fatelvis

So you’re going to the Pacific National Exhibition and you just don’t have time to mess around. I feel you.  Here are the three best things to eat at the 2016 PNE.

01) The Legendary Pickle Dog from Chicky’s Chicken. It’s a hot dog, in a pickle, then corn dogged. I enjoy mine with mustard, the kid likes it with ketchup.

02) The Fat Elvis from Rocky Point Ice Cream. It’s chocolate ice cream, banana, peanut butter, jam all smushed in a brioche bun and grilled. Messy. Good.

03) Delicious beer from the Craft Beer Fest. All that walking and show home viewing will make you thirsty. Visit the Craft Beer Festival for a tasty beer brewed right here in British Columbia.

Lately my favourite beer has been from Richmond’s Fuggles & Warlock. D&D fantastical branding, yummy Strawberry Wit.

The next BEST time to hit the PNE will be Tuesday, August 30th for Monster Truck.

And now, here’s a picture of The Sheepdog who played the CFOX presents show on the 23rd.

Better Call Becky with the good hair….

Beyonce released her 6th album on Saturday night. It began with an HBO special for her visual album. On the record Beyonce is dealing marital breakdown, infidelity, sadness…and then reconciliation, healing and empowerment. There is a lot going on with the record sonically.
Also a huge selection of samples, features and guest writing credits… The song “Hold Up” has Beyonce riffing off an old Yeah Yeah Yeah’s lyric from their song “Maps”, that was changed up a tiny bit in a 2011 tweet from Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend.

One of her songs features the ferocious guitar of Jack White and a sample of Led Zeppelin. Check out “Don’t Hurt Yourself.” It’s a rock and roll jammer.

glitter rose

Glitter Rose found me on Facebook and sent over a song for us to check out from her record Outlaw In Love.

Adam from the Jeff O’Neil Show walked in while hacking together a blog post and was like, “oh what is the guitar rocker? Old school Alanis vibes”

Then he was impressed that I knew how to “embed into my posts.”

It’s not that impressive, WordPress does all the heavy lifting.

me and Coral in Vegas

Coral and I are going to back to Las Vegas in June and I am amped! It’ll be our first time there together since we got married in 2009.

I’ve looking up some fun places ( I hope) to check out. I’ve been to Vegas a few times, Coral has been twice, so we’ve done *most* of the more affordable tourist stuff. Coral wants to see a show (we’re not sure what) and I’ll see if any touring bands are in town to check out.

A big part of our trip will be rest and sun. We’ve been going pretty hard for the past year and Coral has been hustling as a stay-at-home Mom…so pool, sun, palm trees and cocktails are priority one. Sweating on the gulag march down the strip in June is low on the list.

I do like to seek out some fun and interesting places to enjoy a pint. I find the best places in Vegas tend to be downtown. Away from the Strip, Las Vegas is like any other city. There are some hip joints serving up good food and drink for a reasonable price when you get away from the tourists.

Here are three places I am excited to check out this go around.

01) The Griffin (511 Fremont Street, Downtown)

I’ve been to this place before and it was pretty groovy. You get a decent cocktail and a normal American price. It was the first time I had drank anywhere in Vegas that had a good beer list. Good energy, good vibe, and not a far wander away from the tourist part of the Fremont Strip. (man, I sound like Jim Benning, The Griffin is real good. Real good.)

Happy Hour (Su-Th 10-11PM) is a good idea:  Well drinks are $3. Hamm’s beer is $1. Either one will keep you warm by the fireplace.

02) Beer Garden (1 S. Main Street, Downtown)

Never been here…so I am going to check this place based on the hype. Drink beer, outside on a real grass lawn. I like that idea.

03) Park on Fremont (506 Fremont, Downtown)

Looks like Coral and I will start a little bar crawl at Main then work our way down Fremont to the other end of the strip (and likely duck into at least one tourist place for a sugary cocktail or an ABC for a tall can).

