seaborn

Maryse sent over the new song from her vocal-electronic duo Seaborne. The song is called “Hypnotise.”

Seaborne had been based out of Vancouver but they have taken their act to Montreal.

Maryse broke down the meaning of the song.

“The single recognizes the unique infatuation experienced when seeing an artist you love perform. As an audience member, you feel such an entrancing connection that you’re almost persuaded the performer sees you and feels it too…while also being aware that you’re lost in an equally hypnotized crowd.”

Very cool song.

I was yapping on my show the other day about making another catch and i wanted to share it with you…intrepid music blog reader.

Dad of the Year / Poor parenting play of the day.
Fell asleep on the couch with Elliot last night after DJing…startled awake at the sensation of him falling off me and I Lightening McQueen reached out and caught him. Baby barely woke up.

It was Canadian Thanksgiving last week. If you were celebrating I hope you had a great moment with your friends and family. I enjoyed my weekend my wife Coral and our kids. We took baby Elliot on his first hike! And Jack and Maddy made it all the way to the waterfall.

I’ve been away from the MAS Blog for awhile…. apologies to the handful of folks still reading music blogs in 2017.

What have I been up? Glad you didn’t ask.

Busy busy… baby number 3 was born at the beginning of September. That exciting time for my family also coincided with the fall ratings period in radio, so I’ve been a busy boy.

The music doesn’t stop and I’ve already missed so so much.

Today I want to talk about one of my favourite British bands, Wolf Alice!

The reviews for their new album, Visions of Life, are good! Pitchfork gave it a 7/10, Rolling Stone was a 4/5.

I fired the album on my iPhone for the commute into work this morning and loved it.

The album delivers both moments electrifying grunge and distorted rock, and atmospheric shoegaze. The record was recorded and produced in LA by the same guy that has done music for Paramore and M83. When I listen to songs like “Don’t Delete The Kisses” or “Sky Musings,” I can almost trick myself into thinking I’m hearing a cut off Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming.

Visions of Life out now!
1. Heavenward
2. Yuk Foo
3. Beautifully Unconventional
4. Don’t Delete The Kisses
5. Planet Hunter
6. Sky Musings
7. Formidable Cool
8. Space & Time
9. Sadboy
10. St. Purple & Green
11. After The Zero Hour
12. Visions Of A Life

Wolf Alice have a couple Canadian show in December. No dates out west yet.

Beach Slang principle, James Alex, has a new project for us simply called Quiet Slang.

On October 14th, Quiet Slang will release a 4 song ep called  We Were Babies & We Were Dirtbags (pre order from Polyvinyl). The EP features two Beach Slang songs broken down with cello and piano and two covers. The covers are takes on The Replacements’ “Androgynous” and Big Star’s “Thirteen.”

Alex talks about Quiet Slang, “I suppose we’re all chasing something that resembles salvation, something that calms our bones. Maybe this is some small slice of that. Maybe it’s not. Maybe it’s chaos in soft clothes. Maybe it’s frightened. Maybe it’s fearless. Maybe it’s both. Or maybe it’s nothing. I don’t know, but I think about this: one day I’m going to be dust. And when my soul splits, maybe this will be the thing that sneaks me through the gates. If not, well, those are the breaks.”

“We’re allowed to be alone…..”

WE WERE BABIES & WE WERE DIRTBAGS Tracklisting:
  1. “Future Mixtape For The Art Kids”
  2. “Bad Art & Weirdo Ideas”
  3. “Androgynous” [The Replacements]
  4. “Thirteen” [Big Star]

Beach Slang doesn’t have any Vancouver shows in the short term, but maybe I’ll go see them in Seattle or Portland….maybe.

Slum Sociable

Music blog hype person Anna sent me over a couple to check out. Liked ’em both, so you’re getting them on Thursday afternoon.

Slum Sociable is a pair of bros from Melbourne. Melbourne sounds like a groovy place…there is a coffee shop in Vancouver that is described as a “Melbourne style coffee shop.” Add it’s really good.

This song, “Castle” comes form their upcoming debut record in October. Anna says, “The track is just so effortlessly cool – it sways through an array of genres and sits at the intersections of jazz, electronica and soul. If you love Bonobo or Animal Collective and super rad Aussie acts like Big Scary, you are going to adore this new one.

Anna of The North has a new record called Lovers out on September 8th!

The Soundcloud gremlins took over and played a “recommended track…it is so quirky. I think I love it?

Band is called Deer Scout from Philadelphia.

alvvays again

Toronto indie rockers Alvvays shared a new song today called “Plimsoll Punks.”

The song comes form their upcoming album, Antisocialites, September 8th on Polyvinyl.

A “plimsoll” is a posh way of saying running shoe. Neat.

Alvvays is cool, but they don’t believe in Vancouver. They’re hitting Seattle and Portland in the Pacific Northwest.

10/26 – Portland, OR @ Doug Fir Lounge
10/27 – Portland, OR @ Doug Fir Lounge  [SOLD OUT]
10/28 – Seattle, WA @ The Showbox

All three shows with ALASKALASKA.

Metallica Vancouver

Before their WorldWired tour stop at BC Place in Vancouver, Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett spent 10 minutes to yap with CFOX.

Hammett talks about the setlist creation for their current WorldWired tour. His favourite song to played off Hardwired….To Self Destruct, how they still love playing the classic Metallica songs for the fans, being inspired by jazz legend John Coltrane, taking guitar lessons from Joe Satriani in the early 80s, and his collection of horror movie memorabilia.

Shout out to CFOX producer Jello and Jeff O’Neil Show producer Adam for being part of the team. And thank you to Charlotte and Scott at Warner Music Canada for the hook up.
