Cover Songs long weekend on the Zone. Happy Easter friends.
Dear Dear friend of the show, Vince Vaccaro wanted to be part of the action this weekend, so he was kind enough to dust off his harmonica and hit record on his tape deck to lay down one of his all-time personal favourites.
“Here you go man… I sat down all day and did this version of one of my fav songs… its Heart Of Gold by Neil Young.” Thanks Vince!

Bouncing around the internet today is a “leak” of the Lollapalooza line-up. Maybe its right, maybe not…but I was interested to see that Vancouver’s Wake Owl would be on the bill.
I first found their “Wild Country” ep last summer trolling Alan Cross’ blog. I still listen to those 5 songs pretty regular. I made the point to see them at last year’s Rifflandia.
The band recently wrapped showcasing in Austin at SXSW. It would make sense that they got on someone’s radar and will now head to Chicago this summer for the big festival.
The band will be announcing their tour plans…. soon. LOOK OUT!
Let’s go back and listen to that first great song… “Wild Country.”

Last night, (now) local rockers Zerbin launched their new ep, Take Your Heart, at Lucky Bar.
Zerbin had a massive set. These guys shine on the radio but they go super nova on stage. Lucky Bar is not a big place, with a little cramped stage, but the guy bring what feels like a festival or arena show.
Encore time…. Zerbin does a beautiful a cappella “Human.” (orignally a song by The Killers.) Then they dive into Sufjan Steven’s “Chicago.”
Sam Thom Photography captured it.
and the original…. because its amazing.

British bands are often hilarious with their hyperbole. Let’s check out Birmingham’s Swim Deep. Reading in the Guardian, lead singer Austin Williams said, “I can’t see anything that compares to us.”
Well, only about every half decent modern indie band…. but ok, luckily I like what I hear.
The latest single off their upcoming record, Where the Heaven Are We (July 29th, RCA/Chess Club), is called “She Changes the Weather” … maybe not unlike Lake Victoria, she changes the weather in Africa!
I like this. Very beautiful. The Guardian has another article about the music scene in Birmingham in general… Swim Deep are part of it.

Today we’ll get started with a very pretty and romantic song from Washington D.C.’s Misun. I’ve heard their style described as “aquawave.” Cool description. Aaron Blum at Indie shuffle says aquawave, “offers a mix between indie pop and hip-hop with a beachy vibe.” Neat.

What time is it? I should sleep… but before tucking in for the night, I made a mixtape.
Mixcloud: Mixtape >> Sasquatch Festival 2013 Mix
Last year I made a mix for my wife to get her amped on Sasquatch. This year, neither of us is (are?) going… but the rage burns inside… so here is another mixtape. I limit it to 20 songs so its a manageable listen but will still take you just over an hour. So make a date with your headphones.
A favourite?
oh man, tough call, I like all these jams. Maybe Wake Owl…or that Youth Lagoon song. Actually, I also really enjoy Surfer Blood. The Holy Ghost! song does contain an amazing use of the name “Imogen.”
Ok, have fun… if you got a favourite please leave a message. If I have criminally omitted YOUR favourite Sasquatch 2013 song, please share it with me.
Thank you for taking the time to enjoy music. Go with yourself.

Vancouver blues-rockers Head of The Herd sent a new single to radio today.
The Rain City duo ht the studio with Ggggarth Richardson, noted for being a West Coast leafs fan (gross), and the man who produced the first Rage Against The Machine record (plus about a billion other modern hard rocking beauties).
Head of the Herd enlisted friend-of-the-show Jasmin Parkin of Mother Mother to duet on this cut, the title track for their upcoming album, By This Time Tomorrow (June 4th, RMP/Indie).
Quality jam… I love it.

I had a busy but fun and rewarding weekend. Lots of DJing. First at Sugar in support of the Rage and Tool tribute bands at Sugar. A share of the profits were donated to Madelyn’s preschool… thank you for coming!
Saturday was petting zoo with some pre-school friends, Beacon Hill Park (the merry-go-round is savage and wonderful), picking up a Vancouver Millionaires jersey, and more DJing!
Sunday had Madelyn and I heading up to Merridale Estate Cidery. My friend Jess was looking for some wedding playlists just in-case a wedding party decided to not hire entertainment, or bring an iPod but THEN decide a party would be nice (apparently it happens)…so if you get married at Merridale this summer… there is a back-up!
Such a perfect afternoon for a brunch, then some exploration on the farm.
Our soundtrack for the overlander up-and-down the Malahat… Born Ruffians!
Cruising with Madelyn at altitude, with the sunroof open and Born Ruffians jangling away was the best weekend EVAR!

That is a picture of one of Madelyn’s most loved stuffies…. “Sam The Meerkat.”

Halifaxian rockers In-Flight Safety last put out a record in 2009, We Are An Empire, My Dear. They then toured the country with friends of the show Said The Whale….but since that time, it has been moderately quiet on the In-Flight front until today. A new single from an upcoming record due this summer.
The song bouncing around is called “Destroy.”
A jangly, reverb heavy, darkish indie rocker.
