japandroids-photo-3-webThe CBC has a story today about the changing times…. maaaaaan. The Hive Creative Labs are shutting down.  Its not all bad…  One of the Principles, Colin Stewart is moving part of the operation to Victoria!

Many a quality record was recorded at The Hive including the Japandroids most excellent Post Nothing and Celebration Rock. And for that, my heart will always be fond of Hive.

I never knew the guys.  My band never got too far into the recording realm before we called it quits… and my days at CiTR ended in 2003…right around the time that Hive had settled on a mailing address in Burquitlam.

My first memories of The Hive is when I found out that P:ano were recording out in Burquitlam…. and like, nothing interesting ever happens in Burquitlam.  That was neat to this suburban snot nosed kid from Coquitlam (get it… Burnaby + Coquitlam = Burquitlam).  Their earliest stuff was out on Hive-Fi Records (which I think is Hive).  As the story goes, back then, Hive wasn’t a physical place, Colin Stewart recorded wherever, like his basement… The later stuff, like Brigadoon (Mint Records), I think was recorded in the lawless border region between Coquitlam and Burnaby, but I don’t have the liner notes in front of me.

Here’s a P:ano cut from 2002’s The Den (Hive-Fi & Zum Records).

and the notes to this 2004 cut credit Colin Stewart and Hive Studios.

The studio is closing after a long list of BC’s notable and less so artists have passed through.  Colin Stewart is moving his production to Saanich and Jesse Gander is off to Rain City Records in Vancouver.

Breaking bad-meth
So how about that Breaking Bad finale last night?

I was reading in Spin about one of the songs used…a sorta forgotten gem from the British group Badfinger.

One of the final scenes involved a song called “Baby Blue.”

It was a nice song. Fit the vibe.  The band themselves have a tragic story.  I think that back story adds to the gravity of the final episode of Breaking Bad.

OK… so “Baby Blue,” Blue Sky meth, I get it….but in Spin they were talking about using other blue-ish type songs on the soundtrack, like Tommy James and The Shondells‘ “Crystal Blue Persuasion.”  Now there is a 1969 song I can get behind!

It didn’t take long to find this beauty cover by Morcheeba.

and here’s the original for you. YOUTUBE

Minor Obsession: Lorde “Team”

I had a chance to front-to-back Lorde’s Pure Heroine… believe the hype, I enjoyed my listen.

I immediately gravitated to a cut called “Team.”  Turns out its the next single

I dig it because its a grouchy old person song… and though I am not “old” I did come up with music at a time when it wasn’t all sunshine and Mowgli’s and empowering Facebook share memes.

The Positive trend, i get it… man, the path your happiness is through you doing whatever you can to make yourself happy, or whatever…but I feel like the music that constantly play, it says nothing to me about my life.

It does trip me out that i am related to a song by a 16-year-old teenager from New Zealand.  Whatever, good song.

royal canoe
Royal Canoe started the month of September in Victoria and I am a little disappointed because I am late to the party.

Their record Today We’re Believers came across my desk at the radio factory and I am feeling the single “Exodus of the Year.”

Lots of positive hype for this band from the City of Muddy Waters.

Named a “Sleeper Hit” on KCRW.
Best of CMJ from The New York Times and Consequence of Sound
Support slot for Alt-J’s tour

Lots of good things.

OK, let’s do it…

someone
“Tell me about your boyfriend, did he ever swim to the end?”

A beauty line from Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin‘s new Polyvinyl release Fly By Wire.

Man, I want a Nightwater Girlfriend so badly!

I love the light melodic indie pop of SSLYBY.  The song “Harrison Ford” worms right into your head.  Punch it Chewie!

I forgot how much I liked SSLYBY until I saw “Harrison Ford” bubbling up on the blogs…somewhere at home I still have the Springfield, Missouri band’s 2005 record Broom.

PANGEA! we used to be together…why did we have to drift apart?”

Whoa… that song is like a geological metaphor for my relationship with SSLYBY.

dead-language
I can get behind some straight ahead modern punk.  The band from Toronto is called The Flatliners.  their forth record is Dead Language and its out now on New Damage Records.

SPIN says: “”Caskets Full” eulogizes “the dead friendships you know” by delivering crisp riffs and gruff vocals bolstered by call-and-response screams.”

Faded_Remix_Cover
Another Bear Mountain post?  Yup.

I saw this song bouncing around the intertron today and immediately liked it.  Toronto producers Natural Animal put their pixie dust all over one my favourites off Vancouver based Bear Mountain’s XO record, “Faded.”

Young Galaxy will be in Victoria on Wednesday, September 25th for a show at Lucky Bar.  The band was up for a Polaris Music Prize but ultimately lost out to conscientious rockers Godspeed You! Black Emperor.  Who knows… maybe that’s for the best? I punched up Young Galaxy’s new single “Crying My Heart Out” on the radio and people called up all grouchy bemoaning how horrible this song is.  Weird…. I hear this song and I wanna make out.  When Catherine McCandless sings “and its hard, when I’m playing ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart'”… I melt.

I’m an old man. I have a parent/teacher talk at some weird hour Thursday morning…. but godspeed me! Imma try to be there tomorrow night.  haters goin’ hate.

CHYEA… I got a Tea Time jam for you.  Randomly stumbled on this band Vaults outta London Town.  This blog says MYSTERIES!

twin forks
Have you ever sat around your office punching up old music video’s from 2001 and thought “I wonder what happened to that chick in the ‘Screaming Infidelities‘ music video?”

Actually… what happened to Chris Carrabba?

Maybe he read that Mumford & Sons were going on hiatus and charged into the breach?

The Dashboard Confessional frontman has a new band called Twin Forks.  The Georgia Straight says the music has a celebratory feel.  Twin Forks will roll into Victoria on November 25th for a show at Club 9one9.

Now have a listen to this!

No the band from Echo Park

No the band
No the band, from Echo Park, Los Angeles, California came to Victoria.  Their first ever Canadian show was at 3PM on a Friday.  There were not too many people in attendance as the doors of Rifflandia had just opened.   For those of us that started our party early, we had a chance to see a pretty decent, moody, indie band.

No’s most popular song on soundcloud is called “Stay With Me.”  The song was featured on the TV show Suits the other day.

It would be pretty easy to draw a parallel to Brooklyn’s The National.  It has that gravity and atmosphere for sure.  Here is another song I liked off their ep.  This one reminds me of the Airborne Toxic Event, or even Atomic Tom.
