I’ve had Angel Olsen‘s “Shut Up Kiss Me” on heavy rotation at home. Her album My Woman is so solid.

This week she ended up on Hrishikesh Hirway’s Song Exploder so I had to listen!

This episode just made me love her more.

Angel Olsen is on tour but no Vancouver show. SHAME!

02/18/17 Seattle – Neptune Theatre

El-P and Killer Mike are Run The Jewels. They’ve announced a new record called RTJ3 out on January 13th. Damn, January 2017 is looking stacked for new music.

The artwork for the new record is above. RTJ went back to the pistol and fist and say this about the art: “For us, the RTJ1 hands were about ‘taking what’s yours’ – your world, your life, your attitude. The RTJ2 hands were wrapped in bandages, signifying injury and healing, which for us represented the growth in ideas and tone of that album. For RTJ3 the bandages are off, the chain is gone and the hands have been transformed into gold. For us this represents the idea that there is nothing to take that exists outside of yourself. You are the jewel.”

New record, so much hype, and a tour! They’ll be in the Pacific Northwest for a series of sold out shows in February.

Kelowna hard rockers The Wild have a new music video to check out the. The song is called “Ready to Roll.”  The song comes from their upcoming album Wild At Heart which is out in February.

Lead singer guy Dylan Villain said in Revolver: “When we made our first video, it was over the top & really turned a lot of heads. So we knew when we were making this one, we had to really step it up. From lighting guitars on fire, jumping off cliffs, guns, random explosions, excessive pyro, playing our instruments on top of a moving RV while ripping down a desert highway & then actually blowing up that RV with explosives…I’d say we did alright.”

They have matching denim vests.

That Cheat Codes song “Sex” is a popular one when I’m DJing. Must get requested every week.

The LA based electro group teamed up with some heavy hitters in David Guetta and Robin Schulz. The song is called “Shed a Light.” The press release says, Underlined by a catchy, driving beat and slowly building, beautifully anthemic strings, “Shed a Light” shines its perpetual, crystal clear light to counter the impending darkness. More than anything the deeply moving song sends a message of hope, urging fans to heed the call of our hearts.

Awww,  I need to answer the call of my heart more often.

Party stays in LA. This artist is called Phi Nix. She’s originally from Holland but brought her sound to Southern California.

This song is called “Loyal.” The press says, She’s got sweet jazzy vocals over subtle trap and future bass inspired synths.

cloud-nothings

Cloud Nothings new record is called Life Without Sound and comes out on January 27th.

They shared another song off the record called “Internal World.”

You’ve probably heard that it rains a shit ton in Vancouver. But man, this fall it has rained an exceptional amount, even by our soggy standards! Here’s a pic from a weekend walk with my youngest. It’s special because it rained so much he actually wore his hat AND hood. He usually tears hats and hoods off his head.

Go with yourself.

I don’t have a lot for you tonight….but it is Friday and I wanted to share something for you to help you get after it this weekend before I run out the door.

Basically I trolled DJ Primitive’s soundcloud feed and cherry picked a couple. He’s such a stud.

Happy Friday and go with yourself.

july-talk

Co-fronters Leah Fay and Peter Dreimanis from the Toronto rock & roll band July Talk were in Vancouver today in front of their second sold out show at The Commodore Ballroom.

July Talk have been piling on fans and praise since the release of their 2012 self-titled debut. The band’s live show is something people talk about, they scored a Juno Award in 2014, and in 2016 they followed up July Talk with Touch.

The record has already smashed out two Much Mega hits in Canada. “Push + Pull” and now “Picturing Love.” “Picturing Love” is an interesting song that talks about human relationships, sexuality, and how they are influenced by our addiction to screens and pornography.

Before July Talk, Peter ran a video production company in Toronto called Vulture Culture Films with Josh Warburton (he is the bass player in July Talk). They worked with other bands like Arkells, Born Ruffians, and Tokyo Police Club on their music videos. With July Talk, Peter and Josh (and the rest of the band) were able to really put their creative vision into play.  The music video for “Picturing Love” is an interesting music that is diving into the themes of screens and male gaze.

Peter says the video for picturing love came about “at a time where Black Mirror had come out and we were really talking about a lot of technology and how a lot of technology is meant to bring us closer together but sometimes it pushes us further apart.”

Leah adds, ” the song is also about pornography, westernized Hollywood pornography and how it is effing up the way people sleep together and relate to each other. ”

The song and video have a dark edge to it, but in the end I felt that it ultimately has an uplifting message.
