Blitzen Trapper have released a song off their upcoming record, Live Harvest. The album is destined for Record Store Day on April 18th. Live Harvest is a cover record where the band preforms Neil Young’s Harvest, front-to-back.

The record was recorded live at Portland’s Doug Fir Lounge.

“I think we all knew the record before we even tried to play it,” says frontman Eric Earley. “It’s one of those records that takes us to that place of comfort and nostalgia like the Dukes of Hazzard or a Chevy Impala.  It just feels good to play it.”

If you’re a fan of Neil Young, Blitzen Trapper, or cover songs in general…have a listen on Stereogum.

Hawk and Steel

Victoria’s Hawk and Steel released their new single “David and Katie.” The song is from their upcoming record Anywhere But Here which comes out on June 23rd. The song tells the morose alt-country fable of…. David and Katie. neat.

It is the studio cut from a song we first heard close to a year ago when I was on The Zone.

Twisted fingers and happy hearts… Mike Edel released a new song on his soundcloud the other day called “Blue Above The Green.” He says the song is about spring time.

Mike Edel’s new record is called India, Seattle. The Victoria folkster is hitting the road with fellow Island squad Towers & Trees. We’ll get a chance to see Mike Edel on April 9th in Vancouver at The Biltmore and the following nights in Victoria at The Roxy.

And let’s check in with Towers and Trees. Check out this beauty cover of Lana Del Rey’s “West Coast” recorded on The Zone with my best English mate Jon Williams.

April 9th? Is that a Thursday? Maybe I could go to that?

Sufjan_Stevens_-_Carrie_&_Lowell

Downloaded the new Sufjan Stevens record Carrie & Lowell last night. It is a perfect folk record. (Pitchfork review here)

The record follows his fractured relationship with his mother Carrie. How their relationship shaped him and how her death effects him.  Talking to Pitchfork Sufjan says,  “This is not my art project; this is my life.”

The language and poetry is crushing. Exceptionally beautiful. I love the line in this song near the end, “My brother had a daughter, A beauty that she brings. Illumination.”

As dark as the record often is, you have these uplifting moments.

Talking about the nature of art on his blog:

“To objectify art is to measure its commercial value and squander its transcendental powers of benevolence. Reciprocity demeans art; or, rather, it functions to incarcerate its powers, to judge it for its charity. Like putting Mother Theresa on trial, or in prison, for the crime of compassion. On the contrary, perfect art, as a perfect gift (without ulterior motive, without gain, without compensation) courageously gives itself over to the world asking nothing in return.”

Sufjan Stevens will be in Vancouver on June 9th for a show at the Orpheum.
