And from her 2011 album Bright and Vivid, she performed the song “Turn a Light On.”

Year After Year
Yesterday on the show, Victoria alt-folky-countryish-indie rock band Hawk and Steel stopped by to perform a couple songs and talk about their set  at VIC Fest this Saturday, Day Stage at 3PM.

The boys performed a song they are currently working on as an upcoming 7-inch single called “Year After Year.” It just might be the best slow jam of 2014!

Hawk and Steel then performed a song called “David and Katie.” The song is the fictional tale of a couple who rob a bank to get the money they need to leave their small town life behind.  But is it a fictional tale? Lead singer Peter Gardner knew a kid in highschool who actually robbed a bank on Salt Spring Island.

Good times.  Jon Middleton (Jon & Roy) sent me his new solo record.  Always such a pleasant listen… new Jon Middleton is pretty folky and very Vancouver Island.
