New Zealand’s premiere electro-alt modern rockers The Naked And Famous have a new single out called “Higher.”

Their third record is called Simple Forms and is out on October 14th. The album follows in the footsteps of 2011’s smash Passive Me, Aggressive You and 2013’s In Rolling Waves.

The band is now living in California and put this record together in Echo Park.

The record talks about the breakdown of the 8-year relationship between co-vocalists Thom Power and Alisa Xayalith. They said it “almost tore the band apart!”
No shit.

I can always respect people that can push through what would likely be a great personal challenge for their art.

“There’s pain and passion behind this art,” says Alisa, picking up this theme. “Pop techniques are all about maximum impact. And it’s not like this is an album of bangers but it’s the most immediate thing we’ve ever done.”

They have some shows in the Pacific Northwest this fall!

10/26 — Porltand, OR — Roseland Theater*
10/27 — Seattle, WA — Neptune Theatre*
10/28 — Vancouver, BC — The Vogue Theatre*

All those shows are with XYLØ.

Sorry….still hyping Tall Tree…but seriously music blog friends, it’s a pretty unique festival on an Island full of pretty unique experiences.

My man Nick Rassenti was there and wrote a recap for Rocktographers website.

And look at that…my little Thursday afternoon set got a mention: “a white hot set from DJ Jeremy Baker that sparked a sudden Gn’R-infused afternoon dance party.”

Give this blog post a hit if you wanna read (and see) what a pretty rustic little music festival on the wild west coast of Vancouver Island looks like.

Happy Friday! Off to Harrison Hot Springs this weekend. My old man is turning 60 and some family from Prince George and Quesnel are coming down. Lots of BBQ, beers, lake times, pool and hot springs for my kids with their cousins, uncles, aunts, grandparents, GREAT-grandparents. Good times.

Go with yourself.

My biggest “oh wow” surprise act from my too-short time up at Tall Tree last week was Nahko and Medicine For The People. The party-politico-folk act (is that genre?…I think they call it world music) from Portland was new to me.

Nahko and his band began with a talk from a person who gave a speech in both English and a native language that I couldn’t pick up, but sounded to my ignorant ear as a Coast Salish language? Right off the hop I thought, this is different….I so rarely get to hear the original languages of British Columbia outside of a museum. Then Nahko Bear launched into a beautiful and energetic set. It helped that his music came on during the high water mark during our weekend party.

Coral and I watched for a bit before heading back to our tent listening to the rest from our bed. I think I want to listen to all music that way.

Since then I’ve had the tunes embedded in my head and finally downloaded their latest record, HOKA.

There are more than a couple outstanding songs.

Another standout to me is this love song called “Tus Pies (Your Feet)”

Nahko and Medicine For the People will be back our way on July 16th to play the Vancouver Folk Fest Main Stage at 9:55PM. Which sucks for me because I’ll be working, but maybe is something you can (and SHOULD) do.

Go with yourself.

Back to the grind after an incredible weekend up on Brown’s Mountain for the Tall Tree Music Festival. Brown’s Mountain is just outside of Port Renfrew on Vancouver Island. If you take the highway 14 west out of Victoria and drive till it ends, you reach Port Renfrew.

The festival is a wild and crazy time outside of civilization, cell towers, flushing toilets and wifi. Bands and DJs from Noon till about 6AM. Tents, beers, campstove cookouts, kombucha, freaky people, good vibes.

This year’s festival featured headlining sets from Mother Mother, Current Swell, Nahko and Medicine for the People, Shad and ton of great West Coast bands and DJs.

A highlight for me was seeing Vancouver Island favourites Current Swell returning to Tall Tree for the first time since they performed the inaugural one for a few hundred people back in 2010(?).

I’ve been a fan of Current Swell since their earlier days and seeing them Friday night was magical. They performed their 2009 song “Young And Able” and it was a time in their set that I will remember.