Park shows up on a bunch of lists for having a chief patio (and good beer selection). I love the desert heat and I love patio beers. Can’t wait to check this place out.

Happy Hour (M-F 4P-7P) doesn’t suck: The Fremont East watering hole is big on bar-food snacks. The Mac & Cheese Balls, Chicken Bar Bites, Garbage Fries, fried pickles, and chicken wings are all each $5. Drinks include $3 well cocktails, $4 domestic draft beers, and $5 draft beers.

This one is kinda cheating because it is Fremont AT Las Vegas Boulavard….but you know we ARE TOURISTS….so it’s OK if every moment isn’t some authentic life experience trouncing around back streets of Vegas.

We’ll also hit the Outlets I’m sure. And Blondie’s legendary all you can drink Happy Hour. Coral wants to wander down to Mandalay Bay at some point to go to Border Grill.

Coral also likes her Caesars which in Amurika are called Bloody Marys. I’m sure we’ll find something interesting (or silly).

Oh right! Neon Graveyard! Coral wanted to go here. I think this will be part of the Downtown day.

and maybe a ghost town tour?

When I think of a Vegas song… I hear the beginning (about a minute in) part of this Chainsmokers song as the soundtrack to one of those “Vegas Party” video montages.

Last Gang

Astrocolor is a musical collective from Victoria who have come together for a nice Christmas vibe this year. Their debut record from Last Gang is called Lit Up…and it is the perfect dubbed out easy listen to throw on the turntable with a mulled wine and your indoor electrical fireplace “crackling.”

The bio reads like an all-star team of Victoria musicians.

Lit Up was co-produced by Astrocolor and Colin Stewart (Black Mountain, Dan Mangan, Ladyhawk, AC Newman). While primarily instrumental, it also features choice vocal moments from a collection of the band’s friends – Kandle, Rykka, Antonia Freybe-Smith, and Abi Rose.

Based in Victoria, BC, Astrocolor is Andrew Poirier (guitar), Anand Greenwell (saxophone), Chris Mackenzie (drums), William Farrant (bass), and Piers Henwood (guitar). With additional programming and instrumentation by Matt Lyall, the Righteous Rainbows of Togetherness, and Jason Cook.

This cut features Antonia who we know from so many great bands in Victoria. Most notalby Jets Overhead.

And they have some beauty instrumentals…..

Getting some good reviews too!

David-Bowie-Blackstar

The new David Bowie song “Blackstar” is a 10 minute jazz-tronica adventure. The lead single from Bowie’s 25th record comes out on January 8th, 2016. His 69th birthday.

Legend says that back in 2014 David Bowie was invited to a little jazz lounge in New York City’s West Village. A place called the 55 Bar. Bowie went there in 2014 to check out Donny McCaslin’s quartet of exploratory jazz. He sat near the stage, enjoyed the performance and ghosted without a word to anyone. 10 days later he asked for Donny and the drummer to join him in the studio and away they went on what would be “Blackstar.”

The almost 69-year-old artist was inspired by a diverse range of folks for this record. Kendrick Lamar, Death Grips, Board of Canada…and even features percussion from LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy.

Yesterday on Drex Live, I was talking to Drex about the new music and we both agreed that the work is challenging. But then a listener form LA named Isaac called up to say that song is a “masterpiece” threaded with imagery that talks about theology, good, evil, and the anti-Christ.

First off….the whole concept of the five-pointed star is important.

He then specifically mentions how interesting the three crucified scarecrows are to the music video.

He says the whole concept of the video talks about god and the anti-Christ.

X AMBASSADORS.png

X Ambassadors stopped by CFOX’s Ugly Grey Box Studio to perform their #1 Modern Rock hit “Renegades.” They also talked a bit about growing up friends in Ithaca and the first song they played together as kids was a Chili Peppers’ song. Neat.

Oh I wanted to share this video with you. I made this other day. I was putting my 22-month-old to bed and we were reading one of his favourite books. He started listing off the things he saw in the pictures, so I recorded him because he is cute as fuck.
