Back to the grind my music blogger friends. I have been consumed by boxing for the past few weeks, preparing for the Fight 4 The Cause Charity Boxing Classic.  The annual event takes a diverse group of people who have never fought in a sanctioned boxing match, runs them through an intense eight week boxing bootcamp, and has them compete in gala fight.  The event was held last Saturday at the Victoria Conference Centre. Over 1,000 crammed into the building to watch the fight.

I was in the 9th fight against a guy named Brayden Leclaire.

It was an emotional time. It is hard to put into words. In the end, all the training boiled down to 2 minutes. Here is the fight.

Looking back, I can’t believe that is me in there. My stress was pinning in the reds leading up to the fight. I am so thankful to my red team coaches, Hal and Aaron, for preparing me for combat. I am also so thankful to my friend, DJ Boitano, for talking me into signing up and then kicking my ass to train hard.

After the fight, there was this overwhelming rush of emotions. It was crazy.

Alright Music Blogger Nation….

I need to choose my entrance song for Fight 4 The Cause. On November 22nd (BUY tickets today!), I will be fighting in my first ever boxing match. All the fighters need a jam and here is what I’m thinking.  I’ll go with whatever song gets the most votes as I love them all. I believe I get one minute or one minute 30 of the song.

Number 1. Run The Jewels – “Blockbuster Night Part 1” (hit go right off the hop)

Number 2. Explosions in the Sky – “Your Hand in Mine” (not sure where I’ll pick it up)

Number 3. Cursive – “Staying Alive” (probably pick it up at 1:40)

Please help me pick a song in the comment section. Thank you for taking the time and having a part in the journey!

Go with yourself.

fitness

Smack dab in the middle of week 2 of Boxing Bootcamp. November 22nd, this DJ/music blogger will fight a real life person during a gala boxing match! Yesterday I learned about protein, and fuel, and recovery…and then today I was yapping with Dylan Willows and absorbing more. I know for people who regularly enjoy the fitness, it’s all pretty standard. But this whoe protein shake lifestyle is new to me!

I’ve been enjoying waking up at 5:30AM every morning for a hard hour of boxing and fitness. After a great workout…I do feel sore. I know that being new to working out, there is soreness…but I didn’t know about recovery, and what foods I could be eating to help with that recovery. Thank you to Chris at Popeye’s Victoria and DW here at The Zone for them wisdom. Looking forward to my new regime of protein shakes, and…bananas?

Here is a radio promo we made for the Charity Boxing Classic.

I received a message the other day from a rapper out of Lexington, Kentucky! The artist is called Reva. It’s kinda grimy, small town hip hop. I like her style. The vocal hook catchy…the beats distorted.

boxing

Your friendly neighbourhood music blogger/DJ has signed up for a charity boxing event! I am taking part in Fight 4 The Cause. Studio 4 Athletics in Victoria takes 22 men & women who have never fought in a real boxing match and over eight weeks, whips them into fight condition. Then on November 22nd they throw a formal boxing gala at the Victoria Conference Center and we fight in our first sanctioned fight. The event will likely raise $20,000 to $30,000 for a host of local charities including the local Fire Fighters charitable organization and the food bank.

Watch this video. Whoa.

Now, I am a lifer DJ…so this is turning out to be quite the feat as I scrape 34 years of inactive plaque from my muscles, bones and joints. It has been a great time getting up at 6AM and getting punched. Basically most of my life has been listening to records and drinking beer specials at music clubs (and letting the bouncers deal with the fights).

Thank you to The Zone @ 91-3 in Victoria for sponsoring me! (where I work).

Now… I need you!

Before I enter the ring on November 22nd they show a little video (working on something that should be magical. Can’t wait to share with you)…. but I also need an entrance song.

Some ideas thrown around….

Interpol – “Twice As Hard” (RIGHT!?! THIS boxing video is my life right except picture a pear-shaped white nerd instead of these hard bodies)
Pantera – “Walk” (Maybe a little MMA bro for me…but 14-year-old Jeremy still has a heart of Pantera)
Fall out Boy? Oh gawd…

I need YOU! If you have a boxing entrance theme idea, please throw me a comment. I want to know what you think would be rad.

Something energetic, something hilarious, or I also like the idea of vibe or indie sounding dissonance.

Go with yourself.