Coral and I made the 5-and-half-hours-ish trek from Vancouver because I was fortunate to be given a time to DJ! It was one of the greatest DJ moments I’ve had in my career and only one of a handful of festivals I’ve had the chance to DJ at.

It was a wet one this weekend, especially on the Friday. Here’s a pic of my wife Coral at our “Eagle View” camp.

And look at this… someone proposed up at the Tall Tree Music Festival! I love love.

I already can’t wait for next year…and it was inspiring to see so many great DJs. I need to keep my nose to the turntable and pushing my skills. Now that I have had a taste, I’ll want to DJ another festival!

Browns

Coral and I are off to the Tall Tree Music Festival first ferry Thursday morning. I DJ up on Brown’s Mountain on Thursday June 30 at 5PM on the Tall Tree Stage…between two filthy bands. Dirty Mountain and DiRTY Radio.

seaborns

Maryse and Solomon have another song for us from their project Seaborne.

Talking to Exclaim! “The song is about confronting someone who used to have a lot of control over your life and letting them know they can’t affect you anymore,” Bernard tells Exclaim! “It comes to terms with a toxic relationship and celebrates how that chapter is completely closed.”

Love the dark alterna-pop! EP Lustre is out this summer.

Happy Friday!

Getting ready to DJ tonight at The Starlight Casino. I yo-yo between the Red Bar and Match. They have bands in both lounges and I DJ during their breaks. It’s a fun gig…lots of little, high energy sets. Different rooms, different vibes.

Looking forward to this weekend. Oh boy…feeling creatively bankrupt….but so many things to think about. DJing a bunch over the weekend. Plus my daughter has a swim meet.

Then three radio shows next week. And I really need to find some energy to try and elevate those. Meredith and I are also working on weekend radio show and I want that to be great, but this past week, my energy just wasn’t there for her and the show. I have three ays next week, and I’m gunna make them count.

The Tall Tree! The mountains, the ocean, the friendship, Coral, and the lack of cell phone reception should hopefully refill my brain and help me feel less anxious.

OK, enough of the dear Diary nonsense….some remixes!

I was looking for a “Dark Necessities” remix…and uhhhh I found this.

Jimmy Eat World

In the mid-2000s I became a big fan of the emo punkers Jimmy Eat World. I met the woman who would become my wife and she was all about their 2004 record Futures. We front-to-backed that album a bunch of times and went back and sifted through the earlier stuff, Bleed American, Clarity and Static Prevails.

By 2007, Jimmy Eat World were dropped from their label…so the band went back to their roots and self financed 2007’s Chase This Light. The same thing happened to the band after Clarity, and they self-financed their commercial breakthrough record, Bleed American!

Chase This Light wouldn’t sell the huge amounts of Bleed, but then the times were different, but Chase This Light would be their highest charting record. It is also one of my favourites from the band and era in modern rock.

I don’t know why I’ve been feeling nostalgic for the record lately, but I have been and recent;y put it back on my phone to listen to on the commute.

I think what kept this album from being a monster for the band was a lack of a bonafide modern rock hit. That said, it’s a pretty good listen all the way through with some strong cuts. The lead single is a song called “Big Casino” which did chart respectfully on the radio back in ’07/08.

The song takes it’s title from lead singer Jim Adkins side-project Go Big Casino.

Back in 2007, I asked bass player Rick Burch to tell me what the song is about.

“it’s about the old jaded guy trying to tell the young kids coming up ‘you gotta do it this way.’  But if he knew how to do it, then why didn’t he do it? Why is he the janitor at the place? Well if you knew how to why didn’t you do it? Why are you here? Why aren’t you on top?”

Also…I bought Bleed American from Urban Outfitters for $20 today…so that was a thing that happened.

Off to Victoria this weekend! Having a bit of a Father’s Day holiday. And I have this spiffy new K-Way jackets if the rains come. We are on an Island in the Pacific Northwest after all…any weather is possible.

Before that…one last radio show and a DJ gig at Match for the week. Turn on the radio to 99.3FM on your drive home or come party at the Starlight Casino with me.
