warpaint

Last night was pretty chill at Match despite a thrilling game 5 National League Divisional Series win by the Dodgers, and the San Diego Chargers actually holding on to a win.

I was able to slide through a bunch of new songs on my set and was really feeling a few cuts so I’ll share them now.

Warpaint‘s 3rd record, Head’s Up, came out at the end of September. The hype for this band is strong. That band tends to traffic in sleepy moody indie rock. I like “New Song” because it brightens up their traditional sound just enough to punch through in a big pub.

Glass Animals recently played a show in Vancouver that sadly I was unable to make!

The band recently sent over their music video for “Season 2, Episode 3,” but it’s the radio jammer “Life Itself” that I really enjoy.

Kaytranada, so hot right now. He won the Polaris Prize…that’s kinda neat!

I like this Chance the Rapper remix edit thing. Good times.

Happy Friday!   back at Match tonight after 10PM till late.

Friend of the show Jeff K sent over Andy Shauf. He said, ” have you listened to this album?”

The Regina raised singer is in town tomorrow and Saturday at Fox Cabaret in Mount Pleasant. Sunday Funday in Victoria at Sugar.

Our share song is “Early to the Party.” I’ll quote the Georgia Straight talking about the song“Early to the Party” zooms in on a girl who’s clearly never figured out that when the invitation says 8 p.m., you don’t show up until at least 9:15; over regal keys and layered strings Shauf sings “You’re the first one there, overdressed and underprepared/Standing in the kitchen, stressing out the host.”

We’re also looking forward to some new solo music from the Acres of Lions singer too! Can’t wait Jeff!

life-without-sound

Best music news of the day! Cloud Nothings are following up 2014’s most excellent Here and Nowhere Else with a record called Life Without Sound.

The record is due out on January 27th, 2017. In some of the press I’ve read of the band between records, it had sounded like they were experimenting with some new sounds and textures, but hearing the first share track…I am getting that familiar Cloud Nothings song. Pop-forward lo-fi guitar rock? Sure.

In a press release, Dylan Baldi says“Generally, it seems like my work has been about finding my place in the world. But there was a point in which I realized that you can be missing something important in your life, a part you didn’t realize you were missing until it’s there—hence the title. This record is like my version of new age music. It’s supposed to be inspiring.”

They also announced an “extensive” tour. But I guess the Pacific Northwest doesn’t count as “extensive.” Sad emoticon.

5-records
Sam Roberts Band‘s 6th studio LP, Terraform, is out on October 26th. We’re looking forward to seeing Sam Roberts Band live in Vancouver on February 7th at The Orpheum. Maybe we road trip to Ballard to see the group at the Tractor Tavern on February 8th?

I asked Sam Roberts, if we were at his place for a party drinking Fin du Monde, what are five records he’d select for the turn table. The dude happened to be beside his LP collection.

The Kinks – Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Part One
Men At Work – Business As Usual
The Clash – London Calling
Abba – Greatest Hits
Bob Dylan – Desire

Plus bonus 6th selection…a J.J. Cale record.

Vancouver rockers JAPANDROIDS took to the stage for first time in 3 years last night at The Cobalt in Vancouver. The set also featured new music that will be part of an album due later (maybe this year).

The boys in the band seemed in genuinely jovial spirits as they returned to the stage and treated the packed dive bar’s crowd. The set included 5 new songs including a song they described as their “longest and weirdest” song on the upcoming record. They also hoped it would be our favourite when this future album drops. This was the first song of the night, “Arc Of Bar.”

At one point they joked that they were “getting 1% better every song. If they play 100 songs they’ll be pretty good.”

The funny thing, the set did grow and build with each song. Here’s the set list that my friend Kirsten Grace sent me. They called a few audibles, but for the most part the night played out like this. I’ll need to get confirmation on what the ????? songs were, they played two after “House That Heaven Built.”

JAPANDROIDS continue their homestand tonight at The Cobalt and roll through toSaturday before continuing to Los Angeles.

10-11 Los Angeles, CA – The Echo
10-15 Toronto – Horseshoe Tavern
10-20 London, England – Birthdays
10-28 Brooklyn, NY – Knitting Factory
10-29 Brooklyn, NY – Knitting Factory
11-25 Mexico City, Mexico – Caradura

For those of you that have never been to Vancouver’s Cobalt on Main Street…it’s a place. Me and my buddy Tyson kept remarking to our partners, “back in the day, this place was more punk!”

My wife snapped this graffiti in the bar. I guess we’re not that original!

matinee

Vancouver rock & rollers The Matinee announced they’ll be releasing their second full-length record in early 2017. The record will be called Dancing on Your Grave. The title and lead single talks about the passing of lead singer Matt Layzell’s grandfather who had recently passed. The song is a celebration on life well lived.

The band members have been friends and making music for many year sin the Lower Mainland. This record comes after some time off from the group. Members of the band celebrated marriages, the births of children and in Matt Layzell’s case, the death of his grandfather and a breakup.

Matt says, “we were all going through big life changes. After a difficult split, I found myself disappearing on solo road trips into the wild with my dog, trying to clear my head.”

Their song focuses on the rootsy side of rock & roll and with an 80s indie jangly guitar sound. Maybe that comes from their producer Jamie Candiloro who has worked in the past with Ryan Adams and R.E.M.

Here’s some praise for the new song from my buddy Dave.

New record Dancing on Your Grave is out on February 17th, 2017 on Vancouver’s Light Organ Records.

The Chainsmokers sent a new song into Morning After. The band is at the point of their career where they post a song by the time I get it on the West Coast it has 300,000 plus spins on Youtube. They ain’t hurting for hype.

The song reminds me of their previous mega smash “Closer.” Has a similar vibe. Just chilled a bit.  Features the delightful Phoebe Ryan.

Alex and Drew write, “So we are little nervous sending out this next song only because there might be some crazy expectations but we think the song is really beautiful and Phoebe songs incredible on it so go into it with an open mind!

The song itself is about the hardships we often all face in relationships, those moments that seem like you cant possibly go any further together, but regardless you go on always sticking by your ride or die… “

Hey Chainsmokers… no soundcloud?

Happy Thursday… Go with yourself.

vince-1

Text to 2-80-CFOX yesterday, a listener wanted us to have a listen to Vince Vaccaro.

Vaccaro is a singer-songwriter from Vancouver Island. I’ve personally known Vince for a bunch of years. His style tends to be rooted in guitar rock. But he filters that through a west coast, beach living vibe.

Over the years Vince Vaccaro has had a few songs reach the radio FM airwaves in Victoria and Vancouver. His new song is called “Siren.” A moody slow burn with jangly guitars and female backing vocals from Kaitlin Jasmine.

Recently Vince Vaccaro performed at the Legends Valley Music Festival and Rifflandia.

Marty sent a tweet to CFOX asking us to check out Vancouver’s Carpenter. Oh man, I used to love Carpenter, and lead singer Dan’s previous band, All State Champion.

I have a warm nostalgia for 00’s post-hardcore. Firing up Carpenter’s new record Lifelines just blasted me with memories of tooling around Vancouver’s East Side dive bars and Logans or Lucky in Victoria.

There are a few songs off this record that first listen stood out for me.

I think I have a Carpenter t-shirt in band t-shirt storage, I better dig it out.

Let’s go back and fire up a beauty from All State Champion too…since we’re hanging out on the music blog.

Carpenter has some shows coming up. October 6th they’re at 333.

The US Presidential debate last night was highly entertaining.
