Pup.jpg

Toronto’s Pup have a new record that came out at the end of May…it is on my to-do list of records to get to. They come out so fast an furiously now it’s hard to listen to all the hyped stuff, let alone everything else. I’m still digesting Carseat Headrest and Modern Baseball oh and Band of Horses! Sheesh…then the sea of emails from up-and-coming bands asking for attention.

I like Pup…their 2013 s/t album lived in my purple mini-van for a summer. They remind me of FIDLAR in all the best ways. (especially the song DVP)

They’re back Vancouver for a show at the Cobalt on November 21st, then the next night in Victoria at Lucky Bar.

Vancouver’s White Lung are getting all the hype for their fourth album Paradise (out now on Domino Records). The album has already hit the lists of of “best of 2016 (so far)” for all the major music blogs. They have been nominated for the Polaris Prize and they’ll be around Vancouver this weekend for the Levitation Festival.

They were in New York City recently and stopped by the studio for Sirius XMU. There they did a cover of the Guns N’ Roses song “Used to Love Her.”

Happy Friday!

My wife ordered some furniture from a woodworker in Valemount called Rustic Mountain Tables…and they delivered a bench and coffee table yesterday. We love them so much.

Rolled into the radio factory yesterday and CFOX music director Britters had a stack of Mumford & Sons ep’s and handed me one.

I fired up this new platter last night. It was a pleasant listen.

The story goes: This collection of songs were recorded in Studio 2 and the Auditorium of the The South African Broadcasting Corporation, Johannesburg in February of this year over two all-day-and–all–night sessions and produced by Mumford & Sons and The Very Best’s Swedish electronic music maestro, Johan Hugo.

The record kinda sounds like Vampire Weekend with the vocals of Marcus Mumford.

LA punks FIDLAR worked with the Flaming Lips on their new music video.

the dystopian clip follows a working class protagonist’s ill-fated journey to outer space to join an elite group of super chromosome money making power plants.” Righteous.

FIDLAR travels to BC to perform at Levitation in Vancouver this weekend. And the Island to play Otalith in August.

Go with yourself.

maybe next year

Listening to some slacker fuzzy alt-rock out of rhe UK. The band is called Johnny Kills.

Channels the brighter side of a classic alternative sound. Jangly guitars, pop hooks.

They appear to still be pretty new. That’s fun.

Happy Saturday…a wet one in Vancouver. We just got back from a nice day out at Cultas Lake. Tomorrow we’re back off to Harrison!

Just finished trolling for some new tunes for the setlist at the Starlight Casino tonight. Here are a few remixes that caught my ear.

Ace of Base? OK….

And one more of JT’s new one?

And now I’m outta time.

Go with yourself.

kaleo bw

Iceland’s latest modern rock stars Kaleo have a new listen for us. Their song “No Good” first showed up on the soundtrack for HBO’s VINYL.(Coral and I love that show)

The band recently performed the Sasquatch Festival where my friend Christy said; “Almost done my first work day post-Sasquatch. Listening to this guy on repeat to keep myself awake. If you haven’t checked him out yet, do it! He blew us away this weekend!!”

The band’s album A/B is out on June 10th (hey! THIS FRIDAY!). Likely gunna be essential summertime listening.

And here’s a pic of one of the bros enjoying the majestic Grand Canyon on a bit of a holiday after Sasquatch.

I’ve totally been there too, man.

More info? Here is the press bio from their record label: Best friends since attending elementary school in the small town of Mosfellsbaer outside of Reykjavik, bandleader JJ Juliusson, drummer David Antonsson Crivello, and bassist Danny Jones began playing together at the age of 17 before adding guitarist Rubin Pollock to the mix in 2012. They named the band Kaleo, which means “the sound” in Hawaiian, and started their career in earnest with a handful of well-received shows at the 2012 Iceland Airwaves music festival.   The band made waves in their homeland with their 2013 self-titled debut album, which featured the jaunty folk-rock of “Automobile” to the lo-fi bluesy sketch “Broken Bones”to a modern remake of a traditional Icelandic tune.

titanics

All the way from Albany, New York! Checking out the easy listening tranquil pop record “Close Enough” by Titanics.

This is a fun song from an artist called ODA. Kinda reminds me of Anna of the North and hey…Norwegian. Neat.

You can read a little bit more about her on this blog.

My little guy Jack is sitting on the couch beside me watching toy Youtube Videos…this person is unpacking a playdoh set…she has just shy of 30 million views. One video was over 200 million views.

My whole life has been a waste.

Lukas Graham

My daughter is obsessed with the Danish singer Lukas Forchhammer….who performs as Lukas Graham. If I am driving her somewhere she says, “Dad, put on the playlist.” That means, play “7 Years.”

Last week in Las Vegas, my wife and I heard a remix of “7 Years” and I thought…huh, that song *could* work punched up a bit. Little search on the old soundcloud and I found a few mixes. Here are two that I dug.

I liked that T-Mass trap style take. And here’s a tropical house spin by Mulshine that is ever more popular on soundcloud with over 9 million plays because hey… tropical house!

Oh god…new toys. I don’t *need* another controller…but I sure do want one!

On the weekends at the Starlight Casino, I actually DJ two venues. I set up my Numark NS7ii in Red Bar and an older Numark Mixtrack in Match. The Mixtrack is fine. It was cheap and still works buuuuuuuuut, it isn’t as fun to DJ on it and I mostly just use it blend some tunes. That works as it hasn’t been too busy in match and people aren’t dancing. But what if one day there iS a big party in there to rage? WHAT IF!?! OK, you’re right Blogosphere, I need this new NVii. NEED. If my new contract comes in and I feel solid I’ll be there for a bit, maybe I’ll make the investment.

TOYS!

Zack Lopez

I used to LOVE Middle Class Rut…in fact, a few months ago I was thinking of the Sacramento duo again. Had to put the 2010 (ugh that makes me feel old) modern rock mega hit “New Low” on my iPhone.

Part of the band, Zack Lopez, put out a new solo record last week called Bloodlines. Side one, track one is called “I Don’t know.”

And I don’t think this song made the record…but it was his most recent post on Soundcloud.

Reading, UK psych-poppers Palm Honey sent over their new share song “You Stole My Blackout.”

I don’t know what it is about summer time, but I love fuzzy guitar rock when the days get long.

I love how they pressed a 7-inch release…I hate that I don’t have a record player right now. My son killed my old Numark and a replacement Crosley crapped out out in less that 72 hours. What a sad tale of woe eh?

You can read some more about the band on this blog.

Belgian rockers Faces on TV sent their song “Traveling Bling.”

I think their claim to fame is creating Belgium’s first 360 degree music video? hey that’s something!

Finally…. Otalith Festival on the rugged west coast of Vancouver Island looks like a thing. FIDLAR! My friends in Stinging Belle….man, I wish I could go. I wonder if they named the band after the Biffy Clyro song? Huh.

Go with yourself.
