[New Rock Now] Northcote sounded amazing opening for The Gaslight Anthem

Last night was stellar. The Gaslight Anthem performed a sold out show at the Commodore Ballroom.

The place was packed, the energy was high and the music was top shelf.

The band that performed before Gaslight was a group based out of Victoria called Northcote. I’ve known Matt for years as he brought the project into focus. A couple years ago he released his debut self-titled record.

Since then, he has criss-crossed the continent, the UK and Europe performing in the growing folk-punk thing happening right now. He has been out there with Dave Hause, Frank Turner, Chuck Ragan, Billy Pettinger, and The Gaslight Anthem.

And from my radio show the other day….

It is becoming a thing in the NHL this week. Goalies and food stuffs.

Vancouver Canucks’s goaltender, Eddie Lack, is known for his love of the mighty taco. And in Vancouver, there are infinity places to get an amazing taco.

The Vancouver Canucks tweeted that Eddie Lack wouldn’t mind if fans threw tacos on the ice after a game. But that doesn’t sound right…. or is it? Let’s call the Canucks to find up what is real.

Biega graphic
One more….ok two more.

I stayed on the SubPop soundcloud while working away, and this Doldrums song is banging hard and good.

And from the radio show yesterday, a song inspired by play of the new Vancouver Canucks d-man Alex Biega. His first game was Monday against the Wild and he scored his first goal! I wish I could sing like John Tillman.

Back to the grind my music blogger friends. I have been consumed by boxing for the past few weeks, preparing for the Fight 4 The Cause Charity Boxing Classic.  The annual event takes a diverse group of people who have never fought in a sanctioned boxing match, runs them through an intense eight week boxing bootcamp, and has them compete in gala fight.  The event was held last Saturday at the Victoria Conference Centre. Over 1,000 crammed into the building to watch the fight.

I was in the 9th fight against a guy named Brayden Leclaire.

It was an emotional time. It is hard to put into words. In the end, all the training boiled down to 2 minutes. Here is the fight.

Looking back, I can’t believe that is me in there. My stress was pinning in the reds leading up to the fight. I am so thankful to my red team coaches, Hal and Aaron, for preparing me for combat. I am also so thankful to my friend, DJ Boitano, for talking me into signing up and then kicking my ass to train hard.

After the fight, there was this overwhelming rush of emotions. It was crazy.

Today is National Grilled Cheese Day!  Wow.  Actually is Grilled Cheese Month… I am so thankful as a society we have our priorities set.

The grilled cheese sandwich is pretty much a basic staple of our North American culture… but did you know?  people have been eating bread and cheese since the olden tymes?

Its true! Like most things delicious (olives, Russel Crowe, sandals), the grilled cheese sandwich originated in ancient Rome.

The Grilled Cheese we enjoy came about in the good ole USA in the 1920 when two great innovations took place.

Cheap American cheese
and Sliced Bread

The grilled cheese is awesome and something I always play with at home.  I don’t normally hit a restaurant for it… but after watching Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, I have started to appreciate what can be done.  I remember one episode form a season or two ago when Guy hit Portland, Oregon and went to the Blueplate Lunch Counter.  They do up a fine grilled cheese and tomato soup!

Today, I went down to The Black Hat Bistro in downtown Victoria to talk to chef Sam Chalmers.  I asked him how to make the BEST grilled cheese sandwich. Please have a listen.

and if you like it, maybe you’ll share the link on your blog or facebook/twiiter thing…or like Pinterest?  sure. and thank you.

Yesterday, I was broadcasting my radio show from Sauce Restaurant.  My man Ryan was jocking the bar… so I hopped back there with him and had him explain how to make an Old Fashioned.

While at Sauce… Victoria Royals defenseman and Carolina Hurricanes’ draft pick, Tyler Stahl stopped by.  So I thought… I got my recorder machine, might as well jam out another episode of Hockey! with Jeremy.

Its been my mantra for awhile now…. the hazier, the better.

Anything that reminds me of 80s alt-rock or 90s indie/lo-fi is going to work in my earbuds right now.

Reading about Hot-lanta guitarist Lockett Pundt’s solo project Lotus Plaza got me excited to check out the single “Strangers.”

Pitchfork “Best New Tracked” the first single from his second record Spooky Action at a Distance.  Lets have a listen shall we.

Jangly, fuzzy, hazy… like the heat rising off the pavement in summer.

Finally got a chance to jam out another episode of Hockey! with Jeremy.  Madelyn asked me how they make the ice in the hockey rink for a Victoria Royals hockey game… I go and find out… and maybe get a forth job?

There is a TV commercial they seem to play all the time when I’m watching highlights on TSN or Sportsnet.  Its for erectile dysfunction… 40 Over 40. I watch it and think… man, we sure do get preoccupied with weird shit.

I was talking about this commercial on twitter with @TimAyres, and he made a comment about the other weird shit we could be preoccupied with. I laughed and thought about it some more then made this with Cassie and Kim at the Zone.

Thank you for taking the time to listen and share.

I had a chance to sit down and talk with former WHL Victoria Cougar Tom Martin. Tom is best remembered as “that guy that got traded for a used bus” in 1983. He ended up being drafted by the Winnipeg Jets and enjoying 7 seasons of professional hockey between the AHL and NHL. He played in NHL games for the Winnipeg Jets, Hartford Whalers and briefly with the Minnesota North Stars.

The latest instalments of Hockey! with me… likely will air during this weekends Victoria Royals WHL hockey broadcasts on the Zone.

Mixcloud: Hockey! with Jeremy >> Roman Horak
Mixcloud: Hockey! with Jeremy >> Suicide Box

#51 for the Calgary Flames is Roman Horak.  Horak played his junior hockey in the “dub” for the Chilliwack Bruins.  Bruins were a WHL expansion team that played only 5 season in Fraser Valley.  This year… they are our team, the Victoria Royals… so that makes Horak an alumni of our team.  Neat.

I talk to Roman about how awesome it is to be in the NHL.

In episode 5, Suicide Box, I hang out at ice level to record the sounds of the game… I capture a great exchange between Timmy T and the Edmonton Oil-Kings.

I love hockey.

In a spectacular turn of fate, I get a chance to take part in a hockey game contest at the Save-On Foods Memorial Arena at a Victoria Royal’s WHL hockey game.

I win a coffee maker. I like hockey.

Stream from Mixcloud: Hockey! with Jeremy >> I win
Download MP3: Hockey with Jeremy 03 – I win

This hockey game did not bode well for the Royals… they lost to the Edmonton Oil Kings, 8-2.  I still had so much fun as it was the first time I got to see an entire game from start to finish.  (I usually bring Mads and bed time is before the game ends or else I am DJing and can’t go to the game).

I also got to go in the suicide box!  That is a box for the media right at ice level that separates the players benches.  I recorded some of the sounds and the chirping between players.  Still messing around with the audio in the studio but will have that done soon.

Thank you for listening.  Go with yourself.
