BAM Remix
Freaking Cool.  Bear Week has begun on The Zone at 91-3.  One week dedicated to the mighty BEAR!  I recently asked Foster The People’s Mark Foster if he had a Bear Story…and it was like he kept one in his pocket, waiting for the day a radio DJ would ask him.

Starting to get the summer vibe on Vancouver Island.  The weekend was a huge one. It felt like the whole city was sitting on a patio, out on the trails, or riding a bike.

My weekend began at the USS show. The band performed a high school concert out at Stelly’s during their nooner and then they performed a 19+ show at Club 9one9.  The radio station tapped me to DJ the opening set which was a lot of fun.

Ash and Jason were exceptionally generous with their time and made sure that anyone looking for a picture or autograph were given an opportunity.  Both shows were packed rooms of passionate fans. If you have stumbled on this blog from outside of Canada and are wondering what’s up… USS are a Canadian group form Toronto.  They have at least a half-dozen modern rock singles that have been played radio across Canada for a few years now.  Man, when they launched into “Yin Yang” or “This Is The Best” the party went sub-atomic. Have a look at the pictures!

This exceptional weather calls for some bright summer music.  Lindsay is a record promoter from New York, and she sent over some fun nu-disco and house tunes.

“Baby show me something I ain’t ready for…”

wild cub
Time to hit play on some radio hits that are resonating on modern rock radio in the USA but not so much north of the 49th parallel (or in my case, just south of the 49th… what are we, the 48th?).

Let’s start with a group called Wild Cub and their song “Thunder Clatter.”  The band is from Nashville, signed to Mom + Pop, and their record is called Youth.

***

Next up… the dark pop/soul of Somekindawonderful.  Band is originally from Cleveland but now centered out of Los Angeles. Getting played on the radio all over the place.

***

Off to New Jersey, band is called Brick + Mortar.  The song getting featured on the radio is called “Locked in a Cage.”

records
My favourite record of 2014 (so far) is Cloud NothingsHere and Nowhere Else.  I played it for my 6-year-old daughter Madelyn…and she was not into it as much.

Maybe you are feeling the same way about the new Cloud Nothings.  I know I don’t.  I AM a big fan.

Solids
Caleb from the Zone’s Creative Writing team sent me this Montreal band called Solids.  Says they “rip ass.”

The’ll be at Sled Island in Calgary this summer…but it would be a lot cooler if they came to Victoria for Rifflandia.

Australia’s Kim Churchill is criss-crossing Canada and he’ll be stopping down in Victoria on April 15th for a show at Lucky Bar.

The man is promoting his new record Silence/Win and the feature song you’re hearing on The Zone is called “Window to the Sky.”

SF-Giants-Logo
I had a chance to chat with Bear Hands lead singer Dylan Rau.  We yapped about the band’s punk rock origins in Connecticut and New York City before trying to get to the bottom of the Much Mega Hit, “Giants.”

Bleachers remix
Big sounding remix of Bleachers “I Wanna Get Better.”  Vince Clarke of Depche Mode fame synthses it right out.  He has created bouncy head bopping dance cut that keeps many of the original cut’s core elements.  But I am also hearing industrial beats and sounds.

Ray
Ray LaMontagne‘s 5th record is out on May 6th.  The album is called Supernova.

Ray travelled down to Nashville to work with The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach.  I also read an article by one industry type who short-listed the song “Supernova” as a potential “Song of The Summer” 2014 edition.

It is a pretty song.  Song of the Summer?  I don’t feel that yet…but I do feel the warmth of summer in the song.  As a sometimes Wedding DJ in Victoria, I hear a very beautiful potential first dance song.  Its a bright, bouncy song, with lyrics that I think will resonate with the romantics out there.

Also… I say Supernova all the time, would it be weird if I admitted to hitting play for the first time on this song based strictly on the title?

frozen
I have a couple remixes of Queen‘s “Under Pressure,” a silly spin on the Frozen soundtrack jammer “Let It Go,” and I think we should talk Cloud Nothings.

Another perfect day in the Garden City…maybe not summer weather yet, but flirting with it at times.  The Mrs. and I headed off to Honda to look at a bigger ride.  Our growing horde is bursting out of the Civic. I like looking at new cars.

Rolling into the radio factory to a sea of emails. One song that captured my attention was from an LA producer/DJ called Touch Tone.  He posted a remix of the Queen/David Bowie joint “Under Pressure.”  I like to throw the original down during my DJ sets when I can, this remix will give me so many more opportunities to work it into a dance party!

Weirdly, not the only “Under Pressure” remix I received today.  Check out this punchier nu-disco take from Juno Ray.

Kid One and I were watching Frozen for the 37th time the other day.  During the big song from Elsa, “Let It Go,” I was feeling some James Hetfield from her performance….so we started thrashing around the living room…the next day at the radio factory I tried to put the James Hetfield “Let it Go” to tape.  Here you go.

Cloud Nothings
So this happened yesterday and I pray it ain’t no foolin’!  July 4th has one of my all time bands, Cloud Nothings, coming to Victoria for a Friday night show at Upstairs. Wow.

Also their new record came out yesterday, and believe the hype, it is outstanding.

Lastly… there is a Viking Exhibition coming to the Royal BC Museum in May.  Wonderful.  I’m going to hit that for sure, you ought to too.
