Toronto’s Pup have a new record that came out at the end of May…it is on my to-do list of records to get to. They come out so fast an furiously now it’s hard to listen to all the hyped stuff, let alone everything else. I’m still digesting Carseat Headrest and Modern Baseball oh and Band of Horses! Sheesh…then the sea of emails from up-and-coming bands asking for attention.

I like Pup…their 2013 s/t album lived in my purple mini-van for a summer. They remind me of FIDLAR in all the best ways. (especially the song DVP)

They’re back Vancouver for a show at the Cobalt on November 21st, then the next night in Victoria at Lucky Bar.

Vancouver’s White Lung are getting all the hype for their fourth album Paradise (out now on Domino Records). The album has already hit the lists of of “best of 2016 (so far)” for all the major music blogs. They have been nominated for the Polaris Prize and they’ll be around Vancouver this weekend for the Levitation Festival.

They were in New York City recently and stopped by the studio for Sirius XMU. There they did a cover of the Guns N’ Roses song “Used to Love Her.”

Happy Friday!

My wife ordered some furniture from a woodworker in Valemount called Rustic Mountain Tables…and they delivered a bench and coffee table yesterday. We love them so much.

Here are a few new songs showing up this week on The Zone for you to put an ear out for.

Ms. Brody Dalle has a new record out now called Diploid Love.  She’ll be in Vancouver for a show on Friday, May 23rd at Venue. My homeboy Jon Williams will have an interview so maybe there will be some audio for you next week.

Brody Dalle talks to the Toronto Star about caravanning a tour with husband, Queens of the Stone Age principle, Josh Homme, their kids, and their bands!

We get a bus and we’re the family bus. We’re the Hommes. It’s exhausting, but it’s awesome. I wouldn’t have it any other way. There’s no time off. Get up at 6 a.m., do the family thing until sound check, play a show, go out afterward, get up at 6 a.m. It’s the best thing ever. It’s everything.”

Fun song, good energy, love the message!

Manchester Orchestra put out a big, meat-and-potatoes rock record called Cope. Chris Freeman talking to the Dallas Observer talks about the bands evolving hard rock sound.

It is a completely different band now than when we first started. We changed members and we just started getting heavier and heavier. We grew as songwriters and musicians. We just sort of began to hone our craft very well. The sound evolves on each album.”

A couple Vancouver rock and rollers for you to end the post.  Vancouver’s White Lung. Hard working punk rock.  We’ve had the chance to see them in Victoria a few times. The most recent time that I can remember was when they opened for Fucked Up as part of Rifflandia.

So.Much.Hype….looking forward to their album Deep Fantasy.

New song is called “Face Down.”

JPNGRLS are another Vancouver rock band.  Kind of a bratty style the reminds me of Hollerado or PUP. Had the chance to meet them when they came to Victoria in March to open for Mounties at Sugar Nightclub.

The Vancouver punks White Lung are getting ready to release a new 7-inch single on November 5th (Deranged Records).  The A-side is called “Blow it South” and its a real shit-kicker.

Pitchfork says the song “is a relentless aural beating laced with loopy metal riffs that bind the quartet’s all-everything-all-the-time rage to Way’s typically predatory melodies.”  Spin calls it a “dark and clanging, a moody shit-kicker about power struggles.”

I don’t know who to believe? Can’t they both be right?

Open Relationship
Calgary’s annual music festival Sled Island released their line-up today.   Spin magazine talks about some of the major highlightsI scanned the lineup to try to track down some Victoria connections.  One band that jumped out was Victoria’s Open Relationship.

This local punker group recently picked up their second “M” Award for fave hardcore band.  I hope they utilize that uke on the next record…or better yet, I can bring The Zone’s ukulele down to the studio and we can create the Wall of Ukes.

Their 2012 DIY 7-inch is called Born Weird.  Its bratty and raw, I love the title track.  Its how I imagine Madelyn growing up (except right now she is concerned with being pretty, but she watches more Disney than maybe is healthy).  But the “I don’t want to brush my hair” line stands out to me for sure.

The line-up is pretty groovy. Lots of bands I want to see… I liked that Vancouver’s White Lung is in the mix.

Then I started poking around at some of the other bands whose names I’ve read on the blogs and music zines… and one that I enjoyed was form Miami.  Torche.

Its bad to stereotype, but when I think of Miami, I don’t think of music like this.

For one thing, the black hoodie and denim vest combo with a beard would be too much in the heat.  I guess everything is air-conditioned there, so you could just stay inside and be hard-as-fuck all you want.

Pitchfork says that one of their strengths is their ability to skirt the pop line with their sludgey grunge.  An example they shared was this beaut from 2008, “Healer.”

Go with thy self.

We were debating the merits of an article posted on Spinner last week.  The author made the case that the Japandroids are more hype than substance and didn’t really get the adulation.  The author had some points, but in the end Tiemen from Talk’s Cheap Record Shop on Pandora said that the Japandroids are not the best band ever, nor the best band out of Vancouver.  Because the best band out of Vancouver is White Lung.

Savage.  Propulsive 80s style hardcore. These chicks (and dude) wail!

Their 2012 LP Sorry was just half a point away from getting Best New Music’d by Pitchfork.  The Vancouver punkers travel the land playing DIY style ragers.  Most recently they were in Europe where they packed along a 7-inch single.  As much as I love the record, man this single is solid.  The A-side :”Two of You” is good but the flip “Hunting holiday” is my new favourite song.

White Lung – “Hunting Party”

And here is side 1, track 1 from Sorry.

White Lung was part of that Rifflandia punk rock night at Soprano’s with Fucked Up.  I was already jealous of you SOB’s that hit that show… now twice as much.  They would have been new to me then…but maybe I would have been blown away a month and half earlier and had White Lung in my life sooner.

My next party will be Sunday, November 11th at Lucky Bar.  I am building my war chest full of bangers and modern rock remixes to be just one cog in a great machine of music.
